Usually, no—not for a console alone. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S top out at 120Hz or 120 frames per second in the official specifications cited here. A 240Hz OLED monitor can still be worthwhile when you want OLED image quality and will also connect a PC capable of using refresh rates above 120Hz. If the display will only serve a console, prioritize the exact resolution at 120Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR, screen size and total price instead of paying for unused 240Hz headroom.
A 240Hz label describes the monitor’s maximum capability. It does not make a PS5 or Xbox game render at 240 frames per second.
What refresh rate can PS5 and Xbox Series X|S actually use?
The practical ceiling for the current consoles in the cited official documentation is 120Hz/120 FPS, and that mode depends on the game, console output settings and display compatibility.
PlayStation 5
Sony says the PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and “4K 120Hz video output.” Its support guidance also describes 120Hz output for games that support a 120Hz frame rate. That means a 240Hz monitor can receive a 120Hz signal, but the console does not turn the second 120Hz of panel capability into additional game frames. Read Sony’s PS5 resolution and 4K 120Hz instructions for the console’s signal-information screen and compatibility checks.

Xbox Series X|S
Microsoft lists an “up to 120 FPS” performance target for Xbox Series X. The company specifies that 4K at up to 120 FPS requires both supported content and a supported display. Xbox Series S has the same 120-FPS class target in Microsoft’s console comparison information, but the resolution delivered by an individual game can differ. Check Microsoft’s Xbox Series X specifications and Xbox Series X|S comparison for the current platform descriptions.
What the ceiling means for a purchase
At 120Hz, a new frame can be presented every 8.33 milliseconds. At 240Hz, the panel’s interval is 4.17 milliseconds, but a console still supplies frames at its supported rate. You may gain no console-side smoothness from the extra 120Hz unless another source, normally a suitable PC, can output above 120Hz.
When 240Hz OLED does make sense
You will share the monitor with a high-refresh PC
A 240Hz OLED monitor has a direct use case when a gaming PC can sustain frame rates above 120 FPS at the monitor’s native resolution. In that setup, the console can use a 120Hz mode while the PC uses 240Hz or an intermediate refresh rate. Whether your PC reaches 240Hz depends on its hardware, game settings, resolution and frame-rate target; the monitor specification alone cannot guarantee it.

OLED is your priority
If you specifically want an OLED panel, many current models happen to combine OLED technology with 240Hz operation. You can buy one for its OLED characteristics and treat 240Hz as future-proofing or PC headroom rather than as a console requirement. The official material cited here does not establish comparative burn-in rates, measured brightness, input-lag results or price-performance, so those should not be assumed from the refresh-rate number.
You want one display for several systems
A single monitor can simplify a desk used by a console, a gaming PC and other HDMI devices. The value comes from replacing multiple displays and preserving a high-refresh PC mode, not from expecting the console to exceed 120Hz.
When a lower-refresh OLED is the better value
If the monitor will stay connected to a PS5 or Xbox, a 120Hz-capable OLED that meets your resolution and feature requirements may be the more rational purchase. The console documentation establishes the 120Hz ceiling, while the cited sources provide no current street-price data. Therefore, the right comparison is not “240Hz versus 120Hz” in isolation; it is the complete cost and capability of two exact models.

Specifications that matter more than the 240Hz number
Resolution at 120Hz
A monitor may advertise a high maximum refresh rate while supporting different resolution-and-refresh combinations on different inputs. Confirm the exact combination you need: for example, 4K at 120Hz for a PS5 or Xbox Series X. Sony’s support page explains how the PS5 identifies the connected display’s capabilities and how to inspect the current video-output signal. If 4K 120Hz is unavailable, Sony recommends checking the HDMI port, cable and monitor firmware as well as the console settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHDMI 2.1 input support
For 4K 120Hz console output, look for an HDMI 2.1 input and verify the manufacturer’s specification for the particular port. A monitor can have multiple HDMI connectors with different capabilities. Do not infer performance from the product family name or from DisplayPort specifications intended for a PC.
Variable refresh rate
VRR lets the display vary its refresh timing to follow changing game frame rates. Sony says PS5 VRR requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR display and warns that results vary by the display and the game. See Sony’s PS5 features documentation for that qualification. Microsoft includes HDMI VRR among Xbox Series features. A 240Hz maximum does not prove that VRR works over the console’s HDMI input, so confirm the supported mode and range in the monitor’s own specification.

Auto Low Latency Mode
ALLM allows a compatible source and display to switch to a low-latency picture mode automatically. Xbox lists ALLM among Series X features. It is useful for console convenience, but it is separate from refresh rate and should be checked as its own specification.
Official 240Hz examples and what they prove
| Monitor example | Published maximum | Console-specific information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 27-inch Gaming Monitor | Up to 240Hz generally | Up to 120Hz when connected to PS5 | The manufacturer’s own example shows that a 240Hz display can operate at the console’s 120Hz ceiling. |
| ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27UCDMG | 27-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED | HDMI 2.1 VRR at 4K 120Hz for PS5 and Xbox Series X | It demonstrates a 4K OLED model with a 240Hz PC-oriented maximum and a specified 4K 120Hz console mode. |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The PlayStation monitor details are on Sony’s product page. ASUS lists the ROG Strix OLED XG27UCDMG specifications on its official product page. Regional model numbers, firmware and available ports can differ, so verify the SKU sold where you live.

- Define the sources. Write down whether the display will connect to a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, a PC, or all three. A console-only setup has no documented need for 240Hz; a PC may have one.
- Set the target console mode. Decide whether you require 4K 120Hz, QHD 120Hz or another supported combination. Do not use the monitor’s maximum refresh rate as a substitute for this check.
- Read the input table. Confirm the exact HDMI port, resolution, refresh rate and HDR/VRR combination. Specifications for DisplayPort or a different HDMI port do not answer the console question.
- Check VRR and ALLM. Match the monitor’s stated HDMI VRR and ALLM support to your console. For PS5, account for Sony’s warning that results vary by display and game.
- Compare total ownership terms. Check the current local price, warranty, return policy and any panel-care requirements for the exact model. The cited official sources do not provide a controlled price comparison or independent durability test.
- Plan the PC connection. If 240Hz is part of the justification, identify the PC output, cable and games that could use a refresh rate above 120Hz at your chosen resolution.
Setup steps for PS5
- Connect the PS5 to the monitor’s HDMI input that the manufacturer specifies for the desired 120Hz mode.
- Use a cable rated for the required HDMI 2.1 mode and update the monitor firmware if the manufacturer provides an update process.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review the resolution, 120 Hz Output and VRR options.
- Use the console’s video-output information screen to confirm the active signal. Sony’s resolution guide explains where to inspect these capabilities.
- If 4K 120Hz does not appear, test the other HDMI input, reseat or replace the cable, check the monitor firmware and review the display’s input mode. The monitor must advertise the mode correctly to the console.
Setup steps for Xbox Series X|S
- Connect the console to the monitor’s specified HDMI 2.1 port.
- Open Settings > General > TV & display options and select the intended resolution and refresh rate.
- Open 4K TV details to see which 4K, 120Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM capabilities the console detects.
- Enable VRR or ALLM only after confirming that the monitor supports those functions over the connected HDMI input.
- If a capability is missing, check the monitor’s input mode, cable, firmware and the exact regional model specification before changing game settings.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Assuming every game runs at 120 FPS
The platform target is a ceiling, not a guarantee for every title. A game must support a 120Hz or 120-FPS mode, and some games use different performance and resolution modes. Check the game’s own graphics options and keep the console’s output within the display’s supported range.

Buying on “240Hz” without checking 4K 120Hz
Some high-refresh monitors emphasize PC connectivity. Before purchase, find the exact HDMI table and confirm 4K 120Hz if that is your console goal. A 240Hz rating that applies only through DisplayPort or at a lower resolution does not satisfy a 4K console requirement.
Expecting VRR to behave identically everywhere
VRR behavior depends on the console, display firmware, HDMI implementation and game. Sony explicitly says PS5 results vary by display and game. Treat VRR as a compatibility feature to verify, not an automatic benefit of OLED or 240Hz.
Ignoring regional and firmware changes
Monitor specifications and firmware can change, and regional SKUs may use different ports or features. Match the model number on the retailer listing, the manufacturer’s page and the warranty documentation before ordering.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Best interpretation of 240Hz OLED | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 only | Usually unnecessary headroom | 4K or QHD at 120Hz, HDMI 2.1, compatible VRR, size and price |
| Xbox Series X|S only | Usually unnecessary headroom | Supported resolution at 120Hz, HDMI VRR, ALLM, size and price |
| Console plus high-refresh PC | Potentially worthwhile | Console HDMI modes plus the PC’s 240Hz resolution, input and cable requirements |
| Replacing several displays | Potentially worthwhile for flexibility | Inputs, switching convenience, console compatibility and PC performance |
Bottom line: is it worth it?
Buy a 240Hz OLED gaming monitor for console gaming when OLED is important to you and the same display will also serve a PC or another source that can use more than 120Hz. For a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S by itself, 240Hz is unused headroom: the official console specifications and support pages cited above describe up to 120Hz/120 FPS, subject to supported games and displays. A less expensive monitor that delivers your required resolution at 120Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR and any desired ALLM support is likely the stronger console value. Verify the exact model, port, firmware and regional specification before purchase.
