The $178 resonator guitar kit price is unverified. A search result containing “178” referred to a different product: a WoodStax Granadillo dreadnought kit listed by StewMac at $799.99 and out of stock. A documented resonator-style DIY kit from Vibeworks was listed at $260, but the page showed conflicting availability signals. Check the seller’s current listing before relying on either price or stock.
What the $178 claim does—and does not—tell you
There is no verified match in the available listings for a six-string resonator guitar kit priced at $178. The “178” in the StewMac result was part of a different guitar-kit product title, not evidence of a resonator kit at that price. The Vibeworks listing is a closer match to a conventional resonator-style build, but its displayed price was $260 and its availability indicators conflicted.
Those distinctions matter: a standard six-string resonator-style guitar, a small cigar-box instrument, and a square-neck lap guitar are different projects and playing formats, not interchangeable bargains.

Which kind of resonator build fits your playing?
For a conventional six-string, round-neck guitar
The Vibeworks Resonator Style Build Your Own Guitar Kit is the clearest documented DIY option resembling a conventional six-string guitar. The maker lists a routed mahogany-veneer body, mahogany set neck, fretted rosewood fingerboard, installed dual-action truss rod, trapeze bridge, and mini-humbucker and piezo components. Its listed specifications are a 24½-inch scale, 1⅝-inch nut width, and 19 frets; the maker rates build difficulty 5/5. The page listed the kit at $260 when accessed in 2026, but conflicting in-stock and sold-out indicators mean availability should be verified directly. See the Vibeworks kit listing.

This format is the more natural fit if you want a familiar six-string, fretted, round-neck instrument. However, the listing says the body arrives predrilled and routed and the neck fretted—not that the guitar arrives finished or ready to play. Final sanding and finishing remain, and the builder must do custom work to fit the mini-humbucker. The included piezo can be used under the bridge; the controls can be installed or omitted.
For a smaller cigar-box project
CB Gitty’s Hubcap Howler is a three- or four-string cigar-box-style resonator kit, not a standard six-string guitar. It has a 23-inch scale, fretted neck, and strings intended for open-G variants. The maker describes basic clamping, light drilling, and screw insertion, estimating 3–4 hours of assembly excluding glue drying. Tools and glue are not included. This is a distinct project and playing experience, so its format should not be treated as a substitute for a conventional guitar without considering the string count and tuning. For lap-style bluegrass playing
A square-neck resonator is played in a different position from a conventional round-neck guitar: it is held flat and played on the lap, typically with a tone bar. StewMac’s Bluegrass Resomaster manual identifies that project as a square-neck resonator build. The manual provides detailed assembly guidance but does not establish current availability or price for a kit. Read the Bluegrass Resomaster instructions.
For contrast, Gold Tone describes its PBR as a roundneck resonator tuned EADGBE, with a mahogany body and Beard cone/spider. Its displayed price was $1,499.99 when accessed in 2026; it is a ready-made instrument, not a kit, so it is useful only as price context. See Gold Tone’s PBR listing.

How cone design affects the comparison
Resonator guitars use a metal cone to project and shape the instrument’s sound. The main designs discussed in Guitar Center’s guide are tricone, biscuit, and spider. Its descriptions associate biscuit designs with a punchier attack and spider designs with a rounder tone and longer sustain. These are retailer descriptions of tonal tendencies, not results from controlled comparative testing or guarantees for every instrument. When comparing kits, check the actual cone and bridge parts included rather than relying on the word “resonator” alone. StewMac’s older Delta Resomaster manual, for example, lists a metal body, cone, coverplate, tailpiece, and biscuit bridge among the parts; it describes an older project and does not establish that the kit is currently sold. What building the guitar involves
Plan for finishing and setup, not just assembly
Even a kit with a routed body and fretted neck can require sanding, finishing, component installation, and setup. The Vibeworks listing’s 5/5 difficulty rating is the maker’s assessment, not an independent rating. Its instructions call for final sanding and a finish, and fitting the mini-humbucker requires custom work. Confirm the kit’s current contents and instructions before buying additional supplies.

StewMac’s Bluegrass Resomaster manual illustrates the demands of a more involved build. For that kit, it recommends a dry run of fitting, gluing, clamping, and finishing; one week of wood acclimation in the shop environment; and ideal conditions of 70–80°F and 45–50% relative humidity. It lists hand tools, many clamps, a small router and drill, and specialty nut-slotting files. These are recommendations for that particular manual, not universal requirements for every resonator kit.

Use the instructions for the exact kit
Build steps and parts vary. The Delta Resomaster manual discusses woodworking tools and clamps and advises eye protection, gloves when needed, and proper ventilation when using tools, glues, or chemicals. Treat those as safety reminders for that project and consult the instructions supplied with the kit you choose; do not assume a simpler cigar-box build calls for the same equipment or process.
