Not necessarily. 5G home internet can be faster than a home’s existing connection in some situations, but 5G and Wi-Fi are different parts of a network, so there is no universal speed winner. 5G may bring internet service to your home; Wi-Fi usually carries that connection from the router to devices indoors. Which feels faster depends on the service available at your address, the cellular signal, and the quality of your home Wi-Fi.

What does “5G versus Wi-Fi” mean at home?

5G is a cellular network technology. In a fixed wireless 5G home internet setup, a gateway receives a connection over the cellular network and typically distributes it around the home using Wi-Fi. Your phone or laptop may therefore be using Wi-Fi even when the household’s internet service comes from 5G.

That makes the useful comparison less “5G or Wi-Fi?” and more: does a 5G home internet service perform better at this address than the household’s current internet service, and can the home network deliver that connection reliably to the devices and rooms that matter?

What do the available speed figures show?

In its 2024 Communications Marketplace Report, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported mean 5G download speeds from 173.3 to 276.1 Mbps and median 5G download speeds from 113.6 to 230.4 Mbps for the three nationwide providers in the United States during the second half of 2023. The same report cited a separate fixed broadband measurement report: twelve participating ISPs had a weighted mean advertised download speed of 467 Mbps for September–October 2022. TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

These figures give context, not a controlled head-to-head verdict. They cover different periods and measures: the 5G numbers are reported speeds, while the fixed broadband figure is an average of advertised speeds. The latter is neither a same-period measurement nor a guarantee of what every subscriber experienced. They cannot establish which option will be faster in a particular home.

Availability and performance at your address

Service availability and performance can vary by location. The FCC National Broadband Map lets you select an address to see reported fixed providers, technologies, and maximum advertised speeds. Those maximums are not a promise of the speed a device will experience. Use the map to identify options, then check each provider’s current offer and terms for your address. Indoor 5G signal

A mobile coverage map is not an indoor-performance guarantee. The FCC says its mobile coverage areas represent where consumers should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle; they do not show indoor coverage. A map can help indicate general availability, but it cannot tell you precisely how a 5G gateway will perform inside your home.

Wi-Fi coverage and equipment

Even a fast incoming connection can feel slow if the router or gateway is in poor condition, the signal does not reach a room well, or the connected device is a bottleneck. The FCC notes that speed-test results may reflect the modem or Wi-Fi router, devices, in-home signal propagation, and bottlenecks elsewhere on the network—not only the provider connection. Use and service terms

Download speed is only one part of the decision. Compare upload speed and measured performance at different times, and consider latency if you rely on gaming or calls. Check current data or usage terms and the monthly price after any promotion. These details depend on the offer available at your address; the cited FCC figures do not settle them.

How to check whether your Wi-Fi is the bottleneck

  1. Run a baseline test. Use the same device and speed-test method for each measurement, and note the time and location.
  2. Test near the gateway. A result close to the router or gateway helps show what the device can receive under better in-home signal conditions.
  3. Test in the rooms you use. Repeat the test in the places where calls, gaming, or streaming commonly happen. A substantially weaker result away from the gateway points to an in-home coverage issue, though a test alone cannot identify every cause.
  4. Compare with a wired test if practical. A wired measurement can help separate the incoming service from Wi-Fi performance. Use the same device and test method where possible.
  5. Interpret results in context. If measurements are slow both near the gateway and on a wired connection, the provider connection or another bottleneck may be involved. If performance drops mainly in distant rooms, investigate Wi-Fi coverage and equipment before concluding that the internet service itself is slow.

A newer router, including a Wi-Fi 6 model, may be relevant when the problem is in-home Wi-Fi coverage or capacity. It does not increase the speed supplied by an ISP or improve cellular 5G coverage. Whether a router is suitable depends on the existing gateway, the home, device support, and the service setup.

How should you choose between 5G home internet and another connection?

Start with the options and actual performance at your address, rather than assuming one technology is always faster. Compare these factors before switching:

  • Address-specific availability and the advertised download and upload speeds.
  • Measured performance at different times, including the rooms where you use the service.
  • Indoor 5G reception and whether the gateway can be placed where it performs well.
  • Latency for time-sensitive uses such as gaming and video calls.
  • Current data or usage terms and the monthly cost after promotional pricing ends.
  • Whether your Wi-Fi reaches the devices and rooms that matter.

Check provider availability, prices, and terms directly because they can change. The FCC’s maps are useful starting points for identifying reported options, not substitutes for address-specific provider details or measurements in your home.
