Yes. A 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) internet plan is very fast for most home use, with plenty of shared download capacity for multiple online activities. But “1 Gbps” is usually the plan’s advertised maximum download rate—not a guarantee that every device, Wi-Fi connection, or speed test will show 1,000 Mbps. Upload speed and the equipment and network conditions in your home matter too.
What does 1 Gbps internet mean?
Gbps means gigabits per second; Mbps means megabits per second. One gigabit per second equals 1,000 megabits per second. It describes a rate of data transfer, not a fixed amount of data you receive each month.
Internet providers commonly advertise a plan’s download speed, which affects how quickly your devices receive data. Upload speed—the rate at which they send data—may be different. Check both figures in the plan details rather than assuming “1 Gbps” applies in both directions.
What can you do with a 1 Gbps connection?
Stream video
For a sense of scale, Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 15 Mbps for UHD 4K, 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD, and 3 Mbps for 720p HD. Those are Netflix recommendations for its service, not universal requirements for every streaming app. A gigabit connection has substantial download capacity relative to those individual recommendations, including when several household activities overlap. #1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Work, learn, and make calls
Video calls, remote work, online classes, and cloud backups all use the connection, but their needs differ. Upload speed is particularly relevant when you send video, share large files, or back up data. In a 2024 order, the FCC cited Zoom guidance of 1.2 Mbps upload for a single 720p one-to-one call, with higher amounts for group calls and higher-quality video. The FCC also cited CoSN’s 2021 recommendation of 12 Mbps upload per student. These are examples tied to particular use cases, not a universal household upload requirement. FCC 24-27
Support several people and devices at once
The main practical benefit of a high-speed tier is the capacity available when people stream, call, download, and browse at the same time. There is no reliable fixed number of people or streams that every gigabit plan will support: video quality, buffering, device behavior, simultaneous downloads, and network conditions vary.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
The FCC cautions that simply adding the nominal bandwidth needs of individual activities can give a misleading picture of a household’s needs. Its 2023 notice reported an average of 20.2 connected devices per household in the first half of 2022; that is historical context, not a current 2026 estimate. FCC 23-89
Why might a speed test show less than 1,000 Mbps?
A plan’s advertised rate and the result measured on one device are not necessarily the same. The speed test measures delivery under particular conditions, including the path between the device and test server. Provider delivery, protocol overhead, the router, the device’s network interface, and Wi-Fi conditions can all affect the result. The FCC has discussed how customer equipment and protocol overhead can constrain measured gigabit throughput; its older technical material explains the principle, rather than describing every current device. FCC DA 18-710 and FCC DA 11-1096

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
A result below exactly 1,000 Mbps does not by itself prove a fault. First confirm what the plan promises and how you tested. Wi-Fi results can be affected by signal strength, distance, interference, and the capabilities of the router and device.
How to check a lower-than-expected result
- Confirm the plan’s rates. Check whether 1 Gbps refers to download only and find the stated upload speed.
- Try a wired test. If possible, connect the test device to the router by Ethernet to reduce Wi-Fi’s influence. The router and device must both have gigabit-capable Ethernet ports. A suitable Ethernet cable can help make a wired connection, but it cannot overcome a slower port, a plan limitation, or provider-side congestion.
- Check the test conditions. Note whether other devices are actively downloading or streaming, and remember that the test server and route can affect the reading. A speed test is a measurement of that connection at that time, not a guarantee of identical performance everywhere in the home.
- Compare like with like. Test using the provider’s specified method, if one is given, and compare the result with the plan’s stated performance terms rather than treating 1,000 Mbps as a mandatory reading on every device.
The FCC’s technical discussion of gigabit measurements explains why equipment and overhead matter: DA 18-710 and DA 11-1096.

Is a gigabit plan worth it?
It depends on what is available at your address, the plan’s full terms, and how your household uses the connection. A lower tier may be adequate for a household with modest or mostly non-overlapping use; gigabit can offer more headroom when many people or bandwidth-heavy tasks coincide. Compare the actual monthly price, upload and download rates, any data limits, and the provider’s performance terms. Without your location and current local offers, there is no sound way to name a best-value plan.
