There is no single “1099 deadline.” The date depends on the tax year, form, filing method, and whether you mean the IRS copy or the recipient’s statement. For the 2025 tax year processed in 2026, Form 1099-NEC was due February 2, 2026, while most covered information returns filed electronically were due March 31, 2026. E-filing is generally mandatory when you must file 10 or more information returns in aggregate. The free IRS Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) accepts eligible 1099 forms through manual entry or CSV upload, and it supports corrections through channel-specific procedures.
Which 1099 deadline applies?
Start by identifying three things: the tax year reported on the form, the processing year in which you submit it, and whether you are filing on paper or electronically. A recipient-copy deadline can be different from the IRS filing deadline. Form-specific instructions control when a general rule and a form instruction appear to differ.
2025 tax-year example filed in 2026
The IRS General Instructions for Certain Information Returns for the 2025 tax year list these dates for the 2026 processing season:
| Return or method | IRS deadline in this dated example | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1099-NEC | February 2, 2026 | The tax-year 2025 date; the normal January 31 date moved to the next business day because January 31 fell on a weekend. |
| Most electronically filed Forms 1097, 1098, 1099, 3921, 3922, and W-2G | March 31, 2026 | Exceptions apply, including certain Form 5498-family returns and other form-specific schedules. |
| Most paper-filed information returns | Different from the electronic date | Use the instructions for the exact form; paper and electronic deadlines are not interchangeable. |
As a general instruction, Form 1099-NEC is due January 31 whether filed on paper or electronically. General instructions for Form 1099-MISC use February 28 for paper filing and March 31 for electronic filing. If a due date falls on Saturday, Sunday, or a qualifying legal holiday, it moves to the next business day. Those are framework rules, not a substitute for checking the instructions for your filing year.
#1 Best Overall
Do not use the February 2, 2026 or March 31, 2026 dates for a different tax year without checking the applicable IRS publication. The IRS changes its annual instructions, and recipient-statement dates can differ from the dates in this table.
When is e-filing required?
Under the current IRS rule, a filer generally must submit information returns electronically when the filer is required to file 10 or more returns in a calendar year. The count is aggregated across almost all return types covered by the regulation rather than calculated separately for each form. Forms W-2 filed with the Social Security Administration count toward that total.
The current threshold replaced the former 250-returns-per-return-type threshold. Thus, a business with eight Forms 1099-NEC and two Forms 1099-MISC generally reaches the 10-return threshold even though neither form category alone has 10 returns.

Returns with special statutory or regulatory rules can be treated differently. If your filing involves an unusual form, a consolidated statement, or a return outside the standard information-return list, confirm its requirement in the current IRS instructions. When you are below 10 covered returns, the IRS generally allows paper or electronic filing, but electronic submission may still be the more practical choice.

What IRIS does and what you need before using it
IRIS is the IRS’s free, web-based intake system for eligible information returns. The IRS Tax Tip dated January 14, 2025, states: “Business taxpayers can file electronically any Form 1099 series information returns for free with the IRS Information Returns Intake System.” Availability is tied to the form, tax year, and processing year, so check the IRS supported-form list before preparing a file. The listed Form 1099 coverage extends to tax year 2022 and later, but every form is not necessarily available for every year or channel.
You need an IRIS Taxpayer Identification Number (TCC) to access the portal. The portal supports manual entry and a CSV-template upload. It can also submit extensions and corrections and can flag missing information or input errors before submission. The IRS says a filer may receive confirmation that a return was received in as little as 48 hours; that is a receipt estimate, not a promise that the return has been accepted or fully processed.
IRIS portal, A2A, and paper compared
| Route | Best fit | Cost and preparation | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| IRIS Taxpayer Portal | Small or moderate batches that can be entered manually or prepared in the IRS CSV format | The IRS portal is free; obtain an IRIS TCC and validate each record | The August 24, 2026 transition notice describes a limit of up to 100 returns at a time; verify the operational limit before filing |
| IRIS A2A | Organizations using accounting or tax software and repeat, higher-volume workflows | Requires software or a service that implements the IRS specifications; any software charge is separate from the IRS | Use the A2A specifications and the A2A correction guidance rather than portal instructions |
| Paper | Filers below the applicable electronic threshold whose form permits paper filing | Requires the correct scannable forms, mailing, and manual recordkeeping | Paper deadlines and procedures differ from electronic filing, and some forms or filers cannot use paper |
You do not need to buy third-party software merely because you have several forms. The aggregate threshold determines when e-filing is required, and IRIS remains a free option for eligible filings. Software becomes useful when you need accounting-system integration, automated validation, or a workflow larger than the portal’s practical limits.

How to file a 1099 through IRIS
- Identify every required return. Determine which 1099 form applies to each payment, the tax year, the recipient’s legal name, taxpayer identification number, address, and reportable amounts. Separate federal reporting from any state filing or withholding obligation.
- Count your aggregate returns. Add all covered information returns you must file for the calendar year, including W-2s filed with the SSA, to determine whether electronic filing is mandatory.
- Obtain and activate an IRIS TCC. Portal access depends on this identifier. Keep the account credentials and authorization information available to the person who will submit the returns.
- Confirm form availability. Check the IRS list for the specific tax year and processing year. Do not assume that a form accepted in one year or through A2A is available in the portal for another year.
- Choose manual entry or CSV upload. Manual entry suits a small number of records. For a batch, download the current IRS template and map your accounting columns to its exact headers, formats, and required fields. Do not alter field names or use a template from a prior year without checking it.
- Run the portal validations. Correct missing taxpayer identification numbers, invalid amounts, address problems, and other alerts before submission. A successful upload or validation screen is not the same as an IRS acceptance notice.
- Submit and save the confirmation. Retain the submission identifier, receipt, transmission date, and a copy of the data exactly as filed. The 48-hour figure cited by the IRS is an estimate for receipt confirmation.
- Deliver recipient statements separately. IRIS filing sends the IRS copy; it does not eliminate your obligation to furnish the recipient’s copy by the applicable deadline and permitted delivery method.
- Reconcile your records. Match the filed totals to your general ledger, payroll or accounts-payable records, and any state reporting. Keep the filing record and supporting documentation under your normal tax-record retention policy.
Recipient copies are a separate deadline
A 1099 has at least two audiences: the IRS and the payee. The date for furnishing the recipient statement can be earlier than, later than, or the same as the IRS deadline, depending on the form. Electronic delivery to a recipient generally requires the recipient’s consent and a compliant notice process. Use the current instructions for the exact form rather than assuming that an IRIS submission also satisfies delivery.

Can IRIS 1099 filings be corrected?
Yes. The IRS confirms that returns originally filed through IRIS can be corrected. The procedure depends on how the original return was submitted and on the correction type.
Portal corrections
Portal filers should use the current IRS Publication 5717 guidance. It explains the portal workflow and the information needed for an electronic correction. Because correction screens and validation rules can change, follow the version applicable to the filing year and do not substitute an A2A procedure.
A2A corrections
Filers using software or a service through the A2A channel should use Publication 5718 and the current A2A specifications. The data structure and transmission rules are distinct from the portal process.

For a paper-originated return, use the correction procedures in the current General Instructions for Certain Information Returns and the form instructions. Keep the original and corrected records together so the reason for the change is auditable.
The IRS material establishes that corrections are available, but it does not create one universal correction deadline or guarantee that every correction type is available through every channel. Identify whether the error is in the recipient’s identifying information, a dollar amount, a missing return, or an original-versus-corrected indicator, then follow the guide for that channel. Correct the recipient statement as well when the error affects what the payee received.
What happens to FIRE?
The IRS announced on August 24, 2026, that FIRE submissions will end in November 2026. For tax-year 2026 information returns filed during the 2027 season, IRIS will be the only intake system for forms that had been submitted through FIRE. Current FIRE users should establish an IRIS workflow before the final FIRE cutoff instead of waiting for filing season.
| Date and time | FIRE transition event |
|---|---|
| November 1, 2026 | Final date listed for FIRE test submissions |
| November 9, 2026 | Last date listed for changes to existing FIRE TCC applications |
| November 19, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time | Final FIRE filing cutoff in the IRS notice |
The same notice describes the IRIS portal as supporting up to 100 returns at a time through manual entry or CSV and identifies A2A as the software route for larger volumes. These are operational details that can change, so check the IRS transition page and QuickAlerts close to your filing date.

Using the wrong year’s form or deadline
Verify the tax year printed on the return and the processing year of the filing. Replace old CSV templates and deadline calendars when the IRS publishes new instructions.
Best Value
Counting forms by type instead of in aggregate
Include all covered information returns, not just one 1099 category, when applying the 10-return rule. Include W-2s filed with the SSA.
Assuming an upload is an acceptance
Save the submission receipt, then monitor the portal for status or error messages. Resolve rejected records rather than treating the original batch as complete.
Sending a correction through the wrong channel
Use Publication 5717 for portal filings, Publication 5718 for A2A filings, and the general instructions for paper corrections. A procedure that worked in FIRE should not be carried forward without checking the post-transition rules.
Missing the payee copy
Schedule recipient statements as a separate task. An IRS transmission does not prove that the payee received a compliant statement.
Practical compliance checklist
- Confirm the form, tax year, processing year, and filing method.
- Count all covered returns in aggregate and determine whether e-filing is mandatory.
- Verify that the form is supported in IRIS for that year.
- Maintain an active IRIS TCC or the credentials required by your A2A process.
- Use the current CSV template or A2A specification.
- Validate taxpayer identification numbers, addresses, amounts, and state fields before submission.
- Save receipts, error reports, corrected files, and recipient-delivery records.
- Check annual IRS instructions and QuickAlerts for changed dates, form availability, and FIRE-transition updates.
The safest way to think about IRIS is as a filing channel, not a deadline calculator. Determine the form-specific obligations first, then use the channel that matches your volume and systems. For most small businesses, the free portal and a carefully validated CSV provide a complete federal filing path; larger or integrated operations may prefer A2A, while every filer remains responsible for the correct dates, recipient statements, and any needed corrections.
