Choose the Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo if you want a bagless robot that compresses debris inside the machine and does not need a separate emptying dock. Choose the Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty Dock if you prefer debris transferred to a dock and iRobot’s advertised storage of up to 75 days. Both offer vacuuming, mopping, ClearView LiDAR mapping, and automatic carpet detection. Neither can be called the objectively better cleaner from the available manufacturer evidence alone.
The short answer: decide how you want debris stored
These two robots perform the same basic jobs but solve the debris-storage problem differently. The Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty sends collected dirt from the robot into a separate dock. iRobot says that arrangement provides up to 75 days of hands-free cleaning before the dock bag needs replacement. The Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo mechanically compacts debris inside the robot, is bagless, and is specified by iRobot to hold debris for up to 60 days.
That makes the choice primarily a home-layout and maintenance decision rather than a proven cleaning-performance ranking. Pick the 105 when a dock is acceptable and you value the longer advertised emptying interval. Pick the 205 when floor space is tight, you do not want dock bags, or you prefer emptying one onboard bin yourself.

Make sure you are comparing the right Roomba 105
“Roomba 105” is a family name, not one fixed bundle. iRobot’s catalog includes a Vac-only version and Combo versions with different dock arrangements. This comparison uses the Roomba 105 Combo Robot + AutoEmpty Dock, not the 105 Vac-only model or the 105 Combo sold without a dock. The competing product is the Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo Robot.

Before ordering, open the exact product listing and confirm the model name, whether an AutoEmpty dock is included, the mop accessories in the box, shipping region, and current price. iRobot’s catalog can display different promotions for different 105 configurations, so a page that simply says “105” does not establish the bundle you are buying. The manufacturer’s comparison starting point is its Combo catalog.

How the two debris systems change daily ownership
Roomba 105: a dock-and-bag workflow
After a cleaning run, the 105 returns to its AutoEmpty dock, where debris is moved out of the robot and into a replaceable bag. The appeal is reduced interaction with the robot itself: you can leave it running on a schedule and deal with the dock bag only when it fills. iRobot advertises up to 75 days of hands-free cleaning for this setup. The same product page says the dock bag traps 99% of allergens as small as 0.7 microns; that is an iRobot claim, not an independently verified filtration result.
Recommended Free Tools
The trade-offs are physical and consumable. The dock needs a permanent location with clearance for the robot to approach and leave, plus access to a power outlet. You also need compatible replacement bags. A dock can be convenient in a large home, but it occupies more visible floor area than the 205 alone and adds another component that must remain accessible.

- UP TO 75 DAYS HANDS-FREE CLEANING. Dirt and dust stay gone because it empties into the AutoEmpty dock with a bag that traps 99% of allergens as small as 0.7 microns- That means no mess or cloud of dust when you empty it- Just drop the used bag into the trash and put a new one in the base.

Roomba 205: compacted debris in the robot
The 205 uses a mechanical DustCompactor to compress collected material inside its own bin. iRobot describes the design as bagless and says the robot can store debris for up to 60 days. There is no separate self-emptying station and therefore no dock bag to buy, fit, or dispose of. This is useful where a charging base must sit in a narrow hallway, under furniture, or in a small apartment.
Bagless does not mean maintenance-free. You still need to remove and empty the compacted debris when the bin reaches capacity, and you must keep the robot’s air path, filter, brushes, sensors, and mop components clean. The 60-day figure is an upper-limit manufacturer claim; actual emptying frequency will vary with floor area, shedding, dust load, and cleaning schedule.
Cleaning functions are broadly similar
Both compared Combo models are specified to vacuum, mop, or vacuum and mop in one run. That lets you choose a vacuum-only routine for carpets, a mop-only pass for hard floors, or a combined pass when you want both tasks. The shared feature set means the debris system—not the existence of a mop—is the clearest differentiator.

Carpet detection and rug handling
Each product page describes automatic carpet detection intended to keep rugs from being mopped. Treat that as a design objective rather than a guarantee for every rug construction or room arrangement. Loose edges, dark patterns, thresholds, and unusual surfaces can affect any robot’s sensing. Remove cords and small objects, secure delicate rug fringes, and check the first few runs before leaving the robot unattended around valuable textiles.

Mop pads and liquid
The 105 includes a microfiber mop pad. Its app controls include mopping-liquid settings, according to iRobot’s product description. The 205 uses a washable microfiber pad, and its listing identifies an extra mop pad. Follow the model’s current manual for approved liquids, pad washing, drying, and replacement. Do not infer that a washable pad eliminates routine cleaning: a damp pad left attached can develop odor, and a dirty pad can spread soil instead of removing it.
205 SmartScrub claim
iRobot says the 205’s SmartScrub delivers “2x deeper scrubbing” than its standard vacuum-and-mop mode for coffee. This is a comparison made by the manufacturer under conditions that are not specified in the available product information. It should not be treated as an independently measured stain-removal result or as proof that the 205 cleans better overall.
Navigation, mapping, and app controls
Both robots are described as using ClearView LiDAR. That gives each model a mapped-navigation feature set rather than relying solely on random movement. The product pages do not establish independent accuracy, obstacle-avoidance success, cleaning coverage, or long-term mapping reliability in real homes, so those outcomes should remain expectations to verify after setup rather than purchasing certainties.
iRobot describes app controls for the 105 that include targeting rooms, scheduling, selecting cleaning passes, adjusting suction, and controlling mopping liquid. The 205 page also describes app-based control. Exact menu names and capabilities can change with app releases; install the current app, update the robot’s firmware, and confirm which controls appear for your specific region and configuration.

- CLEAN FLOORS EVERY DAY—WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT. The Roomba Plus 415X vacuums and mops in one run, stopping crumbs, dust, and spills before they turn into stuck‑on messes. With 20,000 Pa and DualClean mop pads, your floors stay visibly clean from morning and night.
- NO MORE SCRUBBING DRIED‑ON MESSES. SmartScrub applies extra pressure exactly where messes are stubborn—breaking down dried food, muddy paw prints, and kitchen splatter, so you never have to scrub by hand again.
- REACHES THE PLACES DIRT USUALLY HIDES. A 46% slimmer design* fits under more furniture, while extending brushes pull debris from edges and corners—so dust doesn’t collect where traditional robots miss. *Compared to Roomba 105
- GREAT FOR HOMES WITH PETS. Tangle‑free rubber brushes capture pet fur without clogging, eliminating constant stops to cut hair off the brush.
- EVERY CLEAN STARTS WITH A FRESH MOP—NOT YESTERDAY’S DIRT. The AutoWash Dock washes and heat‑dries mop pads at 113°F after every run, preventing odors and buildup so floors aren’t cleaned with yesterday’s dirt.
Which model fits your home?
Choose the Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty when:
- You want debris moved out of the robot automatically after runs.
- You can dedicate floor space to a powered dock.
- You prefer iRobot’s advertised up-to-75-day hands-free interval over a shorter onboard-storage claim.
- You are comfortable buying and replacing dock bags.
- Several people use the home and minimizing contact with the robot’s dirt bin matters.
Choose the Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo when:
- You do not want a separate self-emptying station in the room.
- You prefer a bagless system and accept manually emptying the robot’s compacted bin.
- Your charging area has limited width, depth, or outlet access.
- You want the 205’s washable mop-pad setup and its manufacturer-described SmartScrub mode.
- You would rather avoid recurring dock-bag purchases than maximize the advertised storage interval.
When neither is an obvious winner
If your priority is proven cleaning performance, noise, obstacle handling, battery endurance, reliability, or long-term repairability, the available manufacturer pages do not provide a fair head-to-head answer. Both models may be sensible feature matches, but those questions require independent testing or your own return-policy-protected trial. Do not use the 75-day and 60-day figures as a proxy for suction strength or cleaning quality.
Space, placement, and maintenance checklist
Before buying the 105
- Measure the intended dock location and leave enough approach space for the robot to align reliably.
- Confirm a nearby outlet and route the cable where the robot cannot snag it.
- Check the listing for the included dock bag and verify replacement-bag availability for your region.
- Decide whether the dock’s visible footprint is acceptable in the room where the robot will live.
Before buying the 205
- Confirm that you have a convenient place to empty the onboard compactor without spreading dust.
- Plan a routine for washing and fully drying the microfiber mop pad.
- Set a reminder to inspect the filter, brushes, wheels, sensors, and compactor as the robot accumulates hours.
- Keep the charging area clear even though there is no self-emptying dock.
For either model
- Pick up cables, socks, toys, and pet items before scheduled runs.
- Use the app to create a schedule that matches traffic and drying time on hard floors.
- Run an initial supervised mapping cycle and check room labels and carpet behavior.
- Keep the robot and any dock on a level, dry surface.
Setup procedure for a reliable first run
- Install the charging base. For the 105, place the AutoEmpty dock where the robot has a clear approach and connect it to power. For the 205, place its charging base in an open, level location.
- Charge the robot fully. Keep the robot docked until the app reports that initial charging is complete.
- Install the current iRobot app and pair the robot. Allow required local-network permissions, then apply any firmware update offered for your model.
- Prepare the floor. Remove loose objects, lift cords, secure rug fringes, and put away anything that could enter a brush or wheel.
- Attach the correct mop hardware. Fit the supplied microfiber pad and add liquid only as directed for the exact model and app settings.
- Run a supervised mapping or cleaning cycle. Watch how the robot crosses thresholds, identifies rugs, and returns to its base. Correct obvious hazards before enabling a recurring schedule.
- Configure rooms and routines. Use room targeting and scheduling where available, then choose vacuum-only, mop-only, or combined cleaning for each routine.
- Set a maintenance reminder. Empty the 205’s compactor or inspect the 105’s dock bag before the advertised maximum interval if your home produces substantial debris.
Price and configuration checks
The 205 product page displayed a US price of $469.99 in the cited snapshot. That is a time-specific manufacturer listing, not a guaranteed current street price. The 105 catalog showed multiple configurations and changing promotions, so a single “Roomba 105 price” is misleading unless it identifies the exact Combo + AutoEmpty bundle.
At checkout, verify the currency, shipping region, inventory status, included dock or accessories, warranty terms, and return window. Regional versions can differ, and promotional prices can expire. If two listings have similar names, compare their model numbers and included hardware rather than relying on a thumbnail or abbreviated headline.

The cited iRobot pages establish the stated hardware designs and advertised functions: AutoEmpty transfer on the 105, onboard DustCompactor storage on the 205, vacuum and mop modes, ClearView LiDAR, and carpet detection. They also provide the 75-day, 60-day, allergen-filtration, and SmartScrub figures as company claims.
They do not establish which robot removes more dirt, leaves fewer streaks, runs more quietly, avoids more obstacles, lasts longer, or costs less to maintain over years. Those outcomes depend on home conditions and need independent comparative measurements. Buy on the storage architecture and documented feature fit, not on an assumption that a larger advertised day count means stronger cleaning.
Bottom line
The Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty is the better fit for buyers who want a separate dock to handle debris and value iRobot’s up-to-75-day hands-free claim. The Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo is the better fit for buyers who want a bagless, dock-free setup and are willing to empty the robot’s onboard compactor, with an advertised capacity of up to 60 days. Because both share the core vacuuming, mopping, LiDAR-mapping, and carpet-detection features, your available floor space and preferred maintenance routine should decide the purchase.
