Iraq’s Ministry of Communications announced plans for five data centers: three in Baghdad, one near Basra’s marine landing station and one anticipated in Mosul. The proposal is intended to attract global companies and host their content and services inside Iraq. The announcement describes planned facilities; it does not confirm that construction has begun or that any of the sites is operating.
Where are Iraq’s five planned data centers?
The Ministry of Communications’ September 26, 2026 announcement identifies five proposed locations, including three in Baghdad. Video News Agency’s report attributes the plan to Ali Yassin, Director-General of the ministry’s General Company for Communications and Informatics.

What is the stated purpose of the facilities?
The ministry’s stated aim is to make the facilities available to major global companies so they can host content and services in Iraq. The September 26 report quotes Yassin describing a dedicated data center intended to attract those companies. The announcement does not identify prospective customers or say that any company has committed to using the facilities.
Are the data centers open or under construction?
The five-site announcement is a plan, not confirmation that construction is underway or that the locations are operational. A separate September 28 account from the Iraqi Council of Representatives said a first data center was expected to open on October 1, 2026, across Baghdad, Basra and Mosul. The parliamentary report does not explain how that expected opening relates to the five locations announced two days earlier, and it does not verify that an opening took place.

These accounts therefore describe different levels of certainty: five planned locations in the ministry announcement, and an opening expectation for a first center in a separate parliamentary report. They do not establish that all five sites were built or opened.

The cited accounts do not specify a project budget, capacity, technical tier, construction start or completion date, procurement process, contractor, operator or technology vendor.
