IPv6 did not fail: it is now used for a substantial share of connections to major services, often without home users noticing. But adoption is still incomplete, and IPv6 is not automatically faster or available in every household. Google reported that 50.30% of its users accessed Google over native IPv6 on September 5, 2026; that is a measure of connections to Google, not the share of all internet traffic or homes with IPv6.
Is IPv6 actually being used?
Yes. Google’s live IPv6 statistics showed 50.30% native IPv6 and 50.30% total IPv6 on September 5, 2026. Those figures describe Google-user access to Google over IPv6. They are not a global traffic share or a residential adoption rate, and they do not mean IPv4 has disappeared.
APNIC Labs measures a different part of the picture. Its system presents between 25 million and 30 million ad impressions per day and has run daily measurements since 2012, according to APNIC’s 2025 explanation of how it measures IPv6. Impressions are not unique people or households. APNIC distinguishes whether a device can reach IPv6-only content from whether it chooses IPv6 for a destination available over both protocols.
Why did IPv6 take so long?
IPv4’s limited address supply led to measures such as more precise address allocation and Network Address Translation, which helped extend the life of the existing system. IPv6 expands the address field to 128 bits, but it is not directly compatible with IPv4. Networks and services therefore had to support both while the transition proceeded.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
That arrangement, called dual stack, lets a device use IPv6 where it is available while continuing to reach IPv4 services. The IETF’s IPv6 specification defines the protocol; APNIC describes dual stack as a long transitional stage that has lasted more than 30 years. A slow transition reflects the coordination required to change a globally deployed network, not proof that IPv6 failed.
Why might IPv6 be running in your home?
Your ISP may provide IPv6, and your router and connected devices may use it automatically. When both IPv4 and IPv6 are available, applications and connection-selection mechanisms can make the protocol choice without requiring you to enter an IPv6 address. As a result, you may use IPv6 without seeing it in everyday browsing.

Home availability depends on your provider’s service in your location and on whether your router supports the provider’s IPv6 handoff, is configured for it, and has IPv6 enabled. The IETF’s RFC 7084 documents basic requirements for IPv6 customer-edge routers; it is a technical standard, not a guarantee that every router or ISP configuration works the same way. There is no single household adoption figure established by the cited measurements.

Should you enable IPv6 on your router?
If your ISP offers IPv6 and your router supports its configuration, using the feature can let your network connect over IPv6 when services and paths support it. Before changing settings or buying equipment, check the provider’s IPv6 availability for your location and the router’s IPv6 status. Router menus differ, so there is no universal setting name or path to provide.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If IPv6 is unavailable, that does not by itself mean your internet connection is broken: IPv4 continues to serve many destinations. If you are considering new equipment, confirm compatibility with your ISP’s specific handoff and configuration requirements. A router purchase alone cannot create IPv6 service your provider does not offer.
Does IPv6 make your internet faster?
Not inherently. APNIC measures round-trip-time differences between IPv4 and IPv6 paths and explains that Happy Eyeballs connection selection uses timing to choose a working protocol. A dual-stack device may use IPv4 for one connection and IPv6 for another; performance depends on the route and provider, not simply on the address format.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
IPv6 also handles packet fragmentation differently: routers do not fragment IPv6 packets in transit. Instead, they send an ICMPv6 Packet Too Big message so the sender can adjust. If a network path mishandles those messages, a connection can have problems, but the cited source does not establish this as a routine issue for home users.
Does IPv6 change your home network’s security?
IPv6 is not inherently unsafe because devices can have globally routable addresses, nor is IPv4 Network Address Translation a substitute for a firewall. Security depends on router configuration and firewall policy. The IETF’s RFC 9099 sets out operational security considerations for IPv6 networks. Keep the router’s security controls configured appropriately whether IPv6 is enabled or not.
