For most people, the right answer is to use both IPv4 and IPv6 when your network supports both. IPv6 can reach IPv6-capable destinations, while IPv4 remains necessary for destinations and networks that have not migrated. You generally do not need to disable IPv4 to use IPv6; this two-protocol arrangement is called dual stack.
The important difference is address capacity: IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses, while IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses. IPv6 also changes parts of the protocol itself, including address configuration and packet handling. Whether you actually use IPv6 depends on your ISP, router, operating system, applications, DNS, and the remote service—not on a single switch in your computer.
What IPv4 and IPv6 are
IPv4 and IPv6 are two versions of the Internet Protocol, the network-layer system that gives devices addresses and moves packets between networks. IPv6 was “designed as the successor to IP version 4 (IPv4),” according to RFC 8200, but the transition is gradual rather than a one-day replacement.
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses
An IPv4 address contains 32 bits. The address space has a theoretical maximum of 232 unique values, although not all values can be assigned to ordinary public devices. IPv4 has been the dominant Internet protocol for decades, so virtually every modern operating system and Internet service still has to account for it.

Because the available public pool is limited, IPv4 networks commonly conserve addresses by sharing one public address among multiple devices. That arrangement can work well, but it adds translation, port-mapping, and troubleshooting considerations. It also means that an address visible to an outside service may represent a network gateway rather than one individual device.
IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses
An IPv6 address contains 128 bits, creating a vastly larger address space. That capacity is the defining reason IPv6 was created: the Internet can assign addresses to far more networks, devices, and services without relying on the same degree of address sharing used in IPv4.
The larger number is not the only change. IPv6 revises header processing and includes capabilities such as address autoconfiguration, scoped multicast, and anycast. Treating IPv6 as merely “IPv4 with longer numbers” misses operational differences that matter to network designers and administrators.

For a user, the practical consequence is not that every device suddenly receives a new public identity or that every connection changes protocol. It is that a compatible host can use the newer protocol when the complete path supports it, while retaining IPv4 for destinations that still require it.
IPv4 and IPv6 compared
| Characteristic | IPv4 | IPv6 |
|---|---|---|
| Address length | 32 bits | 128 bits |
| Role in the transition | Existing protocol that remains widely required for compatibility | Successor protocol being deployed alongside IPv4 |
| Address capacity | Much smaller address space | Vastly larger address space |
| Protocol capabilities highlighted in the specification | Original IPv4 design | Updated header handling, address autoconfiguration, multicast scope, and anycast |
| Interoperability | Does not directly communicate with an IPv6-only endpoint without a transition arrangement | Does not directly communicate with an IPv4-only endpoint without a transition arrangement |
| Typical coexistence model | Operated together with IPv6 in dual-stack networks | Operated together with IPv4 in dual-stack networks |
| General speed advantage | Not established by the cited standards | Not established by the cited standards |
Neither version automatically wins on speed. The standards cited here do not establish a universal performance advantage for IPv4 or IPv6. Real performance depends on the access network, routing, congestion, protocol path, and the service you are contacting.
What the address-size difference does—and does not—mean
A 128-bit address space gives IPv6 far more room for network prefixes, subnets, and endpoints. It does not guarantee that an ISP will delegate a usable prefix, that a router will configure it correctly, or that a website will publish IPv6 reachability. Conversely, an IPv4 address remains perfectly valid for an IPv4 service even though the overall pool is constrained.
The protocols also use different packet and control conventions. Features such as autoconfiguration can reduce manual assignment, while multicast scope and anycast affect how services are discovered and reached. Administrators should therefore plan IPv6 as a protocol with its own behavior, not as a cosmetic change to IPv4 addressing.
Why IPv6 was needed
IPv4’s 32-bit space cannot provide a unique public address for every potential Internet endpoint. Networks therefore use address-sharing techniques and other forms of conservation. The Internet Architecture Board stated in 2016 that the pool of unassigned IPv4 addresses had been exhausted and that dual-stack and IPv6-only deployments were increasing. That statement describes the state of address allocation and transition; it does not mean IPv4 connectivity suddenly stopped working.
IPv6’s 128-bit space removes the same scarcity constraint from the protocol’s basic design. It also makes room for different address-assignment and routing practices. A larger address space does not, by itself, make a connection faster, safer, or more private. Those outcomes depend on how a network is engineered and managed.
Exhaustion of the unassigned pool is therefore an allocation milestone, not a shutdown date. Existing IPv4 addresses continue to be routed, reused, transferred, and supported. The coexistence period lasts because users still need to reach IPv4-only destinations and because organizations cannot replace every router, application, appliance, and service at once.
How IPv4 and IPv6 coexist
Dual stack
A dual-stack host has working IPv4 and IPv6 protocol implementations and can send or receive traffic using either one. RFC 4213 defines how such nodes operate, and RFC 6180 describes dual-stack deployment as a key transition approach.

When a destination is reachable over IPv6, an application and the network may use IPv6. If the destination is IPv4-only, the same device can use IPv4. This is why keeping both protocols available usually gives a home network the broadest compatibility.
Dual stack is not a single appliance or subscription. It is a coordinated state in which the endpoint, local router, upstream provider, name service, security controls, and remote service can all handle the relevant protocol. Operating both versions also creates two policy surfaces: each protocol needs intentional routing, filtering, monitoring, and incident-response coverage.
Why the protocols are not directly interchangeable
An IPv4-only endpoint and an IPv6-only endpoint are speaking different network protocols. An IPv4 packet is not simply understood as an IPv6 packet with a shorter address, and vice versa. Communication between the two sides requires an appropriate transition mechanism, such as a gateway or translation service, or a shared dual-stack path.
End-to-end IPv6 use also requires more than an IPv6-capable laptop. The local network, ISP, DNS or name service, routers, firewalls, applications, and destination all need suitable support. If any required part is IPv4-only, the connection may use IPv4 instead.

DNS and destination reachability
A device can have an IPv6 address and still reach a particular website over IPv4. Name-service records and the destination’s actual network connectivity influence which protocol can be used. Conversely, a service that publishes IPv6 reachability cannot be reached over IPv6 if the customer’s ISP or local equipment does not provide a usable IPv6 path.
This explains why two sites opened from the same browser can take different protocol paths. One destination may have IPv6 records and routing, while another may only be reachable through IPv4. A local address shown in system settings proves configuration on that device, not successful end-to-end reachability.
Which should you use?
For a home user
Leave the router and provider’s normal configuration in place unless you are troubleshooting a specific fault. If your ISP and router support IPv6, allowing it alongside IPv4 is generally the most compatible choice.
- Keep IPv4 enabled for IPv4-only websites, games, work systems, and other services.
- Allow IPv6 so IPv6-capable destinations can use it when the complete path supports it.
- Do not disable IPv4 merely because IPv6 is available.
- Check your ISP and router documentation if IPv6 appears unavailable or unstable.
You usually do not need to buy new equipment simply because IPv6 exists. Hardware becomes relevant when an existing router, modem, network adapter, or managed service lacks the required support. Confirm compatibility with the provider and manufacturer rather than assuming that a recent-looking model supports every IPv6 feature.

Use dual stack while you verify that the whole environment is ready. Inventory the WAN service, edge router, internal routing, DNS, firewall rules, monitoring, VPNs, remote-access tools, and business applications. A device-by-device setting is not enough if a firewall blocks IPv6 or an application assumes every address is IPv4.
Document which services are intended to be reachable over each protocol and test both inbound and outbound behavior. Check management interfaces and vendor support portals as well as customer-facing applications. Make sure help-desk staff and incident responders can recognize IPv6 addresses in tickets, logs, and alerts.
For a network administrator planning IPv6-only operation
An IPv6-only change is appropriate only after you have identified every dependency that still requires IPv4. Confirm how users will reach IPv4-only destinations, how legacy applications will operate, and which transition mechanism your provider and network design support. Test from real client networks, not just from a lab segment.

Plan a rollback and a way to reach equipment if an IPv6 policy or route is wrong. Verify DNS behavior, firewall parity, monitoring, VPN access, and external partners before removing IPv4. An IPv6-only segment can still need a controlled translation or gateway function to communicate with IPv4-only services; it is not automatically isolated from the IPv4 Internet.
For a developer or service owner
Design applications so that an address is not assumed to have a particular length or textual format. Test name resolution and connections on both protocol versions, ensure logging and access-control systems can store IPv6 addresses, and verify that monitoring and abuse controls see IPv6 traffic as well as IPv4 traffic.
Review validation rules, database fields, configuration files, analytics, allowlists, and rate-limit keys. A service can appear healthy in an IPv4-only test while failing for IPv6 users because a listener, certificate policy, firewall rule, or monitoring path was omitted. Test the actual deployment path and destination names that customers use.
How to check whether your connection supports IPv6
- Check the ISP plan and service documentation. Look for explicit IPv6 support, any regional limitations, and whether the provider supplies native IPv6 or a transition service.
- Open the router’s Internet or WAN settings. Look for an IPv6 section, an option to obtain service automatically, and status information showing whether an IPv6 connection has been assigned. Labels differ by manufacturer and firmware.
- Check the operating system’s network details. A connected device may show both an IPv4 address and one or more IPv6 addresses. Seeing an IPv6 address alone does not prove that the wider Internet path works.
- Test an IPv6-capable destination. Use a reputable connectivity test or a service supplied by your ISP. Confirm that the test reports an end-to-end IPv6 path rather than only local address configuration.
- Check applications that matter to you. Test work VPNs, voice or video services, games, printers, remote-access tools, and internal websites. A general browser test cannot reveal every application-specific problem.
If the router has no IPv6 capability, or the ISP does not provide IPv6 service, enabling a setting on one computer will not create an end-to-end IPv6 connection. If support is advertised but testing fails, record whether the failure is local addressing, DNS, routing, firewall policy, or a destination that lacks IPv6; those clues make a provider or vendor ticket more useful.
Do you need to turn off IPv4 to use IPv6?
No. Dual-stack operation is specifically intended to let a node use both protocols. Turning off IPv4 can make IPv4-only destinations unreachable and can break older applications, management systems, VPNs, or devices that have not been upgraded.
Recommended Free Tools
Disable IPv4 only for a clearly defined test or migration plan, and only after checking compatibility. If you are diagnosing a problem, temporarily changing one setting can help isolate the cause, but restore the normal configuration after the test unless your administrator has approved a permanent change.
Security and privacy differences
IPv6 is not automatically safer
Protocol version alone does not secure a connection. Firewalls, host controls, patching, authentication, segmentation, and monitoring remain necessary with IPv4 and IPv6. A network that protects IPv4 traffic but leaves IPv6 unfiltered can create an unintended path around security policy.
When enabling IPv6, review both inbound and outbound rules, remote administration, exposed services, VPN policies, and alerting. Do not assume that an existing IPv4 rule is automatically applied to IPv6; confirm the behavior in the actual router, host firewall, and security tools.
Address translation and endpoint visibility
IPv6 reduces reliance on address translation in many designs. RFC 8200 notes that this can make endpoints more visible and raises privacy considerations. Visibility is not the same as exposure: a correctly configured firewall can control inbound traffic, while a poorly configured network can expose services regardless of whether translation is used.

Operational differences administrators should plan for
Address configuration
IPv6 supports address autoconfiguration, which can reduce manual assignment work but requires administrators to understand how addresses are delegated, renewed, recorded, and filtered. Inventory and documentation systems must accept 128-bit addresses and the notation used to represent them.

Automated assignment is not a substitute for ownership and lifecycle records. Decide how stable service addresses, temporary client addresses, reservations, and delegated prefixes will be represented in DNS and management systems. Test renewal and failure behavior rather than checking only the initial installation.
Routing and multicast scope
The IPv6 specification includes defined multicast scopes and anycast support. These capabilities affect service discovery, routing design, and troubleshooting. Policies that were written only for IPv4 broadcast or address ranges may need to be redesigned rather than copied verbatim.

IPv6 is enabled but no websites use it
Check whether the ISP has delegated usable IPv6 service and whether the router received a network prefix. Then verify DNS and firewall settings. If the destination has no IPv6 reachability, IPv4 is the expected fallback.
Some services work and others fail
This pattern often indicates different protocol support at the destinations or an incomplete path. Compare a working and failing service, inspect whether each has IPv6 name-service records, and test from another network if possible. Keep IPv4 enabled while isolating the issue.
IPv6 connectivity disappears after a router change
Recheck the router’s WAN mode, delegated-prefix settings, firewall policy, and firmware documentation. A replacement router may support IPv6 in principle but require a provider-specific configuration. Confirm that local devices receive addresses after the WAN connection is restored.
Security alerts appear only for IPv6
Audit IPv6 firewall and monitoring rules separately from IPv4. Ensure that exposed services, administrative interfaces, and remote-access tools have the same intended restrictions on both protocols. Do not solve the alert by disabling IPv6 until you understand which control is missing.
A VPN or business application breaks after enabling IPv6
Test the application on a dual-stack client and determine whether the service, VPN concentrator, DNS path, or security policy handles IPv6. Check the vendor’s supported versions and configuration guidance. Keep an IPv4 path available while you correct the specific dependency.
What the deployment evidence actually shows
In RFC 9386, an IETF 2023 deployment-status report, approximately 50% of responding network operators identified dual stack as the most widely deployed IPv6 solution. That is an estimate from an operator poll presented in a deployment report; it is not a current global percentage of Internet users, websites, or traffic.

The IAB’s 7 November 2016 statement described IPv4 address-pool exhaustion and increasing dual-stack and IPv6-only deployments. It also urged standards organizations not to assume IPv4. The statement is historical context for the transition, not evidence that IPv4 access ended.
These dates help explain why dual stack remains normal: IPv6 deployment is substantial, but the installed base of IPv4 services and devices still matters. Availability varies by geography, ISP, router, operating system, application, and destination, so a national or global figure cannot predict an individual connection.
A decision checklist
- Choose dual stack when you want the widest compatibility and your ISP and equipment support IPv6.
- Keep IPv4 available when you use legacy services, older devices, or destinations whose IPv6 support is unknown.
- Plan an IPv6-only network only after testing applications, DNS, security controls, monitoring, and access to IPv4-only services.
- Investigate before disabling a protocol because the fault may be DNS, routing, firewall policy, or provider support rather than IPv4 or IPv6 itself.
- Budget for operations, not just hardware by accounting for testing, documentation, monitoring, policy updates, and staff familiarity with both protocols.
IPv4 remains necessary during the transition, while IPv6 provides the long-term address capacity and protocol capabilities intended for the growing Internet. For most homes and mixed environments, leaving both enabled is the practical answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IPv6 faster than IPv4?
Neither protocol has a universal speed advantage established by the standards. Performance depends on the access network, routing, congestion, protocol path, and destination service.
Can an IPv4-only device connect directly to an IPv6-only service?
No. The endpoints use different protocols. They need dual-stack connectivity or an appropriate gateway, translation service, or other transition arrangement.
Do I need a new computer to use IPv6?
Not necessarily. Many current operating systems support IPv6, but usable service also requires an IPv6-capable router, ISP path, DNS, applications, and destination. Check the documentation for your specific equipment.
Why does my device show an IPv6 address but still use IPv4?
A local IPv6 address does not prove end-to-end reachability. The ISP, DNS, routing, firewall, application, or destination may lack support, so the connection falls back to IPv4.
Is IPv6 safer than IPv4?
IPv6 is not automatically safer. Firewalls, patching, authentication, segmentation, and monitoring are required for both protocols. IPv6 must be filtered and monitored intentionally.
Is IPv6 less private because it reduces address translation?
Not automatically. RFC 8200 notes that reduced reliance on translation can increase endpoint visibility and raises privacy considerations. Address-assignment methods, temporary addresses, application behavior, logging, and network policy determine practical privacy.
Should I disable IPv4 after enabling IPv6?
Usually no. Dual stack is designed to use both, and disabling IPv4 can break IPv4-only websites, work systems, VPNs, games, and older devices. Disable it only for a defined, tested migration or troubleshooting plan.
What should a business test before going IPv6-only?
Test WAN service, routing, DNS, firewalls, VPNs, monitoring, logs, applications, vendor devices, remote access, and access to IPv4-only destinations. Confirm the transition mechanism and test from real client networks before removing IPv4.
Does IPv6 support depend on the website I visit?
Yes. The destination must publish usable IPv6 reachability and have an IPv6 path. A dual-stack client can use IPv4 for one service and IPv6 for another.
The Bottom Line
For most users, keep IPv4 and IPv6 enabled together. IPv6 supplies the larger address space and newer protocol capabilities, while IPv4 preserves access to the enormous installed base of IPv4-only networks and services. Move toward IPv6 deliberately, but do not treat it as a reason to disable IPv4 without testing.
