In India, an IPO subscription figure compares investor bids with the shares offered in an issue or investor category. A final multiple of 2x means bids equal twice the available shares; it does not mean every applicant receives twice the shares, nor does it forecast a guaranteed listing gain. The number is a demand measure whose meaning depends on the category, denominator, exchange source and timestamp.
What IPO subscription data measures
During an Indian initial public offering, investors submit bids for a stated number of shares, usually within a permitted price range for a book-built issue. Subscription data aggregates those bids and compares them with the shares reserved for sale. Exchanges commonly show the result as a multiple: 1x means bids equal the shares offered, 2x means bids equal twice the shares offered, and 0.5x means bids cover half the available shares.
The denominator matters. A figure can refer to the entire issue or only one investor category, such as qualified institutional buyers (QIBs), non-institutional investors (NIIs) or retail investors. An “overall” multiple can therefore conceal very different demand patterns. Always record the issue name, category, number of shares offered, source exchange and time of the snapshot.

Book building creates a moving demand picture
In a book-built issue, bids arrive at different prices during the offer period. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) defines book building as “a process undertaken by which a demand for the securities proposed to be issued by a corporate body is elicited and built up and the price for such securities is assessed for the determination of the quantum of securities to be issued.” The order book helps the issuer and its advisers assess demand while the bid window is open.

Unlike a normal public issue, where the price is known in advance and demand is established at the close, a book-built offer generally has a price range and a final cut-off price determined through the book-building process. Consequently, a number displayed on the first or second day is an interim observation, not the final subscription result.
How to read a subscription multiple correctly
Use the formula and the right denominator
The basic calculation is:
Subscription multiple = total valid bids for shares ÷ shares offered in the same scope
If a retail category offers 1,000,000 shares and receives bids for 3,000,000 shares, its subscription is 3x. That does not establish how many shares any one applicant will receive. If an exchange instead reports bids for the whole issue, dividing by a category’s offer would produce a misleading result.
Keep category, time and source aligned

NSE cautions that its graphical bid display “indicates bids position and not necessarily the subscription to the issue.” Treat a live chart as a position update unless the page clearly labels the number as a final, category-specific subscription figure.

Why category-wise demand matters
QIB or institutional category
Institutional bidding can be large enough to dominate an overall headline number. It may also arrive later in the offer window, so an early overall multiple can understate the final institutional participation. A strong QIB figure does not describe retail demand, and it should not be used as a substitute for examining the other pools.
NII or non-institutional category
The NII segment is reported separately from retail and can show a different level of oversubscription. Comparing an NII multiple with a retail multiple without identifying the category is an apples-to-oranges comparison, even when both are published for the same issue.
Retail category
Retail demand is its own category-level measure. If the practical question is whether a retail application is likely to receive shares, the retail figure and the issue’s official basis-of-allotment document are more relevant than an overall multiple. A headline total cannot reveal how applications will be handled within the retail pool.

Subscription data changes as bids are entered, modified or withdrawn during the permitted bidding period. A report that says “2x on day one” should be read as a timestamped snapshot. It is not equivalent to a final 2x result. For a reliable comparison, compare final figures with final figures, or label every interim number with its exact time and day.

Exchange pages may show bid counts, bid quantities and category totals in different formats. Some displays are exchange-specific; others provide a consolidated view. Keep the page’s own scope visible in your notes. If two portals appear to disagree, first check whether one is showing an NSE-only position, a BSE-only position, a cumulative total or a later update.
What subscription data cannot predict
It cannot guarantee a listing gain
A high multiple proves that bids exceeded the available supply by that ratio. It does not establish the price at which the shares will trade after listing or the direction of the first-day move. The Government of India’s Economic Survey 2020-21 states that expected listing price and subscription amount are “quite uncertain apriori” and notes that losses have been large in some years.
Historical figures illustrate the limitation rather than provide a current forecast. The same Economic Survey discussed average total subscriptions of roughly 20–40 times for Indian IPOs over the last five years covered by that report, while noting lower averages in earlier years. It also reported that nearly 60 per cent of IPOs had positive listing gains in 2019 and that losses were large in some years. Those are period-specific observations from a 2020-21 government publication, not probabilities for a new issue.

The overall multiple is not an applicant-level probability. Allotment depends on the category, valid applications, the shares reserved for that category and the issue’s published basis of allotment. The correct evidence for a particular applicant is the official allotment information and verification facility for that issue, not a headline subscription number.

It cannot measure company quality or fair value
Subscription data records bids relative to supply. It does not by itself evaluate revenue, debt, cash flow, governance, valuation, industry risk or the price investors may consider fair after listing. Those questions require the issue documents and independent financial analysis.
It cannot show what happens after allotment
Post-allotment trading behavior is a separate subject. A 2024 SEBI study found that 54% of IPO shares allotted to investors, excluding anchor investors, were sold within a week. That statistic describes observed selling behavior across the study’s population; it does not show that subscription multiples predicted the result for any particular issue.
Where to find authoritative figures
SEBI’s securities-market data directory points readers to official NSE and BSE resources for current and upcoming IPO information, bid and allotment verification, and performance tracking. Use those exchange pages as the primary reference instead of relying on an unlabeled screenshot or an aggregator whose denominator is unclear.

- Open the issue-information section on the NSE or BSE site identified through SEBI’s market-data directory.
- Select the specific IPO and note the offer dates, price band, category-wise shares offered and the page’s update time.
- For a live view, record whether the display says bid position, bid details, cumulative bids or subscription. Do not silently treat a bid-position graphic as a final multiple.
- At the close, save the final category-wise figures and indicate whether they are exchange-specific or consolidated.
- After the issue, use the exchange’s allotment-verification and performance resources, along with the issue’s basis-of-allotment disclosure, for applicant-level and listing information.
A practical method for comparing two IPOs
- Define the question. Decide whether you are comparing demand, checking an allotment situation or studying post-listing performance. One multiple cannot answer all three.
- Match the category. Compare retail with retail, QIB with QIB and overall with overall.
- Match the stage. Use final-close data for both issues, or label each interim snapshot with its date and time.
- Match the denominator. Confirm that both figures use category shares or both use total-issue shares.
- Record the source scope. Identify NSE, BSE or consolidated data and preserve the page’s terminology.
- Separate description from inference. Report what the bids show, then investigate allotment and listing outcomes with their own official records.
Common interpretation mistakes and fixes
- Calling a day-one number “final demand.” Fix: describe it as an interim snapshot and include the timestamp.
- Using the overall multiple to estimate a retail application. Fix: use the retail category and the official basis-of-allotment information.
- Assuming 10x means a tenfold return. Fix: explain that 10x refers only to bids divided by shares offered.
- Mixing exchange displays. Fix: state whether the figure is NSE-only, BSE-only or consolidated.
- Presenting historical averages as today’s expectation. Fix: name the publisher and period, such as the Economic Survey 2020-21, and avoid turning it into a forecast.
- Treating demand as a valuation verdict. Fix: read the issue disclosures and assess financial and market risks separately.
A worked example
Suppose an issue offers 2 million retail shares. At noon on the second day, the exchange shows bids for 3 million retail shares: the interim retail position is 1.5x. By the close, bids rise to 8 million, producing a final retail subscription of 4x. Neither number says that a particular applicant will receive one-quarter of the requested shares. The first is a time-stamped position; the second is a final category ratio. To know an applicant’s result, consult the issue’s allotment announcement and verification service.

If the same issue’s QIB category closes at 12x while retail closes at 4x, the correct description is category-specific demand, not “the IPO was 12x for everyone.” If one portal reports a different total, check whether it updated later or used an exchange-specific rather than consolidated count.
How to use the number responsibly
Subscription data is most useful as a transparent record of bidding pressure during an offer. It can help you see whether demand is building, which categories are participating and how the final book compares with the shares available. Its value is descriptive: it tells you what was bid, in what scope and at what time.
For a complete decision, keep three records separate: the category-wise subscription table, the official allotment and basis-of-allotment information, and the post-listing price history. Combining them without preserving their different dates and purposes creates conclusions the data cannot support.
