For an iPhone X, choose a case explicitly labeled for that model, with shock-absorbing construction and a raised edge around the screen. A separate screen protector can add scratch protection, but check that it fits both the iPhone X and the case. No case guarantees that a phone will survive every drop.
What to look for in an iPhone X case
- Exact model fit: Confirm the listing names iPhone X. Do not assume a case for a newer iPhone fits; even similar model names can refer to different dimensions.
- Shock absorption: Look for construction that combines a firm outer shell with material intended to absorb impact. A product description can tell you what the manufacturer claims, but it does not establish real-world performance.
- Screen clearance: A raised lip or bezel helps keep the display from directly contacting a flat surface when the phone lands face down. It cannot protect the screen in every impact.
- Handling and coverage: More layers or a front cover can add coverage, but may also make a case bulkier. Check the actual listing for dimensions, grip, and the condition of the item.
How the historical iPhone X case options differ
OtterBox announced several case designs for the iPhone X in 2017. Their described constructions offer different trade-offs; the announcement does not establish current stock or provide a shared measurement of bulk.

OtterBox’s September 12, 2017 announcement describes these designs and names Alpha Glass screen guards for its iPhone X-era lineup. It is a historical product announcement, not confirmation that any option is currently available.

How to interpret drop-test claims
Drop-test numbers are manufacturer claims tied to a product and a test method, not promises about what will happen in a particular fall. Speck’s archived Presidio Clear page says the case was drop tested to 8 feet and identifies it for iPhone XS/X. The page is marked sold out on Speck’s website; the claim does not establish current availability elsewhere or prove that this case outperforms other models. See Speck’s Presidio Clear product page.

OtterBox said each iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X case design seeking its Drop+ seal underwent at least 24 tests across more than 238 hours. That is the company’s 2017 description of its testing—not independent comparative evidence. The Speck height claim and OtterBox test count use different descriptions and should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison. The available manufacturer sources do not provide an independent, controlled comparison of iPhone X cases or a statistical estimate of how much a particular case reduces breakage.
Impact surface, angle, height, and the case’s condition can affect the outcome; the cited sources do not quantify those factors for a specific iPhone X case. Speck also says no case can guarantee that a phone will never be damaged. Read Speck’s support explanation.

Should you add a screen protector?
A case and a screen protector address different risks: a raised case edge can provide clearance from a flat surface, while a screen guard can help protect against scratches. OtterBox’s 2017 announcement named Alpha Glass guards and specified case families it supported at the time. That does not verify compatibility for a current listing. Before buying, confirm that the protector explicitly fits iPhone X and that its manufacturer lists it as compatible with your chosen case. Follow the protector’s installation directions; a precision-fit case may not accommodate accessories that change the phone’s dimensions.

What a case does not establish
- Guaranteed survival: Manufacturer tests do not guarantee that the phone will remain undamaged in every fall.
- Water protection: Do not infer waterproofing from drop-protection claims. OtterBox’s 2017 announcement explicitly said its listed iPhone X-era cases were not water-protective.
- Present availability: The cited OtterBox lineup is historical, and the cited Speck page is marked sold out on Speck’s site. Neither source verifies current inventory, prices, seller quality, or third-party listing condition.
Purchase checks
- Confirm the case listing names iPhone X, rather than relying on a newer model’s compatibility.
- Check the case’s construction and whether it has a raised screen edge or front cover.
- Review the listing’s dimensions, grip details, condition, and seller information to judge the trade-off between coverage and bulk.
- If adding a screen protector, verify its iPhone X fit and compatibility with the selected case before purchase.
