AirPort Utility is the best-supported place to start: Apple documents its Wi-Fi Scanner for iPhone, which can display nearby networks, their signal readings (RSSI), channels, and other details. Enable Wi-Fi Scanner in the app’s Settings entry, then open AirPort Utility and start a scan. A strong reading can help you compare locations, but it does not by itself tell you whether your internet is fast or reliable.
Which iPhone app should you use to check Wi-Fi signal strength?
Start with Apple’s AirPort Utility. Apple’s Wi-Fi roaming documentation describes the app’s scanner as showing nearby wireless networks, including SSID, BSSID, RSSI, channel, and scan-time information. Apple’s documentation was accessed on October 7, 2026; app availability and interface labels can change, so confirm the current App Store listing and iOS instructions if a setting is missing.
To turn on the scanner, open the iPhone’s Settings, select AirPort Utility, and enable Wi-Fi Scanner. Then open AirPort Utility and start a scan. Apple says scans cover available bands at four-second intervals. The scanner runs continuously by default; Apple’s documentation says the user-selected scan duration can be set to a maximum of 60 seconds.

What does an iPhone Wi-Fi signal reading tell you?
RSSI means received signal strength indicator: it represents the radio signal the phone receives from a wireless network. Use it to compare signal conditions—for example, in two rooms, or before and after moving closer to the router. Keep the phone position and test conditions as consistent as you reasonably can.
RSSI is not a measurement of internet speed, latency, or overall reliability. A strong radio signal does not prove that the router has a working internet connection, that the broadband service is performing well, or that the network is free of congestion or other problems.
Apple says signal strength is one factor in how a device chooses among known networks. Its explanation also considers network preference, Wi-Fi standard, frequency band, and security. Apple Support puts it this way: “The wireless network with the strongest signal has highest priority.” That statement describes one factor in network selection, not a guarantee that the strongest signal will provide the best internet performance.
Apple’s deployment documentation gives an iPhone roaming example for network design: an iPhone 5s or later may begin searching at a documented −70 dBm threshold, and a candidate access point may need to be at least 8 dB stronger while the phone is transmitting or 12 dB stronger while it is idle. These are roaming criteria in Apple’s documented context, not universal consumer cutoffs for labeling a signal “good” or “bad.”
How can you improve an iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection?
Compare readings around the home
Run a scan in the room where the connection is poor and in a location nearer the router. Compare the RSSI and channel information rather than relying on a single reading. If the signal improves substantially nearer the router, distance or obstacles may be contributing to the problem.
Reduce distance, interference, and obstructions
Move closer to the router when possible and consider whether nearby electronics or building materials are affecting the signal. Apple lists power cables, microwave ovens, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones as possible sources of interference. Apple Support notes: “Wireless interference can cause Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices to disconnect or perform poorly, but you can take steps to reduce or overcome it.”

- [Durable and Portable Design] Crafted from aluminum alloy, this wifi analyzer is both lightweight and robust. its compact size and durable construction make it perfect and tech enthusiasts who need a reliable tool for optimizing home or office networks.
- [Real-time Wifi Signal Analysis] This advanced wifi analyzer allows you to monitor and analyze both 2.4g and 5g wifi signals in real time. identify crowded frequency points and switch to less congested channels to significantly improve your wifi communication quality and reduce interference for a smoother online experience.
- [Fast and Efficient Charging] Featuring a built-in lithium battery charging management circuit, this wifi signal scanner recharges in just about 1.5 hours. the modern type c charging interface ensures quick and convenient with a red light indicating charging and a green light signaling a full charge.
- [Long-lasting Battery Life] The built-in 750mah lithium battery offers impressive performance with a working current of approximately 160ma. enjoy up to 4 hours of continuous usage on a single charge, making it ideal for extended network troubleshooting sessions or on-the-go diagnostics.
- [Crystal Clear Color Display] Equipped with a vibrant 2.4-inch tft color display, this wifi signal usage analyzer provides easy-to-read visual data. the screen clearly shows signal strength, frequency usage, and battery level in the upper right corner, ensuring you always have the information you need at a glance.
Apple’s obstruction guidance rates wood, glass, and many synthetic materials as low in interference potential; water, brick, and marble as medium; plaster, concrete, and bulletproof glass as high; and metal as very high. These are qualitative categories, not a precise prediction for every building or device.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, try the other band and compare how the connection behaves where you use the iPhone. Apple notes that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both use 2.4 GHz and that moving more Wi-Fi devices to 5 GHz may help in some situations. Results depend on the router, device, layout, and surrounding interference.
Check the router’s channel
Channel congestion can affect performance even when the phone receives a strong signal. Check whether your router can select a less-interfered-with channel automatically or lets you change it. Apple notes that many routers scan for a channel automatically at startup or after a reset; router controls vary by model.
Separate a Wi-Fi problem from an internet-service problem
If the iPhone connects to Wi-Fi but cannot get online, check whether other devices on the same network can access the internet. Also check whether the iPhone has the same problem on another network. If several devices are affected, inspect the router’s connection and firmware and consider restarting the router and modem. If only one room has trouble, range, interference, or obstructions are more plausible leads than an iPhone signal meter alone can establish.
Apple recommends reserving a network-settings reset for when other solutions fail. Resetting removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords as well as other network settings, so it is not a harmless first step.

A weak reading in a particular location is a clue, not a purchase recommendation. First compare readings in different locations, test the available bands, and check for interference, obstructions, and channel issues. If coverage remains inadequate across the places you need Wi-Fi, then assess router coverage for your home’s layout, supported bands and Wi-Fi standard, channel management, and compatibility with your internet plan and devices. A mesh system may be relevant for a large home with coverage gaps, but the scanner alone cannot establish that you need one.
