Neither iPhone nor Samsung Galaxy phones have a source-backed, across-the-board security win. Compare the exact models you are considering: how long each is supported, how updates reach it, which hardware protections it includes, and what threats you need to defend against. Apple and Samsung document meaningful security controls, but those descriptions are not a controlled head-to-head test.
How to compare iPhone and Samsung security
A brand name alone does not tell you how protected a particular phone will be over its useful life. A newer device still receiving security fixes may be a better choice than an older model near the end of its support period. Use this checklist for the specific iPhone and Galaxy models you are considering:
- Check support for the exact model. Look it up in the manufacturer’s current security-update information. A maximum support commitment is not the same as a guarantee for every device.
- Check update cadence and delivery. Find the model’s scheduled update group and confirm that updates are available in your region. A schedule does not mean every device receives a fix on the same date.
- Verify hardware features. Check the device documentation rather than assuming that a feature is included across an entire product family.
- Match protection to your risk. Everyday security needs differ from the needs of someone who may be targeted with sophisticated attacks; extra restrictions can also reduce convenience.
These checks matter because security depends on both a platform’s protections and whether a particular device continues to receive fixes. The vendor documents below explain design features and policies, not a measured overall ranking.
What Apple documents about iPhone security
Hardware, system security, and signed updates
Apple’s Apple Platform Security guide, dated March 2026, describes security capabilities built into Apple hardware and protections spanning startup, software updates, and ongoing operating-system operation. Apple summarizes its approach this way: “Secure software requires a foundation of security built into hardware.” That is Apple’s description of its design, not an independent comparison with Samsung.

Apple also documents an authenticated update process: iPhone and iPad use a hardware-based root of trust and system software authorization to check that an operating-system version is signed by Apple before installation. App isolation
Apple says third-party iOS apps are sandboxed. An app’s access to information outside its own data is mediated by operating-system services. This is a documented isolation control; it does not mean every possible attack path is eliminated. Apple explains the mechanism in its security documentation on runtime processes.

Lockdown Mode is for unusually high-risk situations
Lockdown Mode is an optional protective setting for a small group of people who may face highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. Apple says it restricts certain apps, websites, and features to reduce potential attack surfaces, with some loss of functionality. Its stated purpose is narrow: “Lockdown Mode helps protect devices against extremely rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks.” Apple Support published that description on September 18, 2026, in About Lockdown Mode. It is not a general-purpose security score or a setting every iPhone owner needs to enable.
What Samsung documents about Galaxy security
Knox Vault on supported devices
Samsung describes Knox Vault as “an isolated, tamper-proof, secure subsystem with its own processor and memory.” The subsystem is designed to keep sensitive information—including hardware-backed Android Keystore keys, biometric data, and credentials—separate from the main Android processor. Samsung’s Knox documentation last updated its Knox Vault page on April 30, 2026. Availability can vary by model, so verify the specific Galaxy phone’s documentation before treating Knox Vault as a deciding feature.

Security-update support depends on the model
Samsung’s security-update scope page says that, as of January 2024, eligible Galaxy devices could receive security updates for up to seven years. “Up to” is a maximum for eligible devices, not a promise that every Galaxy phone receives seven years of updates. The same page groups supported devices into monthly, quarterly, or biannual update schedules and cautions that release timing varies by device and service version. Check the Samsung Security Updates Scope for the exact model.
Samsung’s September 2026 security bulletin documents a monthly Security Maintenance Release process for major flagship models and lists patches for Android issues and Samsung-specific vulnerabilities. A bulletin shows what a release contains; it does not guarantee that every model receives it on the same day.

Which should you choose?
If two candidate phones meet your needs, compare their remaining support and update schedules first. Then confirm the hardware features on each exact model and consider whether you need ordinary platform protections or an option aimed at a higher-risk threat model. The available vendor documentation establishes that both platforms describe substantial security measures; it does not establish that one brand is categorically safer.

Before buying or continuing to use either phone, check its current manufacturer support listing and install available software updates promptly. If a specific phone is no longer receiving security fixes, its brand’s general security features do not replace those missing updates.
