Choose an iPhone if you want iOS and Apple’s ecosystem, or a Samsung Galaxy if you prefer Android and One UI. For a direct flagship comparison, Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra are both large, similarly priced options: the iPhone highlights Apple’s listed video features, while the Galaxy offers dedicated 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras and weighs less. Neither is the right choice for everyone, and the published battery figures do not establish which lasts longer in everyday use.
Which is better: iPhone or Samsung Galaxy?
“Better” depends first on the software and devices you want to live with. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want iOS, use Apple devices or services, and value Apple’s listed Pro video options. Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you prefer Android with Samsung’s One UI, want dedicated 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras, or would rather carry the lighter of these two flagships.
Those are examples, not a verdict for every phone in either family. Apple and Samsung also sell smaller or less expensive models. Compare phones at similar price and feature tiers instead of treating “iPhone” and “Galaxy” as single models. [Apple iPhone 18 Pro specifications; Samsung Galaxy S26 series]
How do the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra compare?
These 2026 flagships share a 6.9-inch listed display size, but differ in weight, camera hardware, software and the figures their manufacturers publish. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent, same-condition head-to-head test.

Screen size is measured diagonally; it does not tell you exactly how much usable display area you get or whether a phone feels comfortable in your hand. Camera resolution and zoom labels also do not, on their own, establish which phone takes better pictures. The video specifications describe different options and workflows, not an independent quality comparison. [Apple iPhone 18 Pro specifications; Samsung Galaxy S26 series]
Choose by software and the devices you already use
Choose iPhone if you want Apple’s software environment
The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs iOS 27 and includes Apple Intelligence features listed for iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple says Siri AI is in beta, and that language, region and feature availability can vary. If you rely on particular Apple devices, services or apps, check that the exact features you use are available where you live before buying. Choose Galaxy if you prefer Android and One UI

Samsung states that the Galaxy S26 series receives seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. A separate Apple disclosure hosted in Ireland specifies a five-year minimum guaranteed period for OS security, corrective and functionality updates for iPhone 17; it does not establish the commitment for iPhone 18 Pro Max. Treat those statements as model-specific rather than directly comparable guarantees. [Samsung Galaxy S26 series; Apple iPhone comparison and product information]

Which phone suits your camera and video use?
Pick the Galaxy for its listed telephoto choices
Samsung specifies separate 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras on the S26 Ultra, alongside 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom options. That hardware may suit someone who often wants those framing choices. It does not prove that the Galaxy produces better photos overall; the available specifications are not an independent camera test.
Pick the iPhone for its listed Pro video options
Apple lists Dolby Vision video modes and ProRes options, including 4K ProRes recording with external recording. These may fit a workflow that uses those formats and recording capabilities. Samsung lists 4K recording at 120 frames per second in Pro Video and 8K at 30 frames per second. The modes serve different preferences, and the cited specifications do not establish a head-to-head video winner. [Apple iPhone 18 Pro specifications; Samsung Galaxy S26 series]

Will either phone last longer on a charge?
The published numbers are not directly comparable. Apple’s figure for iPhone 18 Pro Max is up to 45 hours of video playback under Apple’s specified method, tested with preproduction units. Samsung lists a 5,000 mAh typical battery capacity for Galaxy S26 Ultra and says it can reach up to 75% charge in around 30 minutes with supported wired charging; Samsung says actual battery life varies with use and network conditions, and the power adapter is sold separately. Capacity, a manufacturer playback estimate and charging speed measure different things. The cited figures do not show which phone lasts longer in everyday use. [Apple iPhone 18 Pro specifications; Samsung Galaxy S26 series]
Do you need a 6.9-inch flagship?
Both models have a listed 6.9-inch display, and the iPhone weighs 35 g more than the Galaxy according to their specifications. If a phone this large or heavy does not suit you, consider a smaller model before choosing between these two.

These are other tiers, not equivalent substitutes in every feature. Their listed U.S. starting prices are $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max, $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro, $1,299.99 for Galaxy S26 Ultra, $1,099.99 for Galaxy S26+ and $899.99 for Galaxy S26. What should you check before buying or switching?
Compare the actual price in your market
The listed starting prices are U.S. figures. Retail prices, regional availability, carrier versions and promotions vary. Compare the storage capacity you want and the full cost for the same unlocked or carrier arrangement. Trade-in values and carrier offers depend on eligibility and current terms; check the offer details rather than treating a headline discount as guaranteed.
Make a switching checklist
If you are moving between iPhone and Galaxy, check these dependencies before committing. The available product information does not establish a complete or lossless transfer path for all data, apps and purchases.

Consider water resistance a safeguard, not an invitation
Apple lists IP68 for iPhone 18 Pro Max, rated to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529 in controlled lab conditions; Apple says resistance can decrease with normal wear. Samsung lists IP68 for Galaxy S26 Ultra and says it is rated for up to 1.5 metres of freshwater for 30 minutes, warning that resistance may diminish with wear. The manufacturers’ stated test conditions differ, so these ratings do not make the phones interchangeable for underwater use. [Apple iPhone 18 Pro specifications; Samsung Galaxy S26 series]
