Switching between iPhone and Android changes the setup process, the way messages are addressed, which data can be copied automatically, and how your phone number is activated. It is not a perfect clone: some content transfers, some reappears after you sign in to an account, and some must be exported or moved manually.
Start the migration before completing setup on the new phone. Apple and Google put their most complete transfer tools inside initial setup, while carrier, eSIM, cable, storage and messaging decisions can determine whether the move is smooth or requires a second attempt.
What changes when you switch platforms?
The practical difference is less about a single “better” operating system and more about what happens to your existing digital life. A platform switch affects six separate things: setup timing, transferable data, apps and purchases, messaging identity, phone-number activation, and the hardware used for the copy.

These are current support instructions, not a promise that every model has the same screens. Manufacturers, Android versions, carriers and countries can change which options appear.

Prepare both phones before starting
A few checks prevent the most disruptive failures, especially when the old phone is about to be wiped, traded in or disconnected from the carrier.
- Update and unlock both devices. Install pending system updates, charge both phones and keep the old phone’s passcode available. Do not erase the old phone until you have verified the new one.
- Check destination storage. The new phone needs enough free space for the selected photos, videos, messages and files. If it is nearly full, remove or archive content before starting.
- Confirm the connection method. For a wired move, identify both phones’ ports. Google’s documented iPhone-to-Android route uses a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or an adapter; Apple says a USB-C cable can connect compatible Android and iPhone models. A cable is not mandatory when a supported wireless route is available.
- Keep both phones connected. Leave the devices powered and attached to Wi-Fi or the cable until the transfer reports completion. Interrupting it can leave an apparently finished phone with missing categories.
- Check accounts and cloud-only content. Know the passwords for Apple, Google, messaging and other important accounts. Content that exists only in iCloud or in an account may need a separate download, export or sync step.
- Plan the number move separately. Ask the carrier whether the new phone, country and plan support the intended SIM or eSIM activation before the old phone loses service.
- Record authentication methods. Banking apps, password managers, authenticator apps and work profiles may require their own re-enrollment. A platform transfer does not automatically transfer every credential or security key.
Moving from Android to iPhone
Use Move to iOS during initial setup
Apple’s guided process is designed for a new or freshly erased iPhone. During setup, choose the option to transfer data from Android, install Move to iOS on the Android phone, enter the temporary code shown by the iPhone, select the categories and leave both phones alone until the progress indicator finishes. Apple’s instructions are at Move from Android to iPhone or iPad.
- Turn on the iPhone and proceed through setup until the transfer screen appears.
- Choose From Android.
- Open Move to iOS on the Android phone and follow its pairing steps.
- Enter the iPhone’s one-time code on the Android phone.
- Select the content categories you want to copy, then keep both phones powered and nearby.
- Finish iPhone setup, sign in to your Apple Account and install any apps that were not matched automatically.
A USB-C connection may improve transfer speed, but the exact cable depends on the connectors on both devices. Wireless transfer remains the alternative when the phones support it.
What Apple’s flow can copy
Apple lists contacts, message history and SMS, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, accessibility and display settings, web bookmarks, email accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history and calendars as transferable categories. Some free apps may be matched when an equivalent app is available in both stores and supports the transfer.
Matching an app is not the same as moving its account, subscription, saved data or purchase history. After setup, open each important app and verify that you can sign in and that its data has synchronized.

Move the items that need manual handling
Apple states that “Music, books and PDFs need to be moved over manually.” Export those items from the Android phone or its computer library, then import them into an iPhone-compatible app or service. Treat locally stored recordings, downloads and documents the same way if they were not selected by the transfer.
Decide where Google data should live
Google’s checklist asks Android users to decide whether photos and calendars should be imported into Apple Photos and Apple Calendar. You can instead keep using Google Photos and Google Calendar on the iPhone: install the apps and sign in to the same Google Account. The account data remains available there even when it is not copied into Apple’s native apps. See Google Account Help for the account-based approach.
If the iPhone is already set up
Apple’s guided Android transfer is tied to setup. If you want that exact flow after completing setup, erase the iPhone and start again. If erasing is unacceptable, move content manually: sign in to Google services, copy documents and music, install apps individually, and use each service’s export or restore process for data that is not cloud-synchronized.
Moving from iPhone to Android
Choose cable or wireless transfer during Android setup
Google’s Android Help describes a wired transfer during initial setup and a wireless Switch to Android option on supported devices. The wireless instructions require iOS 15 or later. Cable compatibility, the categories offered and whether a post-setup transfer is possible vary by Android manufacturer and model. Follow the prompts on the new Android phone rather than assuming another model has the same menu.
- Start Android setup and choose the option to copy apps and data from an iPhone.
- For a wired move, connect the phones with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or the appropriate adapter. For wireless setup, follow the pairing instructions shown on the Android phone.
- Authorize the connection on the iPhone, choose the available categories and keep both devices powered until the copy completes.
- Sign in to your Google Account and reinstall apps from Google Play.
- Complete the separate SIM or eSIM activation with your carrier.

Know what the documented path does not copy
Google says the described transfer does not move photos and videos stored only in iCloud, paid apps and in-app purchases, sign-in information, Safari bookmarks, alarms, contacts synced to accounts, health data, voice memos, eSIM or files. “Does not transfer” means the setup tool does not carry that category through its documented path; it does not mean every item is permanently lost.

- iCloud photos and videos: Request an iCloud transfer where available or back up the library to Google Photos, then let the Android phone download or index it.
- Paid apps and purchases: Find the Android version and check whether the developer offers an account-based restore. An iOS purchase does not automatically become a Google Play purchase.
- Sign-in information: Re-enter credentials or use the service’s own account recovery. A copied app installation does not carry passwords by default.
- Safari bookmarks: Export or sync them through a browser or account that both platforms support.
- Health data, voice memos and files: Use the originating app’s export, download or computer-copy function before wiping the iPhone.
- eSIM: Ask the carrier for activation or a QR code; the data-transfer wizard cannot substitute for carrier provisioning.
Messaging is the most visible change
Turn off iMessage before moving to Android
Before removing the SIM from an iPhone, turn off iMessage in the Messages settings. Google warns that otherwise SMS and MMS messages can continue routing toward the old iPhone. If the old phone or SIM is already unavailable, deregister the phone number from iMessage using Apple’s online process, as described by Google Messages Help.
After the number is active on Android, ask frequent contacts to start a fresh conversation if messages still follow the old thread. Google specifically notes that some existing group chats with iPhone users may need to be started again.
What RCS adds—and what it does not
RCS can make supported Android-to-iPhone conversations feel closer to modern messaging than basic SMS or MMS. Google lists typing indicators, read receipts in one-to-one conversations, group-chat features and high-resolution photo and video sharing for supported conversations.
Availability depends on the carrier and country, and not every conversation or device exposes every feature. Privacy also differs from an all-Google-Messages conversation: Google states, “RCS chats with iPhone users don’t have end-to-end encryption.” Do not treat the presence of an RCS label as proof that a cross-platform chat has the same encryption model as a Google Messages conversation with another Google Messages user. Move the phone number and eSIM separately
A successful content copy does not activate cellular service. SIM or eSIM provisioning is a carrier operation and can fail even when photos and contacts transferred correctly.
Android to iPhone eSIM
Apple says an eSIM moved from a non-Apple phone may require carrier activation or a QR code. Apple also documents a newer direct Android-to-iPhone eSIM method with iOS 26 or later, but it is limited to selected smartphone manufacturers, carriers and eligible device combinations. Check eligibility with the carrier before disconnecting the old phone. Details are in Set up eSIM on iPhone.
iPhone to Android activation
Google’s transfer flow does not carry the iPhone’s eSIM. Obtain the Android phone’s activation instructions from the carrier, which may provide an app, QR code or manual details. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi until calls and texts work on the Android phone, then test incoming calls, outgoing calls, SMS, mobile data and voicemail.

- Restore locally stored data using the app’s official export or backup process.
- Re-enroll security-sensitive apps, work profiles and authenticators before wiping the old phone.
For contacts, calendars, photos and mail, decide whether you want the destination platform’s native apps or the original cloud provider’s apps. Signing in can restore account data without importing it into the phone’s native database.

When a transfer fails or looks incomplete
Use the symptom to choose the fix rather than repeating the entire process blindly. Google lists insufficient storage, interrupted transfers, iCloud-only media, organizational management and an unsuitable setup state among common causes. Its troubleshooting guidance is at Can’t transfer data to a new Android device.
The transfer stops or reports that there is not enough space
- Compare the selected data size with free storage on the destination.
- Transfer photos and videos in batches, or leave large cloud libraries in their original service.
- Remove duplicate downloads from the old phone before retrying.
- Use a cable when wireless connectivity is unstable, provided the connectors are compatible.
Photos are missing after iPhone-to-Android setup
Check whether the photos were stored only in iCloud rather than locally on the iPhone. Use an iCloud transfer request or Google Photos backup, then allow time for indexing and download. A missing item in the setup copy is not proof that the original iCloud library was deleted.
Messages still arrive on the old iPhone
Confirm that iMessage is off and that the phone number is active on the Android SIM or eSIM. If the old device is gone, complete number deregistration. Recreate affected group chats and ask a contact to send a test SMS rather than an iMessage.

Work or school management can restrict copying, account enrollment or app installation. Contact the administrator before resetting either phone; removing management without authorization may violate the organization’s policy.
The guided option is missing
Check whether setup has already been completed, whether the Android model supports wireless transfer, whether iOS meets the stated requirement for that route, and whether the carrier or device region changes eSIM availability. If the guided path is unavailable, use account sync and manual export instead of assuming the data cannot be recovered.
A low-risk switching sequence
For most people, this order minimizes downtime:
- Inventory essential data, apps, authenticators and work access on the old phone.
- Check destination storage, ports, cable or adapter, software versions and carrier eligibility.
- Start the new phone’s setup and run the platform’s supported transfer flow.
- Leave both phones powered and connected until the transfer finishes.
- Activate the SIM or eSIM and test calls, SMS, mobile data and voicemail.
- If moving from iPhone to Android, verify iMessage deregistration before removing the old phone from service.
- Sign in to cloud accounts, reinstall critical apps and restore data that the wizard excluded.
- Open photos, contacts, calendars, messages, files and authenticator apps on the new phone to verify them.
- Only after verification, back up and erase the old phone.
The result is a controlled migration rather than an assumption that one platform can reproduce the other exactly. The biggest changes you will notice are the setup-dependent transfer window, separate app-store ownership, messaging registration and carrier-controlled number activation.
