A virus warning inside a web page on your iPhone is usually a fraudulent ad, not proof that your phone is infected. Don’t tap its scan button, call its number, install anything it recommends, or pay to remove the alleged virus. Apple does issue separate threat notifications and malware alerts, but they appear in different places and call for different responses.
First, identify where the warning appears
The warning’s source matters more than its wording or use of Apple logos. Compare where it appears, whether it names an installed app, and what it asks you to do.

What to do about a browser virus pop-up
Apple says pop-ups encountered while browsing that claim to find viruses or security problems are usually fraudulent ads. They may try to get you to install damaging software, disclose personal information, or pay money. Apple branding or technical-sounding language does not make the warning genuine.
- Do not interact with the warning. Don’t tap “scan,” call a displayed number, download an app, install a configuration profile, provide account details, or pay.
- Close the tab or browser. If the page won’t close, exit the browser and reopen it without restoring the suspicious page.
- Ignore unsolicited support calls. Apple advises hanging up on unexpected calls claiming to be Apple Support. If you need to contact a company, use a known, trusted channel instead of details supplied by the caller or pop-up.

How to check an Apple threat notification
Apple says genuine threat notifications are for people who may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware; the vast majority of users will never be targeted by such attacks. This is not the same as a warning embedded in an ordinary Safari page.
Check for the notification on your iPhone Lock Screen or in Settings. Apple also says a banner appears at the top of your Apple Account page after you sign in at account.apple.com. Type the address yourself or use a trusted bookmark rather than following a link in an unexpected message.
Apple says its threat notifications never ask you by email or phone to click links, open files, install apps or profiles, or provide an Apple Account password or verification code. If you do receive a genuine notification, Apple recommends seeking expert assistance, including the Access Now Digital Security Helpline, and following its advice, which may include enabling Lockdown Mode. What to do if iOS names an app as malware
A system alert naming a third-party app is different from a browser pop-up. Apple says iPhone and iPad regularly check installed third-party apps for malware it identifies. If an app triggers this alert, the device prevents it from opening and recommends deletion; Apple warns that using it may harm the device or compromise privacy.
- Choose Delete App in the alert, if that option is shown; or
- Open Settings, select the named app, review the alert information, and delete the app.

If you already responded to a scam
You entered your Apple Account password or personal details
Change your Apple Account password immediately and make sure two-factor authentication is enabled. If someone claiming to provide support requested information, money, or a verification code, contact the relevant company directly through a channel you already trust.
You subscribed to unwanted Calendar events
Apple says suspicious invitations received in Mail or Calendar can be reported as Junk in iCloud. If you accidentally added a spam calendar subscription, delete that subscription.

You received a suspicious text message
Apple’s scam guidance describes reporting options, but the available route depends on your country and carrier. Use the reporting method that applies where you live rather than assuming one procedure works everywhere. Apple calls keeping software up to date the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of Apple products. To check for an update available for your model, open Settings > General > Software Update. Update availability varies by device, so check the iPhone itself rather than assuming a particular release applies to every model.

Apple’s web-attack guidance, published April 2, 2026, says updated devices running iOS 15 through iOS 26 are protected against the attacks it discusses and provides separate guidance for older devices. It also says Safari’s Apple Safe Browsing feature is on by default and blocks URL domains identified in those attacks. This protection does not make every online threat impossible, and a browser pop-up alone does not prove that an iPhone is infected. Apple’s iOS 26.7 security page lists a release date of September 14, 2026 and availability for iPhone 11 and later, with fixes including issues in WebKit and other system components. These security fixes address vulnerabilities; they are not evidence that a particular pop-up means your phone has malware. Read Apple’s iOS 26.7 security-content page.
Other steps Apple recommends include using a passcode or biometric authentication, securing your Apple Account with a strong password and two-factor authentication, turning on Stolen Device Protection, installing apps from the App Store, using unique passwords or passkeys, and avoiding unknown links and attachments. None of these measures requires buying a cleaner or antivirus app to dismiss a scam page.
