An iPhone update can take a long time because it has several stages: checking for the update, downloading it, preparing the files, and installing them. A slow download usually points to the update’s size or internet speed; a slow or apparently motionless progress bar may still be part of a normal installation. Apple does not give one time limit that determines when every update is stuck.
Start by checking what the screen says. That tells you whether to troubleshoot Wi-Fi and storage or leave the phone powered on while installation finishes.
Which part of the update is taking so long?
An update is not a single action. Apple describes a sequence of detecting an update, downloading it, preparing it, and installing it. A wireless update downloads only the components needed to complete that update. Apple’s update guide explains the process.

- Preparing Update: The iPhone is getting the downloaded files ready to install.
- Installing or an Apple logo with a progress bar: The phone is applying the update. Network speed is not the main thing to troubleshoot at this point.
Apple says an installation progress bar may move slowly or appear static, and its duration depends on the files and operation. A short period without visible movement is not, by itself, a reason to interrupt the update. Apple’s progress-bar guidance does not set a universal wait time.

If the update is downloading slowly
Apple says download time depends on update size and internet speed. It recommends using Wi-Fi and avoiding other simultaneous downloads. The iPhone can still be used while the update downloads. Apple’s troubleshooting steps do not promise a typical download duration.
- Connect the iPhone to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Pause other downloads or streaming that may compete for the connection.
- Let the download continue. If it cannot reach or verify the update, retry on the same network and then try another one.
If the iPhone says “Preparing Update” or the progress bar seems stuck
Keep the iPhone connected to power and give the process time to finish. Apple notes that a progress bar can appear static and, in some cases, can complete and start again. It does not specify a number of minutes after which a slow bar is definitely stuck. See Apple’s guidance for an iPhone that is stuck on the Apple logo.

If the update never completes or the iPhone becomes unresponsive, use Apple’s force-restart instructions for your specific iPhone model. If a progress-bar problem persists or returns, contact Apple Support.

Check compatibility and available storage
A wireless update can fail if the iPhone does not support that iOS version or does not have enough available storage. Check that the iPhone model is compatible with the version being offered, then open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to review available space. Apple says iOS may temporarily remove app data that can be downloaded again to make room.

- Offload unused apps or remove apps manually if you need more space.
- If the update has already downloaded but repeatedly fails, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select the update, and tap Delete Update. Then return to Settings > General > Software Update and download it again. Follow Apple’s current on-screen steps if the labels differ.
If the update cannot check, download, or verify
First retry on your current network, then try another network. If the same alert continues, update using a computer instead. Apple recommends backing up the iPhone before updating this way.

Follow Apple’s instructions for updating an iPhone with a computer. A computer update is an alternative route, not a guarantee that an update will finish faster.

When to use recovery mode
Recovery mode is for specific failure states, not the first response to a slow update. Apple identifies situations such as an Apple logo remaining for several minutes without a progress bar, a computer not recognizing the iPhone, or a screen that says to connect to a computer. Follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions if one of those applies.
If the computer offers Update or Restore and you have not tried Update, Apple says to try Update first. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone, so treat it as a consequential recovery step, not a routine troubleshooting option. A backup may help you recover data afterward, but it does not make Restore non-erasing.

Choosing the next step

Apple also supports automatic overnight installation when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. That can make a future update more convenient, but it does not fix an update that is already failing. See Apple’s iPhone update guide for its wireless and computer update options.
