To message a Samsung phone from an iPhone, open Messages and send a text to the recipient’s phone number. The conversation uses RCS when both phones, their messaging apps, and the carrier support it; otherwise, it uses SMS or MMS. Both RCS and SMS/MMS appear in green bubbles on iPhone, so color alone does not tell you which service is carrying the message.
How to send a message from an iPhone to a Samsung phone
-
Open Messages on your iPhone and start a new conversation or open an existing one.
-
Enter the Samsung user’s phone number, then write and send your message.

To use RCS features, check Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging and turn on RCS Messaging if the option is available. Apple requires iOS 18 or later and a cellular plan from a carrier that supports RCS messaging on iPhone. Apple’s RCS setup guidance notes that availability depends on the carrier and region.

Ask the Samsung user to check RCS in their messaging app. Google Messages supports RCS on Samsung devices, but availability and setup can depend on the device and carrier. Everyone in the conversation needs RCS enabled for the conversation to use it. See Google Messages’ RCS setup guidance and Google’s RCS FAQ.
-
If RCS is not available, use the conversation normally; SMS or MMS can carry the message where supported. Your mobile plan may charge for those messages.

What changes when the conversation uses RCS?
RCS is the richer messaging option when it is supported and enabled by both participants. Apple lists text messages, high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery receipts, read receipts, and typing indicators among iPhone RCS capabilities. Google also describes typing indicators and read receipts in one-to-one chats, group chat management, and high-resolution media. Specific features can vary by carrier, region, device, and conversation.
RCS messages on iPhone appear green, just like SMS and MMS. A green bubble confirms that the conversation is not using iMessage, but it does not identify whether the message was sent over RCS or SMS/MMS. Apple’s RCS messaging information explains the iPhone’s RCS support and availability.

Why messages may not arrive after moving your number to Samsung
If you moved your phone number from an iPhone to a Samsung phone and iPhone users’ messages are missing, your number may still be registered with iMessage. Deregister it so Apple devices can route messages to your new phone.

If you no longer have the old iPhone
Use Apple’s online process to deregister your phone number from iMessage. Apple says some senders’ devices may take a few hours to recognize the change. The full steps are in Apple’s guidance for deregistering iMessage.
Check the Samsung messaging setup
Google recommends checking that Google Messages is the default texting app, the carrier supports the message type, the phone has signal and connectivity, and the mobile plan is active. See Google Messages troubleshooting guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is iPhone-to-Samsung RCS end-to-end encrypted?
Do not assume it is. Google’s RCS FAQ says RCS conversations with iPhone users do not have end-to-end encryption. Apple’s support material separately describes an end-to-end encrypted RCS beta in iOS 26.5 rolling out with supported carriers. That announcement does not establish that the beta is active for a particular iPhone-to-Samsung conversation. Check the current carrier support and the encryption status shown for the specific conversation rather than inferring it from RCS availability or a green bubble.
