You can connect an iPhone to an Insignia TV wirelessly if that exact TV supports AirPlay, or use a compatible Digital AV adapter and an HDMI cable. The Insignia name—and even the Fire TV name—does not guarantee AirPlay support, so check your TV model before choosing a method.

First, check whether your Insignia TV supports AirPlay

AirPlay availability varies by model. Amazon documents an AirPlay connection path for supported Fire TV Smart TVs, but that does not mean every Insignia Fire TV has the feature. A Best Buy Q&A response attributed to Insignia Support says the 43-inch Insignia F30 does not natively support AirPlay; treat that as an example for that model, not as a statement about all Insignia TVs. Check your TV’s settings and documentation for AirPlay before trying to connect. See Amazon’s Fire TV AirPlay guidance and the Insignia F30 model Q&A.

Choose the connection that fits

Method What it does What you need Main constraint
AirPlay from an app Sends supported video or other app content to the TV An AirPlay-compatible TV or receiver and the same Wi-Fi network Some video apps do not support AirPlay. Apple
Screen Mirroring Shows the iPhone screen on the TV An AirPlay-compatible TV or receiver and the same Wi-Fi network Receiver support and app or content restrictions still apply. Apple
HDMI adapter Connects the iPhone to the TV by cable An adapter that matches the iPhone’s port, an HDMI cable, and an available TV HDMI input Adapter and protected-content compatibility can vary. Apple
External AirPlay receiver Adds an AirPlay destination through a device connected to the TV A compatible receiver connected to an HDMI input Requires additional hardware; it is unnecessary if the TV already supports AirPlay. Apple

Use AirPlay for supported video or screen mirroring

  1. Confirm that AirPlay is available and enabled on your exact Insignia TV or on an external receiver connected to it.
  2. Connect the iPhone and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network. Apple’s AirPlay instructions require them to share a network.
  3. For video in a supported app, start playback, tap the AirPlay control (sometimes found under a sharing control), and select the TV or receiver.
  4. To show the iPhone interface, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and select the TV or receiver. Enter the passcode shown on the TV if prompted.
  5. To end mirroring, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring.

Streaming from an app and mirroring are different routes: AirPlay from the app sends its supported content, while Screen Mirroring displays the phone’s screen. Neither route guarantees that every app or protected video will play; Apple notes that some video apps may not support AirPlay.

Connect with an HDMI adapter

A wired connection is an alternative when the TV lacks AirPlay or you prefer a cable. Match the adapter to the iPhone’s connector: USB-C and Lightning iPhones require different adapters. Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is specified for compatible USB-C devices and HDMI displays; Apple’s adapter guidance explains the connector-matching requirement.

  • Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
  1. Identify whether your iPhone has a USB-C or Lightning port.
  2. Connect a compatible Digital AV adapter to the iPhone, then connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an available HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Use the TV’s input/source control to select that HDMI input.
  4. If the screen stays blank or protected video does not play, check the cable and connections, confirm the selected input, and check whether the adapter and content support the required connection. Apple notes that some protected content requires an HDCP-compatible digital connection.

If the TV does not appear in AirPlay

Work through Apple’s general AirPlay troubleshooting checks:

  • Make sure the TV or receiver and iPhone are powered on, updated, near each other, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Restart both devices and try again.
  • Confirm that the TV is actually an AirPlay-compatible receiver; a Fire TV label alone does not establish support.
  • Check whether Home app settings are preventing AirPlay access.

If the TV remains unavailable and does not support AirPlay, connect by HDMI with an adapter matched to the iPhone’s port, or use a compatible external AirPlay receiver.

Why a video may not play even when connected

Some video apps do not offer AirPlay, and protected content may require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. A successful screen-mirroring connection therefore does not guarantee playback of every video. If a particular app’s video fails, try its own AirPlay control if available, check the app’s compatibility, or test another supported connection method. Apple describes these limits in its AirPlay guidance and digital adapter guidance.
