Apple calls iPhone’s nightstand-style display StandBy. To use it, enable StandBy in Settings, connect your iPhone to a charger, place it on its side in landscape orientation, keep it stationary, and press the side button. You can then choose a clock, photos, widgets, or a full-screen Live Activity, and adjust how the display behaves in a dark room.
Apple’s StandBy guide documents the setup and display options. The exact iPhone models with Always-On display are not listed on that page, so the behavior depends on your device.
How to turn on and use StandBy
- Open Settings and turn on StandBy.
- Connect your iPhone to a charger, then place it on its side in landscape orientation. Keep it stationary.
- Press the side button to activate StandBy.
- Swipe left or right to switch among the widget, photo, and clock views. Swipe up or down within a view to browse its available options.
Apple’s StandBy instructions give this fuller activation sequence. Its daily-routines guide also describes connecting the iPhone to power, laying it on its side in landscape orientation, and tapping the screen to use StandBy.

- Clock: Use the iPhone as a bedside clock.
- Photos: Display photos as a frame.
- Widgets: Glance at current information; some widget actions are available from StandBy. See Apple’s widget guide.
- Live Activities: View an activity full screen.
How the display behaves at night
With Night Mode enabled, StandBy adapts to low ambient light and gives displayed items a red tint. This is a change in the screen’s appearance; Apple’s guide does not establish sleep or health effects.

On iPhone models with Always-On display, StandBy can remain visible. On other models, wake it by tapping the screen, gently nudging the table, or asking Siri. Apple’s StandBy guide does not specify which exact iPhone models support Always-On display, so check your device’s specifications rather than relying on an assumed compatibility list.
Choose when the display turns off
Go to Settings > StandBy > Display. Apple lists three options:

- Automatically: The display turns off when iPhone is not in use and the room is dark.
- After 20 Seconds: The display turns off after 20 seconds.
- Never: The display stays on while StandBy is active.
These choices control the screen’s timing; they do not change the charging and stationary landscape setup needed to use StandBy.
Do you need a MagSafe charger or a stand?
No. Apple’s basic setup calls for a charger and a stationary landscape position, not a MagSafe charger or a particular stand. A stand may help hold the phone steady, but it is optional. Apple separately notes that StandBy remembers a preferred view at each MagSafe charging location; that convenience does not make MagSafe necessary.
