You can reduce spam-call interruptions on an iPhone by screening unsaved callers, silencing them, or enabling the carrier-powered Spam filter. These controls work differently, and none guarantees that every unwanted call will be caught.
Choose how your iPhone handles unsaved callers
On current iOS versions, open Settings > Apps > Phone and look under Screen Unknown Callers. Apple provides three choices: Ask Reason for Calling, Silence, and Never. The first two change how calls from numbers that are not saved in your Contacts reach you; they do not identify every such caller as spam. Apple Support: Screen and block calls on iPhone.
Ask Reason for Calling
Select this to have the iPhone ask an unsaved caller for their name and reason for calling before it rings. Apple says the phone then rings and shares the caller’s response, letting you decide whether to answer. This can be a useful middle ground if you need to hear from people who may not be in your Contacts, such as a school, clinic, delivery driver, or new client.
Silence
Select this to send calls from unsaved numbers to voicemail without ringing. It can reduce interruptions more aggressively, but a legitimate call from a number you have not saved may also go unanswered. Save important numbers in Contacts if you want them treated as known callers; Apple recommends adding important numbers before relying on this setting.

Select this to let unsaved callers ring normally. Use it if you do not want screening or silencing applied to unknown numbers.
Turn on the carrier’s Spam filter separately
The Spam call filter is distinct from screening or silencing all unsaved callers: it applies to calls your carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud. Apple says those calls are silenced and sent to voicemail when the filter is on. Because identification comes from the carrier, it is not a guarantee that every spam call will be recognized, and it does not work in the same way as the unknown-caller choices. In Settings > Apps > Phone, look under call filtering for Spam and turn it on if the option is available. If you do not see it, availability may depend on your carrier or iOS configuration. Review calls that were screened or silenced
Unknown callers’ missed calls and voicemails can be moved into an Unknown Callers list. If your carrier provides a Spam filter, you may also be able to review calls in a Spam list from the Phone app’s filter menu. On iOS 26 or later, the Phone app’s Unified layout has a Calls tab with filters; in the Classic layout, call history is under Recents. Know when screening may not apply
- Apple says unknown-caller screening does not operate while your iPhone is roaming.
- After you call emergency services, screening is turned off for 24 hours.
- Settings labels or filtering options can vary by iOS version and carrier. If a control is missing, check your Phone settings and your carrier’s support information.
These limits refer to the unknown-caller screening feature; they should not be read as a promise that every carrier Spam filter behaves identically. Apple Support: Manage unknown callers on iPhone.

Use Live Voicemail as another way to assess a call
Live Voicemail may show a real-time transcription of a caller’s message while they are leaving it, so you can decide whether to answer. It is separate from the unknown-caller and carrier Spam controls, and its availability varies by carrier, country or region, and language.
