If your iPhone feels slow after an update, first confirm which iOS version is installed: Apple’s update page lists iOS 26 updates, including iOS 26.6 changes to Spotlight indexing in preparation for iOS 27, while iOS 27 user guides are also available. That does not establish a specific iOS 27 performance defect. Check the version and symptoms, then work through the 25 checks below to distinguish device-wide lag from an app problem, slow internet, heat, or battery-related behavior. These are diagnostic steps and conditional fixes—not 25 guaranteed speed boosts.
Start by identifying what feels slow
Before changing settings, separate the symptom from its possible cause. A page that loads slowly only online points to a different issue than delayed taps, stuttering animations, or slow app launches that continue offline. Apple’s current update context can be checked on its About iOS 26 Updates page; verify your installed version rather than assuming the phone is running iOS 27.

- Check the installed version. Go to Settings > General > About and read the iOS version shown there.
- Classify the symptom. Note whether the whole phone lags, just one app is slow, online content takes a long time to load, the phone is hot, or battery life has changed.
- Look for a post-update insight. Open Settings > Battery and check for an update-related insight, if one appears on your device.
- Allow background work to finish. Apple says some tasks can continue after an update and affect battery life and thermal performance temporarily.
- Reassess after a few days. Apple advises waiting a few days before judging a battery-life decline noticed after an update. Compare the same kinds of tasks before and after that interval.
Apple’s guidance is to “wait a few days and then check again” if battery life seems worse after updating. See If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck available storage
Low storage can contribute to slow performance. Apple’s guidance is to maintain at least 1 GB of free space to avoid slowdowns; Apple Support does not show a publication year for that figure. Check actual available space before deleting anything.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Open iPhone Storage. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Check free space. Compare available storage with Apple’s at-least-1-GB guidance.
- Review the recommendations. Read the storage suggestions displayed on the iPhone and decide which, if any, suit your use.
- Offload an app if you want to retain its documents and data. Offloading removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data on the device.
- Delete only with data in mind. Deleting an app may also remove related data. Do so only if you are comfortable with that loss or have confirmed the data is backed up.
Apple’s storage and slowdown guidance is in If your iPhone or iPad is running slow.
Check battery and power settings
Battery usage can reveal whether a particular app or background task is consuming activity. Apple’s examples of background activity include photo syncing, mail fetching, directions, music playback, and notifications. Use the battery screen to investigate what is happening rather than assuming that a battery change means the battery itself needs replacement.

- Review daily battery usage. Open Settings > Battery and inspect the usage details for the days when the slowdown occurs.
- Look for unusual background activity. Check whether an app or system task shows activity that fits the timing of the problem.
- Check Battery Health. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health or the corresponding Battery Health screen available on your model, and follow any service recommendation shown.
- Check Low Power Mode. In Settings > Battery, see whether Low Power Mode is enabled. Apple notes that some features work more slowly in this mode.
- Compare with Low Power Mode off, if appropriate. If performance matters more than conserving power at that moment, turn it off and compare the same task. Restore it if you want to prioritize battery saving.
- Understand Adaptive Power on supported models. Apple says Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments and limit background activity. Check Apple’s Power Modes guidance for model and feature details.
For help interpreting app and system activity, consult Apple’s iPhone battery usage and health guide. A service recommendation is a reason to seek service advice, not proof that every slow iPhone needs a replacement battery.

Very hot or cold conditions can affect how an iPhone performs. And when only online tasks are slow, the network may be the bottleneck rather than the phone’s processor or iOS.

- Let temperature normalize. If the iPhone is very hot or cold, move it to a more moderate environment and allow it to return to normal conditions before comparing performance.
- Retry online tasks on stable Wi-Fi. If websites, streaming, or other connected services are slow, compare them on a stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Compare cellular service in another location. If cellular tasks are slow, try again elsewhere. If the issue persists across locations, contact your carrier.
- Test an offline task. Compare an action that does not rely on internet access with the slow online task. If offline interaction is responsive, focus on the connection; if it also lags, continue checking the phone itself.
Apple lists network conditions and very hot or cold conditions among checks for a slow device in its slow iPhone guidance.
Recover an unresponsive app without routine force-closing
If one app is stuck, start with that app. Swiping away every app is not a reliable speed-up routine: Apple warns that unnecessary force-closing can slow the device because apps take longer to reload.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
- Quit and reopen the affected app. Use the app switcher to close only the app that is unresponsive, then open it again. The exact gesture for opening the app switcher depends on the iPhone model.
- Leave other apps alone unless they are misbehaving. Routine force-closing is not recommended as a general performance fix.
- Restart if the app remains unresponsive. Apple recommends restarting the iPhone if quitting and reopening does not resolve the app problem.
- Check whether the issue is isolated. Note whether the same app is the only one affected or whether sluggishness appears across the system, including offline.
- Escalate persistent device-wide problems. If the supported checks do not resolve ongoing slowness, contact Apple Support or seek service diagnostics instead of relying on hidden settings, cleaner utilities, or accessories.
Apple’s instructions for quitting and reopening an app explain the recovery step. Apple’s warning about force-closing and its other checks are in If your iPhone or iPad is running slow.
How to use the 25 checks
Change or investigate one thing at a time, then repeat the task that originally felt slow. Keep a short note of the iOS version, symptom, time, and result; that makes it easier to tell a one-app issue from a network or device-wide problem. If one check identifies a plausible cause, address that cause before moving on. If nothing changes and the problem persists, Apple Support or service diagnostics are the sensible next step.
