Use Send Later in the iPhone Messages app when you want an iMessage delivered at a chosen future time. Open a conversation, tap Add, choose Send Later, set the time, write the message, and tap Send. Apple currently documents scheduling up to 14 days ahead. If your real concern is noticing an incoming message while Focus is active, that is a separate, recipient-controlled task: Focus allowances, contact-level Emergency Bypass, and notification settings determine whether an alert appears.
The sender cannot force another person’s iPhone to interrupt Focus. Scheduling controls when your outgoing message is sent; Focus controls how the recipient’s device presents incoming notifications.
Two different problems: scheduling delivery and getting an alert
“Send this later” and “make sure I notice this now” are easy to confuse because both involve time-sensitive communication. They work in opposite directions and are controlled by different people.
| Need | Feature | Who controls it | What it changes | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delay an outgoing message | Send Later in Messages | The sender | Queues an iMessage for a selected delivery time | Apple’s guide states a maximum of 14 days ahead |
| Make an incoming message more noticeable | Focus, notification settings, and Emergency Bypass | The recipient | Determines whether the recipient’s iPhone alerts, silences, or filters the message | The sender cannot override another person’s settings |
Apple’s feature availability can vary by carrier, country, or region, so the labels or options you see may not exactly match the examples below. The current Messages feature overview is in Apple’s iPhone Messages guide.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
A useful way to think about the difference is “queue versus permission.” Send Later puts your message in a queue that you control. Focus is a permission list on the receiving device. A queued message can leave at the intended time even if the recipient is busy, but only the recipient’s settings determine whether the phone makes that arrival prominent.
How to schedule an iMessage on iPhone
Before you start
- Use the Messages app on an iPhone with the Send Later option available.
- The conversation must use iMessage. Apple’s support guide states, “You must be using iMessage.” A blue send button normally indicates iMessage; a green conversation may be SMS or another supported carrier message type and will not provide this scheduling workflow.
- Choose a time within the documented 14-day window.
- Keep in mind that changing or cancelling a scheduled message later requires the sender to be online.
You do not need to install a separate scheduling app for the documented workflow. The control is part of Messages itself. Start with the actual conversation you intend to use, because the queued bubble remains in that thread and its dashed outline is the easiest way to verify that you selected the right recipient.
Schedule the message
- Open Messages.
- Select an existing conversation, or tap the compose button to start one.
- Tap the Add button next to the text field.
- Tap Send Later.
- Tap the displayed time and select the date and time you want.
- Type your message. You can compose it after selecting the delivery time.
- Tap Send.
Apple documents this exact process in Schedule a text message on iPhone to send later. After you submit it, Messages shows the queued bubble with a dashed outline and the scheduled time. That visual marker is your confirmation that the message is waiting rather than already delivered.

What the recipient sees
The recipient can use any device that receives the conversation, and Apple says the recipient is not told that you scheduled the message. To them, it arrives like a normally sent iMessage at delivery time. The message is encrypted and stored on Apple servers only until it is sent; Apple says it is removed from those servers after sending.
There is no special “scheduled” label on the recipient’s side and no requirement that the recipient own an iPhone. The important qualification is that the conversation must be an iMessage conversation on the sender’s side for Send Later to be available.
Edit, reschedule, send immediately, or cancel
You can change a queued message until its scheduled delivery time. All of these actions start from the conversation containing the dashed scheduled bubble.
Edit the wording
- Touch and hold the scheduled message bubble.
- Choose the edit option, revise the text, and confirm the change.
The sender must be online for this change. If the phone has no connection, Messages cannot update the queued item.

Change the delivery time
- Open the conversation.
- Tap Edit beside the date shown above the scheduled message.
- Choose Edit Time.
- Select the new date and time and confirm.
Rescheduling is useful when a meeting moves or the recipient’s availability changes. Make the adjustment before the original delivery time and verify that the new date and time appear above the dashed bubble.
Send it now
- Tap Edit beside the scheduled date.
- Choose Send Message.
This bypasses the remaining wait and sends the message immediately, subject to the normal iMessage connection and delivery conditions.
Cancel delivery
Touch and hold the scheduled bubble and delete it before the scheduled time. Deleting the queued item cancels its delivery. Cancellation also requires the sender to be online, according to Apple’s instructions.

These controls apply only while the message is queued. Once it has been sent, it is no longer a scheduled item that can be edited through this workflow. If you are unsure whether a change took effect, return to the thread and look for the updated text, date, or the disappearance of the dashed bubble.
What happens if your iPhone is offline?
Apple says a scheduled message can be delivered even when all of the sender’s devices are offline at the scheduled time. That describes Apple’s handling of the queued message; it is not a universal promise that every recipient will receive or notice it at an exact instant. Network outages, service interruptions, an unavailable recipient, or other delivery conditions can still affect when a conversation updates.
The offline qualification applies to delivery of the already queued message. Editing, deleting, or rescheduling is different: those changes require the sender to be online before the scheduled time.
Plan accordingly for a message that is safety-critical, depends on a rapidly changing fact, or must be acknowledged at a precise moment. Send Later is a convenience for timing an iMessage, not a replacement for a live call or an agreed emergency channel.
Limits you should understand
It is an iMessage workflow
Send Later is documented for iMessage. Do not assume that a green-bubble SMS or another carrier message can be queued through the same control. If Send Later does not appear, first check whether the conversation is actually using iMessage and whether Messages features are available for your carrier and region.

The maximum is 14 days
Apple’s current user guide specifies scheduling up to 14 days into the future. This is a product limit, not a recommendation to schedule that far ahead. For a date beyond the limit, create a reminder or calendar event and schedule the message when it enters the allowed window.
Delivery is not the same as attention
Scheduling determines when your message leaves the queue. It cannot ensure that the recipient is awake, looking at the phone, connected, or willing to respond. Their Focus and notification choices remain in control of what happens after delivery.
Availability can change
Apple notes that Messages features may differ by carrier, country, or region. Interface labels can also change with iOS releases. If your screen differs, look for the Add menu in the compose field and consult the current Apple guide rather than relying on an older screenshot.

The 14-day figure describes how far ahead Apple lets you queue the message. It does not promise that the recipient’s conversation will refresh at that exact second or that an alert will be audible. Treat the selected time as the intended send time and allow for ordinary service and network conditions.
How to make an incoming message more noticeable
There is no sender-side switch that forces an alert on someone else’s iPhone. The recipient must configure their own notifications. These are the main controls.
Allow people or apps in Focus
Focus modes, including Do Not Disturb, can silence notifications except for people or apps the recipient explicitly allows. On the recipient’s iPhone, the relevant controls are in the Focus settings, where they can choose allowed people and allowed apps. Apple’s instructions are in Turn on or schedule a Focus on iPhone.
To make a conversation more likely to alert during a particular Focus, the recipient can add the important contact to that Focus’s allowed people or allow Messages as an app. The exact screen can vary with iOS version and the type of Focus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAllowing Messages as an app is broader than allowing one person: it can affect other conversations too. A recipient who wants fewer interruptions should consider whether a contact-specific allowance is sufficient before permitting the entire Messages app.

Use Emergency Bypass for a trusted contact
Emergency Bypass is assigned per contact, not activated by the person sending the message. In Contacts, open the person’s card, tap Edit, and choose either Ringtone or Text Tone. Enable Emergency Bypass for the tone you want to be allowed through. Apple describes this setting as allowing that contact’s sound to override Focus. The recipient should use it sparingly because it is intended for genuinely important contacts.
Apple’s notification guidance, Stop, mute, and change message notifications on iPhone, explains the available controls. Emergency Bypass changes the recipient’s alert behavior; it does not change message delivery, guarantee a response, or give the sender control over the setting.
Share Focus status and use “notify anyway” carefully
When Focus status is shared, a sender may see that the recipient has silenced notifications. In supported conversations, the sender may be offered a way to indicate that a message is urgent. This is still a recipient-controlled notification feature, not a guaranteed bypass. The recipient’s settings and device state determine whether an audible, haptic, or visible alert actually appears.

If an important verification code or request comes from a number that is not saved in Contacts, the recipient should review the unknown-sender notification controls. Apple documents a Time Sensitive notification category under Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders > Allow Notifications. The exact labels and availability can vary by iOS version or region. See Screen and filter text messages on iPhone for Apple’s current instructions.
Filtering is a separate issue from Focus. A recipient can have Messages allowed in a Focus and still miss a text from an unknown sender if unknown-sender notifications are restricted. For time-sensitive codes, saving trusted contacts and checking this setting in advance is more reliable than assuming an urgent label will defeat every filter.
A practical decision guide
You are the sender and want a message to arrive later
- Confirm that the conversation is an iMessage conversation.
- Use Add > Send Later and select a time no more than 14 days away.
- Check the dashed outline and scheduled time in the thread.
- Stay online if you later need to edit, reschedule, send immediately, or cancel.
You are the recipient and cannot miss a message from one person
- Decide whether the person should be allowed during every Focus or only a specific Focus.
- Add the person under the Focus’s allowed people, or allow Messages as an app.
- For a true emergency contact, enable Emergency Bypass for the contact’s Text Tone.
- If the sender is unknown, review the Unknown Senders notification setting and its Time Sensitive option.
You need a response, not merely delivery
Schedule the message for a time when the recipient is likely to be available, then state the desired response and deadline clearly. No Messages setting can compel the recipient to read or answer it.
You are coordinating across time zones
Confirm the intended local time with the recipient before scheduling. The queued time is selected on the sender’s iPhone, while the recipient may be traveling or using a device configured differently. If timing matters, include the date and expected local time in the message itself so the recipient has context when it arrives.

You are planning a message more than two weeks out
Because the documented window is 14 days, use a calendar or reminder as a holding step. When the reminder arrives inside the allowed window, return to Messages and create the scheduled iMessage. This avoids relying on an unsupported long-range queue.

Troubleshooting common problems
“Send Later” is missing
- Check whether the thread is using iMessage rather than a green-bubble message.
- Open the Add menu beside the text field; the control is not a separate app icon.
- Verify that your iPhone’s software and region support the feature, since Apple says availability can vary by carrier, country, or region.
- If the interface has changed after an update, compare it with Apple’s current scheduling guide.
The selected time is outside the allowed range
- Move the date to within 14 days of the current date.
- For a later event, set a reminder to schedule the message when it becomes eligible.
- Check the date and time picker carefully before tapping Send.
The scheduled message did not change when you edited it
- Confirm that the sender’s iPhone is online while making the edit.
- Reopen the conversation and check the dashed bubble and displayed time.
- Make changes before the scheduled time; once the message is sent, it is no longer a queued item.
The recipient says they never noticed it
- Separate delivery from notification: the message may be in the conversation even if no alert sounded.
- Ask the recipient to check the active Focus, allowed people and apps, and whether the conversation is muted.
- For an unknown sender, review filtering and Time Sensitive notification settings.
- Do not treat an urgent indication or Emergency Bypass as proof that an alert was displayed.
The message arrived at an unexpected time
- Check the scheduled date, time, and the iPhone’s time-zone or clock settings.
- Remember that the 14-day limit concerns how far ahead the message can be queued, not a guarantee of second-by-second delivery.
- Consider network or service conditions if the recipient reports a delay.
You cannot cancel a queued message
- Reconnect the sender’s iPhone to the internet; Apple requires the sender to be online for deletion and rescheduling.
- Return to the same conversation and touch and hold the dashed scheduled bubble.
- If the scheduled time has passed, treat the message as sent rather than queued.
Privacy and security considerations
Scheduled messages are not visible to the recipient as scheduled messages. Apple says they are encrypted and retained on Apple servers only until delivery, after which they are removed from Apple servers. Avoid putting passwords, one-time codes, or other secrets into a scheduled message if someone else could access the sender’s unlocked device or account before the send time.
Because the recipient controls notification presentation, do not use scheduling as a substitute for an emergency channel. For immediate danger or a safety-critical situation, use the appropriate emergency service or an already agreed-upon contact method rather than relying on an iMessage alert.
Key takeaways
- Use Messages’ Add > Send Later control to queue an iMessage for a chosen time.
- Apple’s current guide sets the scheduling window at up to 14 days.
- Before delivery, a scheduled bubble can be edited, rescheduled, sent immediately, or deleted; those changes require the sender to be online.
- Apple says queued messages can send while all of the sender’s devices are offline, but that is not a universal guarantee of instant receipt or attention.
- Focus, Emergency Bypass, and unknown-sender notification settings belong to the recipient. The sender cannot force another person’s iPhone to alert.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule an SMS or RCS message with Send Later?
Apple’s documented workflow requires iMessage. If the conversation is a green-bubble SMS or another carrier message, Send Later may not appear; do not assume the same scheduling control supports it.
Recommended Free Tools
Will the recipient know that I scheduled the iMessage?
No. Apple says the recipient is not told that the message was scheduled. It arrives as a normal iMessage at delivery time, although ordinary network or device conditions can affect when it appears.
Can I edit or cancel a scheduled message?
Yes, before its delivery time. Touch and hold the scheduled bubble to edit or delete it, use Edit beside the scheduled date to change the time, or choose Send Message to send it immediately. The sender must be online for these changes.
What is the longest time I can schedule ahead?
Apple’s current iPhone guide specifies up to 14 days into the future. For a later date, use a reminder or calendar event and schedule the message once it falls inside that window.
Will Send Later work if my iPhone is offline?
Apple says a queued message can be delivered even when all of the sender’s devices are offline at the scheduled time. This is not a universal promise of exact-time receipt or an alert. Editing, deleting, and rescheduling still require the sender to be online.
Can I force someone else’s iPhone to alert during Focus?
No. The recipient controls Focus allowances, notification filters, and Emergency Bypass. A sender may be offered a way to indicate urgency when Focus status is shared, but that does not guarantee an audible, haptic, or visible alert.
How does Emergency Bypass affect messages?
The recipient assigns Emergency Bypass to a contact’s Ringtone or Text Tone in Contacts. It can allow that contact’s sound to override Focus, but it does not change delivery, guarantee a response, or give the sender control over the setting.
What should I check if an unknown sender’s urgent text is missed?
The recipient should review Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders > Allow Notifications and its Time Sensitive option. Labels and availability vary by iOS version and region, and filtering remains separate from Focus.
The Bottom Line
Use Messages > Add > Send Later to queue an iMessage for a time up to 14 days ahead. You can edit, reschedule, send immediately, or delete it before delivery while online. If the goal is to make an incoming message stand out, only the recipient’s Focus, Emergency Bypass, and notification settings can control that alert; no sender-side feature guarantees attention.
