Secure the iPhone first, then secure the wallet’s own keys. A current iOS release, strong passcode, biometrics, Stolen Device Protection, Find My, and Apple Account two-factor authentication reduce the chance that someone who steals your phone can take over the device or account. They do not protect a recovery phrase that you have revealed, and they cannot reverse an approved blockchain transaction. The wallet’s backup and key-custody design still determines what you must protect.
Start with this pre-wallet checklist
Review these controls before installing a wallet. Menu names can vary by iOS version and iPhone model, so confirm the labels on your own device.
| Control | Where to review it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| iOS updates | Settings > General > Software Update |
Install the current update offered for your iPhone. |
| Passcode and biometrics | Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode |
Use a strong, unique passcode and enable Face ID or Touch ID. |
| Stolen Device Protection | Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection |
Turn it on before the phone is lost; consider the Always setting. |
| Find My | Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone |
Confirm Find My and the required location services are enabled. |
| Apple Account | Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security |
Use a unique password and two-factor authentication. |
| Wallet-app lock | Inside the wallet’s security settings; optionally iOS app locking | Require Face ID or Touch ID whenever the wallet supports it. |
| App installation | App Store listing | Check the exact publisher, app identity, reviews and update history before installing. |
| Safety Check | Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check |
Review sharing and account access if other people use the phone or accounts. |
Why iPhone security and wallet security are different
Your iPhone protects the operating system, local data and Apple Account session. A crypto wallet controls signing keys or access credentials according to its own design. A phone can be well secured while a recovery phrase is exposed in a screenshot, cloud folder, message or fake support chat. Conversely, a carefully backed-up wallet can still be put at risk if an attacker obtains an unlocked phone and can approve transactions.

Apple’s protections do not store, recover or insure a self-custody recovery phrase. Apple Account two-factor authentication protects Apple services; it is not a second factor for every wallet. Apple Wallet payment-card protections are also not equivalent to the controls of a third-party cryptocurrency wallet. Treat the two layers as separate checklists.

Install every available iOS security update
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the current release offered for your model. Apple advises current software because updates include security fixes. Do not rely on a remembered version number: availability depends on the iPhone model, region and release date.
After updating, revisit security settings because an iOS upgrade can add, rename or relocate options. If a wallet requires a minimum iOS version, meet that requirement before importing an account or approving a transaction. Avoid installing a wallet on a phone that can no longer receive security updates unless you understand the resulting exposure and the wallet provider explicitly supports that environment.
Use a strong passcode and biometric unlock
Set a passcode that is not reused for email, banking or any other service. A longer passcode is harder to guess than a short one, and the device passcode enables iPhone Data Protection. Enable Face ID or Touch ID so routine access does not require repeatedly typing the code in public.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBiometrics are a convenience and an additional gate, not a replacement for the passcode. Memorize the passcode and never tell it to a wallet support contact, friend or person claiming to be an Apple representative. iOS can require the passcode in situations such as a restart or after several failed biometric attempts, so its secrecy still matters.
Do not share the device passcode with someone who might handle the phone while it is unlocked. If another person needs access, use the least-privileged arrangement possible rather than giving them permanent access to the primary device.
Turn on Stolen Device Protection before you need it
Stolen Device Protection is available on iOS 17.3 or later. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode), authenticate, and select Stolen Device Protection. Enable it while you still have the phone; Apple says it must be turned on before loss or theft.
What the feature changes
When the iPhone is away from familiar locations, selected sensitive actions require biometric authentication without a passcode fallback. For some especially sensitive changes, iOS imposes a security delay of about one hour and then requires another biometric check. This is intended to stop a thief who has observed or coerced your passcode from immediately changing account or device protections.
The feature does not freeze a wallet’s blockchain keys and does not judge whether a transaction is legitimate. It raises the cost of taking over the phone and related settings. A thief who already knows your recovery phrase can still restore the wallet elsewhere, which is why phrase handling remains separate.

Choose the scope that fits your risk
Apple provides an Always option that applies the additional protections even when the phone believes it is in a familiar location. Selecting it can be sensible if you frequently work in public places or do not want location familiarity to reduce the checks. The default behavior is designed to be less disruptive at places such as home or work. Read the on-screen explanation and choose deliberately.
Requirements and common setup failures
Stolen Device Protection depends on a device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Find My and location settings. If the switch is unavailable, check those prerequisites and confirm that the iPhone meets the iOS 17.3-or-later requirement. Because labels and eligibility can change, use the current text shown in your settings rather than an older screenshot or guide.
Keep Find My and location services ready
Open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone and confirm Find My is enabled. It supports locating the device and marking it as lost. Find My is also a prerequisite for Stolen Device Protection, and Apple says it cannot be turned off while that protection is enabled.
Review the location settings required by Stolen Device Protection instead of disabling location access globally. If you turn off a prerequisite, the feature may not work as expected. Find My is a recovery aid for the phone itself; it does not locate a wallet address or retrieve a lost recovery phrase.
Harden the Apple Account separately
Use a strong, unique Apple Account password and enable two-factor authentication. This protects iCloud and other Apple services connected to the phone, including the account used by Find My. It does not replace the wallet’s recovery phrase, PIN, passkey or other wallet-specific backup.
Be suspicious of messages claiming that Apple, a wallet company or an exchange needs you to “verify” an account. Do not type your Apple Account password, one-time code or wallet recovery phrase into a link supplied by an unsolicited message. Navigate to the service through its known app or manually entered official address instead.
Lock the wallet app and verify what you install
Use the wallet’s own biometric lock
Many wallet apps offer a security option that requires Face ID or Touch ID whenever the app opens or performs a sensitive action. Turn it on if the app supports it, and check whether the lock covers viewing balances, exporting keys and signing transactions or only opening the app. Behavior differs between wallets and iOS versions.

iOS app locking can add another layer where available. Apple notes that a locked app works with Stolen Device Protection to require biometric protection when the iPhone is away from familiar locations. Test the result with a small, non-critical action before funding the wallet so you know which prompts appear.

Install only the authentic app
Use the App Store and inspect the publisher name, icon, description, supported networks and update history. Imitation wallet apps can look convincing and may ask for a recovery phrase during setup. A legitimate app should not require you to surrender a phrase to “activate” an account or release a transfer.
Download updates through the App Store or the wallet’s documented in-app process. Do not install a configuration profile, remote-management tool or unrequested keyboard merely because a message says it is needed for support.
Adopt phishing-resistant habits
- Ignore unsolicited wallet-support links, attachments and direct messages.
- Type the known service address yourself or open the official app; do not trust a search ad or a shortened link for a high-value action.
- Check the network, destination address and amount on the wallet’s confirmation screen before signing.
- Never approve a transaction merely to “cancel,” “verify,” or “synchronize” a wallet.
- Assume that anyone requesting a recovery phrase is trying to take control of the wallet.
Biometric app locks cannot tell whether a transaction is deceptive. They only help decide who can operate the app. Social engineering can therefore bypass a technically secure phone if you willingly approve a malicious request.

Protect the recovery phrase according to the wallet design
A recovery phrase is a credential that can restore wallet access. Do not disclose it to a person, website, form, search field or supposed support chat. Apple cannot recover a self-custody phrase, and a wallet support agent should not ask you to send it.
Software-wallet instructions are wallet-specific
Coinbase’s Wallet instructions describe a 12-word recovery phrase, warn users not to share it, and advise against taking a screenshot or recording it. Those are Coinbase-specific operational instructions, not a promise that every wallet uses 12 words or offers the same backup choices. Coinbase describes encrypted cloud backup and a manual backup option; read the exact prompts in the version of the wallet you install and decide which method matches your threat model.
If a wallet offers cloud backup, understand what is encrypted, which account unlocks it and whether the backup can be restored on another device. A cloud backup protected by a weak account password is not equivalent to offline storage. If you choose manual backup, write the words exactly in the wallet’s order and verify them using the wallet’s built-in check without photographing them.
Hardware-wallet recovery is a separate workflow
A hardware wallet keeps signing operations on a separate device rather than relying entirely on the iPhone. Ledger’s guidance says its recovery phrase should stay off internet-connected devices and should never be entered into a phone or computer. Anyone who obtains that phrase can restore access, so the separate device does not make careless phrase handling safe.
Hardware wallets still require you to verify addresses, approve transactions and resist phishing. They can be damaged, lost or used incorrectly. Choose one only if its supported assets, networks, iPhone connection method and recovery process fit your needs; it is not a universal requirement for every wallet user.

Consider durable physical storage only when you self-custody
A metal seed-phrase backup plate can protect a written phrase from hazards such as fire, water and corrosion. It is relevant to people managing a self-custody phrase, not to every custodial, passkey-based or cloud-managed account. Store the backup where unauthorized people cannot reach it, and do not place the plate beside the hardware wallet or in an obvious location that reveals its purpose.

| Question | Mobile software wallet | Hardware wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Where signing keys are used | On the iPhone or within its wallet software, according to that wallet’s design. | On a separate physical device designed to keep signing operations apart from the phone. |
| Primary backup to protect | The wallet’s recovery phrase, encrypted backup or other documented recovery credential. | The device’s recovery phrase, plus the physical device and its unlock method. |
| iPhone interaction | Directly through the app. | Through the wallet’s supported connection method; compatibility varies. |
| Main user risks | Malicious apps, phishing, an unlocked phone and accidental transaction approval. | Phrase theft, fake support, physical loss, incorrect address verification and user error. |
| Recovery trade-off | Convenient restoration may involve cloud or manual backup choices defined by the provider. | Offline phrase handling can reduce online exposure but makes secure physical storage and careful recovery essential. |
Neither approach eliminates the need to verify an address and reject unsolicited instructions. Compare the specific wallet’s supported assets and networks before moving funds.
Use Safety Check when sharing or account access is complicated
On iOS 16 or later, Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check can help review who has access to shared information, apps and account connections. It is particularly useful if a partner, family member, former housemate or employer has had access to the device or Apple Account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Safety Check is not a wallet-key backup tool. Use it to identify unwanted sharing or account access, then review the wallet separately. Removing an Apple sharing permission does not invalidate a recovery phrase that someone has already copied.
Reserve Lockdown Mode for an exceptional threat
Lockdown Mode is intended for people who have a specific reason to believe they may be targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, such as mercenary spyware. Apple states: “Most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature.” The mode limits some normal features, so it is not a routine setting that every crypto user needs.
If your circumstances justify it, read Apple’s current explanation of the restrictions before enabling it and confirm that the apps and communication methods you rely on still work. Lockdown Mode does not replace a wallet’s recovery controls or make a deceptive transaction safe.
If the iPhone is lost or stolen
- Use Find My from another trusted device or service to locate the iPhone or mark it as lost.
- Do not share the passcode, Apple Account password, verification code or wallet recovery phrase with anyone who contacts you about the incident.
- Secure the Apple Account through its normal account-recovery and device-management controls, using a trusted device rather than a link in a message.
- Review the wallet provider’s documented response for a lost phone. If a recovery phrase may have been exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and follow that wallet’s verified recovery procedure; never send the phrase to support.
Stolen Device Protection helps only if it was enabled beforehand and its prerequisites remain active. It cannot undo a phrase disclosure or an already signed transfer.
