A white line on an iPhone screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It may be caused by an app or iOS issue, a display connection or cable, a faulty screen, or a logic-board problem. Restart the iPhone and check whether the line appears in more than one app; if it remains on the Home Screen or across apps, arrange a professional inspection rather than relying on a reset to repair possible hardware damage.
What a white line can mean
The appearance of the line alone cannot identify the failed component. Possible causes include a temporary app or iOS problem, a loose or damaged display connection or cable, a faulty display, or a logic-board fault. A hardware problem can exist even when the glass has no obvious crack. iFixit’s troubleshooting guidance describes these possibilities, but determining which one applies requires diagnosis.
Note whether the line is vertical or horizontal, when it appears, and whether it started after an update, drop, liquid exposure, or repair. These details can help a technician, but they do not establish the cause.
What to check before arranging service
- Check where the line appears. See whether it is confined to one app or also visible in other apps and on the Home Screen. A symptom limited to one app points to a different first check than a line visible throughout iOS.
- Restart the iPhone. A restart is a reasonable initial check for a temporary software issue.
- If it is app-specific, address the app. Close and update that app, then check again.
- If it appears in multiple apps or on the Home Screen, check for an iOS update. An update may help with a software issue, but it cannot be relied on to repair a damaged display or connection.
- Consider a recently installed accessory. If the line appeared after fitting a screen protector or adding another accessory, inspect for trapped debris or an optical artifact. iFixit suggests checking whether the line remains visible when the screen is off; this can help assess whether what you see may be an external visual effect.
Do not press, heat, bend, or open the phone to try to remove the line. The available guidance does not establish these as safe fixes.

When a reset is unlikely to help
A factory reset is not a first-line fix when a line persists across apps or appears on the Home Screen. iFixit notes that resetting is unlikely to resolve the problem, although it may help rule out software as a cause. If you choose that diagnostic step, back up important data first. A reset should not substitute for inspection when the symptom suggests a display, connection, or board fault.
When to seek professional inspection
Arrange an inspection if the line persists after basic checks, began after impact, liquid exposure, or repair, or appears alongside flicker, touch failure, dark areas, or worsening display behavior. A technician can assess whether the problem is in the panel, its connection or cable, or the logic board. Back up important data before service.

Check display repair status after service
On iPhone 11 and later, except iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), go to Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. On supported models, it can show display repair status. Apple says an iPhone 15 or later running iOS 18 or later may show “Used” for a previously used display; a newly installed Apple display may show “Finish Repair” until Repair Assistant completes its procedure. These labels and features depend on model and software version.
Apple warns that non-genuine displays may affect touch response, color, brightness, sensors, or battery behavior. Ask the repair provider what parts and repair process will be used, and what coverage applies to the work.

Don't insert pick over 3 mm, and don't insert your pick in left edge, as may damage internal components. Remove the screw securing the display connector bracket and disconnect the front sensor cable. Connect the new screen cable and please carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks into place. Do not press down on the middle. If the connector is misaligned, causing permanent damage.
