Keywords are reusable tags; captions are descriptions of individual photos or videos. Add a keyword such as camping to each relevant item to group them, and use a caption such as “Tent beside the lake at sunrise” to preserve that image’s specific context. Apple documents both as searchable, but does not explain exact matching or ranking behavior.

iPhone Photos keywords and captions at a glance

The practical difference is the job each field does. A keyword classifies an item so you can find other items with the same label. A caption describes what is in, or happening in, one particular photo or video. These are separate fields in Photos, not two names for the same kind of note.

Question Keyword Caption
Main purpose A reusable tag or label for grouping items. Descriptive text about a particular photo or video.
Example Iceland, hiking, or 2026-trip on each relevant item. Maya reaches the overlook above Skógafoss on the image showing that moment.
Where you enter it on iPhone In the information view, using Add Keywords. In the caption field in the information view.
Search support Apple documents a keyword suggestion and search workflow. Apple lists captions as a supported kind of search input.
Best fit Consistent categories or subjects shared across multiple items. Item-specific details, people, places, or context you want to remember.

Apple describes keywords as tags or labels and provides controls for adding and managing them. Its iPhone information-view guide describes a caption field for describing an item and making it easier to find in Search. The examples above illustrate those roles; they are not terms prescribed by Apple. See Apple’s keyword guide and photo-information guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The difference in one sentence

A keyword answers “Which category or group should this item join?” A caption answers “What is happening in this particular item, and why might I want to remember it?” The same photo can have both. For example, a lake image could carry the keywords Iceland, camping, and 2026-trip, while its caption says, “Tent beside the lake at sunrise.”

This distinction is useful because a photo library usually needs two kinds of information. Repeated labels make a set manageable, while individual descriptions preserve the story of one frame. If you put every detail into keywords, your label list becomes difficult to maintain. If you put every grouping term only into captions, you may use slightly different wording from one item to the next and make consistent retrieval harder.

Which should you use?

Use keywords for repeatable categories

Choose a keyword when you want a consistent label to apply to multiple photos or videos. For example, adding camping to every relevant image gives you a category to search for later. Keywords can describe a trip, activity, subject, project, person, place, or another grouping that matters to you. The useful property is consistency: apply the same label to each item you want associated with that group.

Think of a keyword as a reusable index term. If ten images belong to the same trip, applying 2026-trip to all ten creates a common connection. If only a subset shows hiking, apply hiking to that subset as well. A single item can therefore have several keywords, each representing a different useful dimension, such as location, activity, and event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a spelling and naming style you can repeat. Decide whether you want labels such as family-reunion or family reunion, and then keep that choice for related items. This consistency advice is practical guidance based on Apple’s distinction between a tag and descriptive text; Apple does not publish a required keyword taxonomy or naming convention.

Use captions for details unique to an item

Write a caption when a photo’s individual context matters—for example, “Tent beside the lake at sunrise.” Another image from the same trip might show a trail, a meal, or a different person, so it needs its own description. Captions are useful for recording what is happening or why a particular image matters, rather than creating a reusable classification scheme.

A caption can identify a person’s role, a landmark, an occasion, or a moment that would be hard to distinguish later. “Maya reaches the overlook above Skógafoss” tells you more about that frame than a generic Iceland label. A short, concrete sentence is usually easier to recognize than a string of disconnected terms, but Apple does not prescribe a caption length or writing style.

A caption can include words you may later search for, but Apple’s documentation does not say that captions behave like a keyword taxonomy. If you need reliable grouping across a set, use the same keyword on the relevant items instead of relying on similar wording in several captions.

Use both when you need both kinds of information

A photo can have broad keywords and an item-specific caption. Tag several trip photos with camping, Iceland, and 2026-trip, then caption one “Tent beside the lake at sunrise” and another “Maya cooks breakfast near the trailhead.” The keywords connect the images at a broad level; the captions distinguish the individual scenes.

This combination also works for recurring projects. You might use school-event on every image from an event, add stage to pictures taken onstage, and write a caption for each image that records who appears and what is happening. The fields remain separate, so you can change a description without redesigning your labels, or revise a label without rewriting every scene description.

Apple’s iCloud.com documentation also presents captions and keywords as separate editable fields. That reinforces the practical choice to treat them as complementary metadata rather than competing versions of the same note.

How to add or edit a keyword on iPhone

  1. Open the item. In Photos, open the photo or video you want to label.
  2. Open its information. Tap the Info button or swipe up to show the information view.
  3. Enter a keyword. Choose Add Keywords, enter one or more custom keywords, and tap Done.
  4. Edit existing keywords if needed. Once keywords are present, tap Edit in the keyword field to add or change them.

The workflow applies to photos and videos. If you are labeling a set, repeat the same keyword on every relevant item; the value comes from using one consistent label across the items you want to retrieve together. The guide does not describe a separate bulk-labeling command in this workflow, so do not assume that selecting many items will expose exactly the same controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple documents keyword management under Collections, then the profile button, then Manage Keywords. There you can favorite, rename, or delete a keyword. Favoriting can help you keep important terms prominent in the management view; renaming and deleting are available maintenance actions when your label list changes. Apple’s guide does not set a limit on the number of keywords or require a particular format.

Menu names can vary as iOS changes. If you do not see Add Keywords, Edit, or Manage Keywords in the location described, consult Apple’s current iPhone keyword instructions for the iOS version and device you are using rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

How to add or edit a caption

  1. Open the photo or video in Photos.
  2. Tap Info or swipe up to open its information view.
  3. Enter or update text in the caption field. Use a short description that identifies the specific scene, event, or context you want to preserve.

The information view can include a caption alongside other details, such as detected people and pets, Visual Look Up items, event information, device, capture date and time, and camera metadata. What appears depends on the item. A caption is only one part of this view, so do not confuse automatically detected information with text you have manually written.

Captions are especially useful when two images share the same keyword but represent different moments. For a birthday party, birthday might be the reusable label, while captions distinguish “Grandpa lights the candles,” “Nora opens the blue gift,” and “Everyone gathers on the patio.” The words are descriptive, not a promise that Photos will match every variation in a particular way.

How searching works for each field

Find items by keyword

Tap Search in Photos and enter the keyword. Apple says keyword suggestions are marked Aa; tap the relevant suggestion to see items carrying that keyword. Its guide also says you can enter multiple keywords separated by spaces.

Entering more than one word does not give you a documented Boolean recipe. Apple does not explain whether multiple terms are combined using AND, OR, or another rule, nor does it describe how results are ranked. Therefore, do not promise that a search for Iceland hiking will necessarily mean “items carrying both labels,” and do not assume that punctuation, capitalization, singular forms, or synonyms will be handled in a specific way.

If the exact label matters, start with the keyword suggestion marked Aa rather than guessing how free-text matching works. If a result set is not what you expected, try the individual keyword terms separately. That is a troubleshooting approach, not an Apple guarantee about the search algorithm.

For the documented keyword workflow, see Apple’s Add keywords to photos and videos on iPhone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search using caption text

Apple’s general iPhone Photos search guide lists Caption as a supported type of search input. That establishes that captions can help you find items, but Apple does not provide a separate caption-search walkthrough or specify whether matching is exact, partial, ranked, or affected by language.

Use a caption as searchable context, but treat the result as a capability rather than a guarantee about a particular query. Apple does not state that a caption search will return every item containing a word, that it will recognize a synonym, or that it will prioritize a caption over other photo information. The documented fact is simply that Caption is one of the supported kinds of input in Photos Search. See Apple’s iPhone Photos search guide.

A practical organization method

  1. Choose a small set of repeatable labels. Start with terms that describe the trip, project, activity, or subject you expect to revisit.
  2. Apply those keywords consistently. Add the same spelling to every relevant photo or video instead of creating near-duplicates such as hike, hiking, and hikes unless you intentionally want separate groups.
  3. Add captions only where the individual story matters. Describe the scene, people, or reason the frame is important.
  4. Test retrieval in Search. Search for a keyword and look for the Aa suggestion. Try a caption term as well, while remembering that Apple does not document exact matching behavior.
  5. Review your vocabulary occasionally. Use Manage Keywords to favorite, rename, or delete labels as your system evolves.

This approach separates the maintenance task from the writing task. Keywords form a repeatable set of labels; captions record the details that vary from item to item. It also lets you use both fields without copying the same long sentence into every photo or forcing a unique event detail into a reusable tag.

Examples: the same library using both fields

Travel

For a week in Iceland, use Iceland and 2026-trip across the relevant items. Add camping to the campsite images and hiking to trail photos. Then caption individual frames: “Tent beside the lake at sunrise,” “Maya reaches the overlook above Skógafoss,” or “Rain clears over the campsite.” The labels identify the shared trip and activities; each caption identifies one moment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Family event

Apply family-reunion to the photos from the gathering. Add portraits to the posed images and caption specific moments such as “Cousins compare old photographs after lunch.” A keyword alone would not tell you which frame shows that exchange; a caption alone would require you to repeat the event wording on every image.

Work or creative project

Use a project label such as kitchen-renovation on progress photos. Add narrower labels such as before, installation, or tile where they help you group the set, and caption an individual image with details such as “Sample layout tested beside the north wall.” These are examples of how the documented tag-versus-description distinction can be applied; Apple does not require these terms.

What happens to these fields in iCloud Photos?

On iCloud.com, Apple documents editing a title and caption and adding or editing keywords. The fields remain distinct in that interface: a title or caption supplies descriptive text, while keywords supply labels that can be managed separately.

Apple’s iCloud.com guide also says that edits to captions or keywords on an item in an iCloud Shared Photo Library are visible to all participants. That statement applies to the documented iCloud.com and Shared Photo Library context. It should not be taken as a general guarantee about exports, third-party apps, or every device and library workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cited Apple pages do not establish whether a keyword or caption is embedded in every exported file, preserved by every other photo service, or displayed identically on non-Apple platforms. If portability is important, verify the behavior for the named export and destination rather than assuming that an on-device field will travel unchanged.

Common mistakes and limits

  • Treating a caption as a shared tag. Similar sentences are not the same as applying one consistent keyword. Use a keyword when the goal is a repeatable group.
  • Expecting Apple’s search logic to be fully documented. Apple confirms support for keywords and captions as search inputs, but the cited guides do not describe exact matching, ranking, language handling, or how multiple keyword terms are combined.
  • Assuming every word becomes a keyword. Text entered in the caption field is caption text. It does not automatically become a separate managed keyword in the documented workflow.
  • Creating inconsistent labels. If one item uses camping and another uses a different phrase for the same category, searching one term may not give you the grouping you intended. Standardize your own vocabulary.
  • Assuming metadata portability. The iPhone and iCloud guides do not establish export embedding or cross-platform preservation for these fields.
  • Confusing detected information with your own metadata. People, pets, Visual Look Up results, event information, device details, capture date and time, and camera metadata may appear in the information view, but they are not the same as a manually entered caption or keyword.
  • Expecting identical menus on every release. The live iPhone guides describe a current workflow, while menu names and locations can shift between iOS versions. Use the guide for the software you actually run.
  • Overloading one field. A long narrative pasted into every item is difficult to maintain as a category system, while a bare keyword may fail to preserve why one particular image matters. Use each field for its documented role.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between iPhone Photos keywords and captions?

A keyword is a reusable tag or label for grouping photos and videos. A caption is descriptive text about one particular item. Use a keyword such as camping across many images and a caption such as “Tent beside the lake at sunrise” for one image’s context.

How do I add keywords to iPhone photos?

Open a photo or video, tap the Info button or swipe up, choose Add Keywords, enter one or more custom keywords, and tap Done. When keywords already exist, tap Edit in the keyword field.

Can I search iPhone photos by caption?

Yes. Apple’s general iPhone Photos search guide lists Caption as a supported search input. Apple does not specify whether caption matching is exact, partial, ranked, or language-dependent, so it does not promise a particular result pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do iPhone Photos keywords work like tags?

Yes, in the practical sense that Apple defines keywords as tags or labels associated with photos and videos. They are intended to be reusable and managed as labels; captions are a separate descriptive field.

Can one photo have both a keyword and a caption?

Yes. Add one or more reusable keywords for the broader group and write a caption for that item’s specific scene or context. The two fields are separate and complementary.

How do I manage existing keywords?

Apple documents keyword management under Collections, then the profile button, then Manage Keywords. The documented controls let you favorite, rename, or delete a keyword.

Can I enter more than one keyword?

Apple’s keyword guide says you can enter multiple keywords separated by spaces. It does not explain the Boolean or filtering logic used when multiple terms are searched together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will changing a caption or keyword appear in a Shared Photo Library?

Apple’s iCloud.com documentation says edits to captions or keywords on an item in an iCloud Shared Photo Library are visible to all participants. That statement is specific to that documented context and is not a general promise about every export or third-party library.

Are keywords and captions preserved when I export a photo?

The cited Apple iPhone and iCloud guides do not establish export embedding or preservation across other platforms and services. Verify the exact export and destination workflow if portability matters.

The Bottom Line

Use keywords to group; use captions to explain. Apply the same keyword to every relevant photo or video, write captions for details unique to individual items, and use both when you need broad organization plus specific context. Apple confirms that both fields can support search, but leaves exact matching, ranking, and portability details unspecified.
