If your child uses an iPhone, use Apple Screen Time through Family Sharing. Google Family Link can be installed on a parent’s iPhone, but Google does not allow an iPhone or iPad to be a supervised child device. That means Family Link cannot apply its device-level screen-time, location, app-management, or Chrome controls to your child’s iPhone.
Family Link is the better-supported path when the child uses a compatible Android phone, Chromebook, or eligible Fitbit device. The parent’s phone is only the control console; the child device determines which controls are available.

The answer depends on the child’s device
Do not choose between Screen Time and Family Link based on the parent’s phone. A parent can run Family Link on an iPhone, but that does not turn the child’s iPhone into a supervised Family Link device. Apple Screen Time is the native control system for an iPhone or iPad child device.

What Apple Screen Time can manage on a child’s iPhone
Apple describes Screen Time as a set of parental controls for managing the apps and websites a child can access, who they communicate with, when they use their devices, and related content and privacy settings. A Family Sharing organiser or parent or guardian can manage a child’s iPhone or iPad from the organiser’s Apple device.
Apps, downloads, and websites
Screen Time can restrict which apps and websites a child may use. Parents can apply age-based content restrictions and manage access to Apple content and apps. App and download requests can require a parent’s approval rather than allowing the child to install items without review.
These controls are not the same as a promise that every page on the internet is blocked. The available restrictions and their exact labels depend on the child’s device, software, age, country or region, and Apple Account configuration.

Communication and contact approval
Screen Time includes communication controls for supported Apple communication apps. Apple’s current setup guidance describes contact-approval options for eligible child accounts, allowing a parent to decide which contacts a child can communicate with under the supported rules.
Because eligibility depends on account age and the software in use, check the options shown for the particular child account instead of assuming every family sees the same contact workflow.

Schedules and time allowances
Parents can decide when the child may use the device and set schedules or allowances for use. This lets a family establish periods when the device is available and periods when selected apps or device activity should be restricted.
Screen Time activity reports show usage information to the parent. Treat the report as a management aid, not as an independent measurement of everything a child does across every account or device.
Content and privacy settings
Screen Time can adjust ratings and restrictions for Apple content, apps, and device settings, including privacy controls. These settings are intended to prevent changes to selected account, purchase, and privacy options without the parent’s approval.
Apple’s controls are tied to Apple devices and Apple’s account and Family Sharing structure. They do not automatically supervise a child’s Android phone, Chromebook, or unrelated web account.
Separate Screen Time passcode
A Screen Time passcode protects the parental-control settings. Apple says this passcode is separate from the device unlock passcode. Use a passcode the child does not know, and do not reuse the child’s phone-unlock code.

How to set up Screen Time through Family Sharing
The exact labels can change with iOS and iPadOS releases, but the setup follows this sequence. Use the child’s own Apple Account in Family Sharing rather than sharing an adult account; Apple recommends that account structure for children.

Install the current software available for the parent’s Apple device and the child’s iPhone or iPad. Apple’s redesigned parental-control experience described for version 27 requires all eligible devices in the Family Sharing group to be on version 27 or later. If a device cannot update, the family can continue with the previous Screen Time experience or change controls directly on the child’s device.
- Confirm Family Sharing. On the parent’s device, open Settings and review the Family or Family Sharing area. Make sure the child appears as a family member with the child’s own Apple Account.
- Open Screen Time for the child. In Settings, open Screen Time and select the child’s name or the family member whose device you want to manage. If the child is not shown, finish the Family Sharing and Apple Account setup first.
- Choose the control categories. Configure downtime or other schedules, app and website limits, content and privacy restrictions, communication options, and purchase or download approvals as appropriate for the child.
- Create the Screen Time passcode. Set the separate passcode when prompted. Store it securely; anyone who knows it may be able to change the restrictions.
- Test from the child’s device. Check a restricted app, an age-rated item, a blocked website, a communication request, and a scheduled period. Testing catches account, region, and software-version differences before the controls matter.
- Review reports and requests. Return to the child’s Screen Time panel to review activity reports and respond to app or download requests. Adjust limits when the child’s schedule or school requirements change.
Screen Time requirements and version caveats
- Software versions: Apple’s version 27 redesign is not automatically available on every iPhone or iPad. All eligible devices in the Family Sharing group must be updated to version 27 or later for that experience; otherwise use the previous Screen Time workflow or configure the child’s device directly.
- Age and account eligibility: Communication approval and some other options are available only for eligible child accounts. Apple does not present one universal workflow for every age.
- Country or region: Content ratings, communication features, account rules, and default settings can vary by geography.
- Device capability: Older hardware or software may not expose every current setting.
- Family structure: Remote management works through Family Sharing and the child’s Apple Account. Sharing an adult Apple Account can mix data and weaken the separation between the parent’s and child’s settings.
What Google Family Link can and cannot manage
Using Family Link on the parent’s iPhone
A parent can install the Family Link app on an iPhone or iPad and use it to manage some Google Account settings. That describes the parent console only. It does not make the parent’s iPhone, or the child’s iPhone, a supervised Family Link device.
If the child signs in to Google apps on an iPhone or iPad, Google lists the following Family Link settings as unavailable on that device:
- Screen-time limits
- Device location
- App activity
- Blocking apps and managing app permissions
- Google Chrome website and permission restrictions
The child may still sign in to some Google apps when a parent gives the required permission. Account supervision in that situation remains narrower than iPhone-wide device management. It does not control Apple apps, iOS settings, or the iPhone as a whole.
Devices Family Link is intended to supervise
Google’s supported-device model is aimed at compatible Android devices, Chromebooks, and compatible Fitbit devices. The exact feature set depends on the device and software version. Some schedule and contact-management features, for example, depend on the Android version.

How to set up Family Link for a supported child device
Use this path when the child has a compatible Android phone, Chromebook, or other device Google identifies as supported. The parent may use an iPhone for the Family Link app.
- Check device eligibility. Confirm that the child’s exact Android device, Chromebook, or compatible Fitbit device supports supervision and that its software is current enough for the features you need.
- Install Family Link on the parent’s iPhone. Sign in with the parent’s Google Account and follow the app’s family setup prompts.
- Prepare the child’s Google Account. Use the child’s own account rather than sharing the parent’s account. Follow the in-app instructions to add or supervise that account.
- Sign the child in on the supported device. Complete the child-device prompts while the parent is available to approve supervision and permissions.
- Set schedules and app rules. Configure daily limits, schedules, app activity, blocking, and permissions that the device supports.
- Enable location only where appropriate. If the device and account are eligible, review location settings and explain to the child what is being shared.
- Review Google Play controls separately. Choose purchase approvals and content restrictions, then test a download and a restricted item to confirm the expected behavior.
Google Play controls have a narrower scope
Family Link’s Google Play purchase approvals apply only to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. They do not automatically approve or block every transaction made in another app, website, store, or payment system.
Google also says Play content restrictions do not prevent restricted material from appearing in search results or being reached through a direct link. Treat Play filters as controls for Google Play content, not as an all-purpose web filter. On a child’s iPhone, the Play controls do not become iOS-wide restrictions simply because the child uses a Google Account.
Which system to use in common family situations
| Your situation | Recommended built-in path | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Child has an iPhone and the parent has an iPhone or iPad | Screen Time through Family Sharing | Apps and websites, communication, schedules and allowances, content and privacy, app requests, reports, and a Screen Time passcode. |
| Child has an iPhone but uses Google apps | Screen Time for the device; Google Account controls only where supported | Use Apple controls for iPhone-wide limits. Do not expect Family Link to provide location, app blocking, activity reports, or Chrome restrictions on that iPhone. |
| Child has supported Android and parent has an iPhone | Family Link | Use the parent app on iPhone to manage the supervised Android device’s limits, schedules, apps, location eligibility, and Google-service controls. |
| Child uses a Chromebook | Family Link supervision | Configure the Chromebook features shown for that device and software version; do not assume every Android option appears on ChromeOS. |
| Family has both iPhone and Android child devices | Use each platform’s native system | Screen Time manages the iPhone or iPad; Family Link manages the supported Android or Chromebook. Keep separate checklists because the controls are not interchangeable. |
Troubleshooting: why a control is missing or ineffective
Family Link shows the account but no device controls
Check whether the child is using an iPhone or iPad. Google’s documented limitation is decisive: those devices cannot be supervised with Family Link. Use Screen Time for the iPhone, and reserve Family Link for supported devices.
The parent uses an iPhone and assumes Family Link should control the child’s iPhone
Separate the parent-console question from the child-device question. The Family Link app can run on the parent’s iPhone, but the child device still has to be a supported Android, Chromebook, or compatible Fitbit device for device-level supervision.

A Screen Time option is absent
Check the child’s Apple Account, age eligibility, country or region, device model, and software version. If the family expected the version 27 redesign, verify that every eligible Family Sharing device is updated to version 27 or later. Otherwise use the previous Screen Time experience or configure the setting directly on the child’s device.
Chrome or website restrictions are not working
On a child’s iPhone, Family Link’s Chrome website and permission restrictions are documented as unavailable. Use Screen Time’s app and website controls for that iPhone. On a supported Android or Chromebook, confirm that the child is signed in to the supervised account and that the device software supports the specific restriction.
Location is unavailable
Family Link location is for eligible supervised devices, not iPhones and iPads. On a supported device, verify device eligibility, account supervision, location permission, and the device’s current software before troubleshooting the Family Link app itself.

A Play restriction did not block a web result
This is expected when the material is reached through search or a direct link. Google Play content restrictions govern Play content within their stated scope; they are not comprehensive web filtering.
Privacy and account practices that prevent avoidable problems
- Give the child a separate Apple Account or Google Account instead of sharing an adult account. Separate accounts keep activity, purchases, contacts, and settings attributable to the right person.
- Protect the Screen Time passcode and the parent account with a credential the child cannot guess.
- Explain location and communication rules before enabling them, and revisit them as the child’s age, school needs, and devices change.
- Keep the parent and child devices updated together when a platform requires matching software for a redesigned control experience.
- Test one restriction in each category after setup. A visible setting is not proof that the child’s exact device, account, region, and app support it.
Bottom line
For an iPhone child device, Apple Screen Time is the control system that can manage apps and websites, communication, schedules, content, privacy, requests, reports, and a dedicated passcode. Family Link can be useful from a parent’s iPhone, but it does not supervise the child’s iPhone and its listed device-level controls do not work there. For a supported Android phone or Chromebook, Family Link is the appropriate native supervision path, with Google Play and device-specific limits clearly kept in scope.
