Yes. Your iPhone already has a Measure app that can estimate furniture dimensions with the camera. It can recognize rectangular objects such as tables, cabinets and countertops, or measure between two points that you select yourself.
Use it for quick buying, layout and delivery decisions. Apple warns that “Measurements are approximate,” so verify a final doorway clearance, custom cut or expensive order with a physical retractable tape measure.
What the iPhone Measure app can do
Measure turns the iPhone camera into an estimating tool. You point the camera at a nearby object, let the app identify edges and surfaces, and then place measurement points on the live view. For a clearly rectangular item, the app may draw a white outline and offer the object’s dimensions automatically. For an irregular item, you can set the beginning and ending points manually.

The app estimates straight-line dimensions visible to the camera. It is not a structural survey tool, a certified building measurement, or a guarantee that a piece will pass through a doorway. Cushions, trim, rounded corners, overhanging tops and packaging can all change the real clearance.

How to measure furniture with an iPhone
1. Open Measure
Find Measure in the iPhone’s Utilities folder, or search for it from the Home Screen. The App Store listing requires iOS 12 or later.
2. Give the camera a clear view
Hold the iPhone so the furniture is visible from the side you need to measure. Move slowly rather than sweeping quickly. Good lighting and a contrast between the object and its surroundings make edges easier for the camera to identify.
3. Scan the object
Pan around the furniture until the app has enough visual information to recognize its surfaces. Keep the phone steady and avoid covering the camera lenses with a finger or case edge.
4. Accept an automatic rectangle
When the app detects a rectangular object, a white rectangle appears around it. Tap that rectangle to display the detected dimensions. If the outline does not appear, tap the Add button and place the points yourself.
5. Place points manually when needed
For a round table, curved sofa arm, ornate cabinet or other shape that is not a simple rectangle, position the on-screen marker at one end of the edge. Tap the Add button, move to the other end, and tap again. The displayed value is the straight-line distance between those points. Repeat for the other dimensions you need, such as width, depth and height.

6. Record the result
Use the camera control in the app to save a visual record when you need to remember which edge a number belongs to. A photo showing the measurement line is more useful later than a number copied into a note without context.
7. Choose your units
Switch between metric and imperial units in the app interface before recording a set of dimensions. Use one unit system consistently when comparing the measurement with a retailer’s specification sheet or a room plan.

A furniture measurement is only one part of a fit check. The route into the room can be more restrictive than the final location, so measure both the item and the path.
Measure the furniture’s critical dimensions
- Overall width: the longest side that must pass through a doorway, hall or lift.
- Depth: important when the item must turn a corner or be carried upright.
- Height: check both the standing height and the height when the item is tilted during delivery.
- Protrusions: include handles, legs, feet, knobs and fixed rails that cannot be removed.
Measure from the outermost physical points, not only from the flat front panel. A sofa’s arms and a cabinet’s hardware may extend beyond the main rectangle.
Measure the route
Use the app on the doorway, hallway and final position, then account for door leaves, frames, baseboards, radiators and handrails. A doorway that looks wider than the furniture may still fail when the item is tilted or turned. For a high-value purchase, confirm the narrowest point with a retractable tape measure.

Leave an installation margin
Do not plan for a zero-clearance fit. You need room to hold, rotate and protect the item, and walls are rarely perfectly square. The app cannot know how much space movers need for hands, straps or protective wrapping, so treat its result as a planning estimate rather than a pass/fail certificate.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide recommends measuring well-defined objects roughly 0.5 to 3 meters (2 to 10 feet) from the iPhone. Within that range, use a surface with visible edges and move slowly enough for the camera to track the scene.
Accuracy can drop in several common situations:
- Low light or glare: reflections on glass, polished stone or glossy paint can hide an edge.
- Uniform surfaces: a plain white wall, featureless cushion or dark object against a dark background gives the camera few points to follow.
- Soft or irregular shapes: pillows, blankets and curved upholstery do not have a single unambiguous boundary.
- Occlusion: a table leg, plant or other object blocking an endpoint makes the inferred edge less reliable.
- Long distances: measuring from outside the recommended range can make small endpoint errors produce a larger final difference.
- Perspective: a dimension viewed at an angle may be harder to align than an edge facing the camera.
Apple’s published wording is explicit: “Measurements are approximate.” The company does not provide a universal accuracy percentage for every iPhone, room, material or lighting condition. Repeat a measurement from another angle; if the values differ materially, use the physical dimension as the deciding value.
Using the app for different furniture types
Rectangular tables and desks
Scan the top and let the app outline the rectangle when it can. Measure the top’s width and depth separately from the overall height, because legs, cable trays or a raised backsplash may change the usable space. If you are checking a desk against a wall, measure the wall section independently and account for outlets, switches and skirting boards.
Sofas and armchairs
Measure the widest outside points, including arms. Measure seat depth only if that dimension affects the room layout; the app’s line is a geometric distance, not a comfort rating. Cushions that can be removed should be measured separately when the delivery route depends on reducing the package size.

Bookcases and cabinets
Capture width, depth and height, then check the ceiling or window clearance at the intended position. For tall furniture, also measure the diagonal clearance needed to tip it upright. A cabinet that fits when standing may not be able to rotate from a horizontal delivery position.
Countertops and built-ins
Use manual points along each straight run and around openings. Record the location of sinks, cooktops, pipes and wall irregularities separately. A custom cut should never rely on a camera estimate alone; verify every cut-list dimension with a physical tool and the installer’s requirements.
Supported iPhone hardware and guide lines
The Measure app listing identifies iOS 12 or later as the software requirement. Automatic object measurement can be useful on supported iPhones, but enhanced horizontal and vertical guide lines are documented for iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and later supported Pro hardware. The exact behavior therefore depends on the iPhone model and the version of iOS installed.
If a feature described in a tutorial is missing, check the model first rather than assuming the app is malfunctioning. Update iOS when an update is available, then reopen Measure and test it on a well-defined object in good light.
Room-scale measuring with RoomPlan
If you need to capture several pieces of furniture and the room around them, Apple’s RoomPlan API is a different workflow. On supported iPhone and iPad hardware with a LiDAR Scanner, it uses the camera and depth data to create a 3D floor plan that includes room dimensions and characteristics of detected furniture.

RoomPlan is suited to documenting a room for later layout or visualization. It is not a reason to skip a tape measurement for construction, fabrication or a delivery decision. A room scan can describe the overall geometry while small edge clearances, removable parts and the delivery path still require direct checking.
Choosing the right method for the decision

Troubleshooting weak or missing measurements
No white rectangle appears
Move closer or farther until the object is clearly framed, improve the lighting and scan more slowly. Make sure the object has visible straight edges. If automatic detection still fails, use the Add button to place the endpoints manually.
The number jumps while you move
Stop moving briefly, keep the phone level and place the endpoint at a sharp physical corner. Avoid measuring across a cushion, reflection or object that is partly hidden. Taking a second reading from another angle can reveal whether the first endpoint was misplaced.
The result looks obviously wrong
Check that the camera is measuring the intended outer edges rather than an inner panel or shadow. Remove visual obstructions, repeat the scan and compare the result with a known reference such as a standard door width. If the decision has financial, safety or fabrication consequences, disregard the estimate and use a physical measurement.
Guide lines or a documented feature are unavailable
Confirm that the iPhone model supports the feature and that iOS is current. Enhanced guide-line behavior is model-dependent, so an older or non-Pro iPhone may present a simpler interface even when Measure itself is installed.
A reliable furniture-measuring checklist
- Open Measure from the Utilities folder and confirm the unit system.
- Clear the camera view and provide even lighting.
- Scan slowly until the object is stable on screen.
- Accept the automatic rectangle only when it follows the true outer edges.
- Use manual points for curves, gaps and non-rectangular pieces.
- Measure the furniture, the destination and the entire delivery route.
- Save a photo that shows which edge each number represents.
- Repeat any critical reading from a second angle.
- Confirm final doorway, custom-cut and expensive-purchase dimensions with a retractable tape measure.
The iPhone Measure app is best understood as a fast spatial-estimation tool. It can save time when you are comparing furniture with a room, but the app’s own approximation warning determines how far you should trust the result: use the camera for planning, and use a physical measurement when being wrong would cost more than a few minutes.
