Apple Lockdown Mode is for people who may be individually targeted by highly sophisticated attacks such as mercenary spyware. It reduces the ways an attacker can reach an iPhone by disabling or restricting risky messaging, web, invitation, photo-sharing, wireless, and device-management features. It is not an antivirus scan, an intrusion detector, or a guarantee that spyware cannot compromise a device. Most people will never need it, but it can be a valuable defensive layer for a credible high-risk target.
What does iPhone Lockdown Mode protect against?
Lockdown Mode is an optional security setting designed for “extremely rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks,” according to Apple Support. These attacks are often associated with commercial or mercenary spyware used against selected individuals rather than with ordinary mass-market malware. The setting lowers the attack surface by making common entry points less capable or less reachable.
That distinction matters. Lockdown Mode does not inspect the phone and announce that it is clean. It does not remove an infection that is already present, and it cannot promise protection from every future exploit. Apple describes the mode as deliberately restrictive: “When Lockdown Mode is turned on, a device doesn’t function the way it typically does.”

How Lockdown Mode reduces the attack surface
Messages: fewer attachment and preview paths
Most attachment types are blocked in Messages while the mode is active. Apple allows certain images, video, and audio, but limits other content that could contain a complex parser or exploit. Links and link previews are also restricted. This makes it harder for an attacker to deliver a weaponized file or entice the phone to fetch and render a hostile destination automatically.
Web browsing: complex technologies are limited
Lockdown Mode blocks or limits selected complex web technologies. As a result, a site may load slowly, fail to work, omit web fonts, or display missing images. The inconvenience is intentional: sophisticated browser exploits often rely on advanced features that are useful for modern websites but increase the code exposed to untrusted content.
FaceTime and Apple-service invitations
Incoming FaceTime calls are blocked unless you have contacted that person within the previous 30 days. Certain invitations to Apple services are also blocked unless you previously invited the sender. SharePlay, Live Photos, and Game Center are among the affected features. The rule is aimed at unsolicited interaction, where an attacker can attempt to reach a target without an established relationship.

Photos: less metadata sharing and no Shared Albums
Location information is omitted from photos shared while Lockdown Mode is enabled. Shared Albums are removed from Photos during that period, and new Shared Album invitations are blocked. Existing album content is not a convenient route for an unsolicited attacker, but the change can disrupt family, work, or collaborative photo workflows.

Connections and networks
An iPhone or iPad must be unlocked before it can connect to an accessory or another computer. The device avoids automatically joining non-secure Wi-Fi and disconnects from such a network when Lockdown Mode is turned on. On iPhone and iPad, 2G and 3G support is disabled. These measures reduce opportunities for an attacker to use a cable, an untrusted network, or an older cellular protocol as part of an intrusion chain.
Configuration and device management
Configuration profiles cannot be installed, and the device cannot enroll in mobile-device management or supervision while the mode is enabled. That can prevent a malicious profile from changing settings or establishing administrative control, but it also means a legitimate employer or school enrollment may need to wait until the mode is turned off.
What still works
Ordinary phone calls and plain text messages continue to work. Emergency functions, including SOS calls, are unaffected. Lockdown Mode is therefore restrictive rather than isolating: the core communication and emergency functions remain available while higher-risk features are narrowed.

Apple says most people will never be targeted by attacks of this sophistication. The decision should be based on a credible, personal risk—not on a desire for a general security “boost.” Consider enabling it if your role, public profile, contacts, or circumstances could make you a valuable target for a sophisticated actor.

- People doing sensitive public-interest, investigative, legal, political, human-rights, or security work.
- Individuals who handle confidential information that could be valuable to a state-linked or commercial spyware operator.
- People who have received an Apple threat notification or have another specific reason to believe they are being targeted.
- Close contacts of a high-risk person when their devices or conversations could provide an alternative route to that target.
The absence of an Apple notification does not prove that your risk is zero. Amnesty International notes that people with independent, credible reasons to believe they may be targeted can enable Lockdown Mode for additional protection. Conversely, turning it on solely because ordinary phishing, lost-device theft, or common malware is a concern may impose daily restrictions without addressing the main risk.
Does Lockdown Mode block Pegasus?
No universal block has been established. Citizen Lab’s April 18, 2023 report examined NSO Group exploit activity observed in 2022 and described at least three iOS 15/16 zero-click exploit chains used against civil-society targets. For the PWNYOURHOME chain, investigators reported no successful compromise on devices with Lockdown Mode enabled.
That is meaningful, exploit-specific evidence that reducing attack surface can help. It is not a success rate for Lockdown Mode and does not establish immunity from Pegasus, other spyware, or future techniques. The same report described a period when enabled targets received real-time warnings and raised the possibility that the operator later found a way to defeat that warning mechanism. Citizen Lab’s conclusion was qualified: any one measure is unlikely to blunt every targeted spyware attack, but the case supports enabling the feature for high-risk users.

Does an Apple threat notification mean you have been hacked?
An Apple threat notification means Apple believes you were targeted by an attack of the type covered by its alert system. It does not by itself prove that spyware was successfully installed. Amnesty International describes the notification as a strong indication of targeting, while stressing that confirmation of compromise requires forensic analysis. Amnesty’s Security Lab and partner organizations have forensically confirmed spyware cases among some recipients, but a notification and a confirmed infection are different findings.

If you receive an alert:
- Read Apple’s official guidance linked from the notification and avoid dismissing it as ordinary spam.
- Update every relevant Apple device to the latest available software before making other changes.
- Enable Lockdown Mode on the devices in scope, recognizing that it is a preventive reduction of attack surface rather than a cleanup tool.
- Preserve the notification and related account or device information. Do not reset or wipe a potentially important device before obtaining advice if forensic investigation may be needed.
- Seek qualified digital-forensics assistance. Amnesty says its Security Lab or Access Now may be able to help some civil-society members; availability and eligibility must be confirmed directly with those organizations.
Do not infer that a missing notification clears a device, and do not infer that a notification alone identifies the attacker or proves that data was accessed.
How to turn Lockdown Mode on
Apple recommends updating first and enabling the setting separately on each supported Apple device you use. The feature is available beginning with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 10; later releases add protections. Turning it on for an iPhone also turns it on for a paired Apple Watch.
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Lockdown Mode.
- Select Turn On Lockdown Mode.
- Choose Turn On & Restart, then enter the device passcode when prompted.
Repeat the process on every supported iPad or Mac that belongs to the same risk picture. An iPhone setting does not automatically protect an unrelated iPad or Mac. For a paired Apple Watch, the iPhone activation also enables the watch feature.

Which Apple devices and software are covered?

These are the platform starting points listed by Apple; the exact restrictions and available exclusions can change in later releases. Keeping software current is part of the protection because Apple’s later updates add security fixes and Lockdown Mode changes.

What are the everyday costs?
Before enabling the mode, identify the features you rely on most. A website that depends on advanced scripts may not function. A new contact may be unable to start a FaceTime call. A Shared Album may disappear from Photos until the setting is disabled. A computer, accessory, or management system may not connect until the phone is unlocked or the mode is turned off.
Apple allows a user to exclude a trusted website, app, or contact in some circumstances. An exclusion restores convenience by creating an exception to the restrictive rules, but it also reduces protection. Use one only when the workflow is necessary, verify that the control is available on your software version, and keep the exception as narrow as possible.
Lockdown Mode is reversible. If a legitimate task requires a blocked capability, you can turn the mode off, complete the task, update or verify the device, and turn it back on. For a high-risk person, that decision should be deliberate rather than an automatic response to every inconvenience.
A practical decision framework
Use these four questions rather than treating Lockdown Mode as a universal recommendation:
- How credible is the targeting risk? A specific threat notification, sensitive role, or documented targeting concern weighs heavily toward enabling it.
- How costly are the restrictions? If your work depends on Shared Albums, unrestricted web applications, unsolicited FaceTime, or device management, plan for the operational impact.
- Are all relevant devices updated and covered? A protected iPhone does not compensate for an exposed Mac, iPad, or other device that receives the same sensitive communications.
- Do you need response help as well as prevention? A notification or suspected compromise calls for forensic and account-security assistance; Lockdown Mode alone is not an investigation.
What Lockdown Mode cannot replace
Keep device software, apps, and account credentials current. Treat unexpected links, attachments, invitations, and authentication prompts cautiously. Use strong, unique account passwords and multifactor authentication where available, and limit sensitive data on devices that do not need it. These practices address broader account and operational risks; Lockdown Mode specifically reduces exposure to a narrow class of sophisticated device attacks.
Do not buy a new iPhone or an accessory merely to obtain Lockdown Mode. It is built into supported Apple operating systems and requires no separate purchase. The available evidence also does not establish that a consumer spyware-removal product is necessary. When the concern is a credible targeted attack, qualified forensic assistance is more relevant than a generic cleanup claim.
Bottom line for high-risk iPhone users
Lockdown Mode is best understood as a deliberately inconvenient shield for a small population facing unusually capable, personalized attacks. It can remove or narrow exploit paths, and the PWNYOURHOME case shows why that can matter, but it is not a universal Pegasus blocker or a diagnosis of compromise. Enable it when your targeting risk is credible enough to justify the lost features, keep every device updated and covered, and treat any Apple threat notification as a reason to seek expert guidance rather than as proof—or disproof—of infection.
