For the quickest change, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics, choose Ringtone or Text Tone, and tap a sound to preview it before selecting it. iPhone also lets you give one contact a distinctive ringtone, create a short custom sound in GarageBand, buy a tone through the Tone Store, or change the vibration that accompanies an alert.

The best option depends on what you value: speed, personal control, caller identification, or access to a ready-made purchased tone. The comparison below explains what each route can and cannot do, including GarageBand’s file restrictions, its 30-second export ceiling, and regional limits on purchased tones.

Which iPhone sound option should you use?

iPhone’s sound controls cover several different jobs. A ringtone identifies an incoming call, a text tone identifies a message, and alert categories handle other notifications. You can set one sound for the whole phone or override it for individual people.

Option Best use Main limitation
Built-in tone Fast setup and immediate previewing You are limited to the sounds offered on that iPhone and in its software or region.
Per-contact tone Recognizing an important caller or texter without looking at the screen Each contact must be edited separately.
GarageBand ringtone Using an eligible audio file, a song segment, or an original recording The source file must be usable by GarageBand and the exported ringtone is short.
Tone Store purchase Buying a ready-made sound and previewing it before purchase It costs extra, and catalog and redownload availability vary by country or region.
Custom haptic Making an alert recognizable by vibration rather than loud sound It changes the vibration pattern, not the underlying audio.

There is no objectively “best-sounding” built-in tone. Phone speakers, cases, surroundings, and personal hearing all affect the result, so preview the candidates on your own iPhone rather than relying on a popularity ranking.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Change the default ringtone or text tone

Built-in sounds are the simplest choice because nothing has to be downloaded, edited, or purchased. Apple’s current instructions use the same basic path, although wording can vary slightly with the iOS release and device.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Tap Ringtone for incoming calls or Text Tone for messages.
  4. Tap each sound to hear its preview.
  5. Leave the sound you want selected, then return to Settings.

The same screen contains other alert categories. Select the category you want rather than assuming that changing Ringtone also changes message or calendar alerts; those categories are configured independently.

What built-in tones are good at

  • Immediate results: selection takes only a few taps and does not require another app.
  • Predictable operation: the tone is already in the system and does not depend on an imported file remaining on the phone.
  • Easy auditioning: every listed option can be previewed before you commit.

The trade-off is control. You can select from the available catalog, but you cannot change a built-in tone’s melody or choose an arbitrary song section from this menu.

Give one contact a different ringtone or text tone

A contact-specific sound is the most practical way to identify a particular person without assigning a custom sound to every call or message. You can set the call ringtone and text tone independently.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.
  1. Open Contacts and select the person.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Ringtone and choose a sound, or tap Text Tone and choose a message sound.
  4. Tap Done to save the contact.

This assignment applies to that contact even when the phone’s general default changes later. If you want the person to use the standard sound again, edit the contact and select the normal tone offered by your iPhone.

When contact tones are most useful

  • Assign a distinctive ringtone to family, a caregiver, or an on-call colleague.
  • Use a separate text tone when you need to recognize messages without checking the display.
  • Keep the general default tone conservative while reserving a more noticeable sound for priority contacts.

Create a custom ringtone with GarageBand

GarageBand is Apple’s route for making a ringtone from an audio file, an eligible song downloaded to the phone from your Apple Music library, or material you record or create in GarageBand. It gives you control over which portion is used, but not every music file qualifies.

Check the audio before you start

  • An audio file in the Files app or iCloud Drive can be imported.
  • A song from Apple Music can be used only when it is downloaded to the iPhone and is not protected.
  • Protected Apple Music tracks cannot be used for a ringtone.
  • An original recording made in GarageBand is eligible as project material.

Streaming access alone is not enough. If GarageBand marks a track as protected, choose another file or make your own recording instead of trying to bypass the restriction.

Build and trim the ringtone

  1. Open GarageBand and create or open an audio project.
  2. Choose an audio recorder or another project type that lets you work in the Tracks view.
  3. Open the loop or file browser, then import the eligible audio from Files or use material already made in GarageBand.
  4. Drag the audio into the Tracks area.
  5. Move the region’s start and end points to isolate the passage you want. Listen through the selection and remove silence or an abrupt beginning where necessary.
  6. Keep the project within the ringtone length allowed at export. Apple documents a maximum of 30 seconds; GarageBand can offer to shorten a longer project automatically, or you can trim it yourself for a cleaner result.
  7. Return to the project browser, select the project, and choose the share or export command for a ringtone.
  8. Give the ringtone a name and export it.

Choose where the exported sound goes

After export, GarageBand can offer to use the result as the standard ringtone, the standard text tone, or a ringtone for a particular contact. Choose the destination that matches your intent. If you skip assignment at this point, you can still select the exported sound later from Sounds & Haptics or from a contact’s Edit screen.

  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

Why a custom ringtone may not appear

  • The project is longer than the 30-second ringtone limit and was not shortened successfully.
  • The source is an Apple Music file protected against export.
  • The audio was never placed in the Tracks view before export.
  • You exported the project but did not choose a destination, then looked only at the default tone without opening the ringtone list.

Short, clearly edited clips work better than long passages with a gradual fade-in. Make the first second recognizable, because an incoming call may be answered or dismissed before the entire clip plays.

Buy a ready-made tone from Apple

Apple provides a storefront alternative for readers who would rather preview and purchase a finished tone than edit audio. From Settings > Sounds & Haptics, open the ringtone area and use the Tone Store option when it is shown. Apple’s iTunes Store guidance also describes previewing a tone before purchasing it.

  1. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.
  2. Tap the link to the Tone Store, if available.
  3. Preview the listed tones.
  4. Purchase the tone through the displayed store flow, then select it as a ringtone or find it in your available tones.

Store contents and features are not universal. Availability can vary by country or region, and Apple cautions that some older tone purchases may not be available for redownload. Treat a purchase as a storefront item whose future availability depends on the account, store, and region rather than assuming every past tone can always be restored.

When a purchase makes sense

Choose this route when you want a finished sound, do not need to edit a song, and accept the additional cost. If you want a particular passage from your own recording or music file, GarageBand provides more control than a storefront catalog.

Customize vibration and alert volume

Sound choice is only half of the alert experience. A ringtone that is distinctive in a quiet room may be hard to notice outdoors, while a loud tone may be inappropriate in a meeting. iPhone lets you adjust the vibration pattern and the level separately.

Use a different haptic pattern

In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, open the relevant sound category and choose from the available haptic patterns. On supported software, you can create a new vibration by recording a pattern with taps on the screen. This is useful when you need to identify an alert silently or want a less intrusive notification without replacing the sound file.

Set the loudness

Use the Ringtone and Alerts control in Settings > Sounds & Haptics to set the level for calls and alerts. The same area includes behavior for changing that level with the phone’s buttons. Alarm and timer behavior has its own controls, so changing the ringtone slider does not necessarily produce the result you expect for every time-based alert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the combination you intend to use: play the preview, feel the selected haptic, and check the volume in the environment where the alert matters. A custom vibration cannot compensate for a muted or very low sound level when you need an audible warning.

Choose the right method: a practical decision guide

  1. Need a change in under a minute? Use a built-in Ringtone or Text Tone and preview the list.
  2. Need to recognize one person? Edit that contact and assign Ringtone, Text Tone, or both.
  3. Have an eligible clip or your own recording? Use GarageBand, trim the passage, and export it as a ringtone.
  4. Want a finished sound without editing? Check the Tone Store, bearing in mind regional availability and purchase cost.
  5. Prefer quiet but identifiable alerts? Keep the audio simple and create or select a custom haptic pattern.

These choices can be combined. For example, you can keep a built-in default for most callers, assign a GarageBand ringtone to one contact, and use a custom vibration for messages. The settings are separate, so changing one does not automatically replace the others.

Troubleshoot a tone that does not work as expected

The preview plays, but the incoming alert is wrong

Check whether the contact has its own Ringtone or Text Tone assignment. A per-contact setting is intentionally more specific than the phone-wide default. Edit the contact and choose the sound you actually want.

The custom file cannot be imported

Confirm that it is available through Files or iCloud Drive and that it is not a protected Apple Music track. GarageBand can use an eligible downloaded song, but protection prevents export.

The export is rejected or shortened

Review the project length. A ringtone cannot exceed 30 seconds. Trim the Tracks region before export, or accept GarageBand’s offer to shorten the project.

A purchased tone is missing

Store availability differs by country or region, and Apple does not promise that every older purchase can be downloaded again. Check the Tone Store and the account used for the original purchase; if the item is not offered there, select another available tone or create an eligible one in GarageBand.

The phone is too quiet or the vibration is easy to miss

Return to Sounds & Haptics, raise the Ringtone and Alerts level, and review the selected haptic pattern. Also check the separate alarm and timer controls if the problem affects those alerts rather than calls or messages.

Bottom line

Built-in tones are the fastest and simplest choice, per-contact assignments provide the clearest caller identification, GarageBand offers the most personal control within Apple’s file and 30-second limits, and the Tone Store is a convenient paid catalog whose availability depends on region. Add a custom haptic pattern or adjust alert volume when the problem is how an alert is noticed rather than which melody plays.
