Set up and review your iPhone’s emergency tools before you need them. Emergency SOS, Medical ID and Emergency Contacts can help you reach responders or share information, while satellite SOS and Crash Detection have important model, location and connection limits. None guarantees that help can be reached.
Which iPhone emergency features should you enable?
These tools serve different purposes: some require you to act, while others can respond to a detected crash or an emergency call. Availability depends on your iPhone, location and connection.

1. Set up Emergency SOS and learn its button sequence
On most iPhones, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the Emergency SOS countdown ends. You can also enable a five-press shortcut by going to Settings > Emergency SOS > Call with 5 Presses. India uses a different default sequence, so check your device’s on-screen instructions rather than assuming either method applies everywhere.
After an emergency call, the iPhone can alert configured Emergency Contacts unless you cancel. It may share your location and send updates for a period after SOS begins. Learn which sequence your phone uses before an emergency, and avoid testing it by placing an actual emergency call. Apple’s Emergency SOS guide explains the feature and its behavior.

2. Add a Medical ID that responders can access
- Open the Health app and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Medical ID and add relevant details, such as allergies and medical conditions.
- Add trusted people under Emergency Contacts.
- Turn on Show When Locked and Emergency Call if you want the information accessible from the lock screen.
Include only information you want available in an emergency, and update it when your health details or contacts change. Apple says automatic sharing of Medical ID information during an emergency call is available in the United States and Canada; do not assume the same sharing flow applies elsewhere. 3. Choose Emergency Contacts who can respond
Add these contacts through Medical ID. Following an emergency call, your iPhone can notify them and share your current location if available. After SOS mode starts, they may receive location updates for a period. Choose people you trust who are likely to see and act on a message.

A contact notification is not an emergency-service dispatch: it does not call responders on your behalf. The details of alerts and location sharing are covered in Apple’s SOS guide and Apple’s personal safety guide.

4. Prepare for Emergency SOS via satellite
Satellite SOS is available on iPhone 14 or later in supported countries or regions when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable. Availability varies by geography, so check Apple’s current satellite availability information before a remote trip.

- Try calling emergency services first. If the call cannot connect, follow the on-screen prompts to use satellite SOS.
- Move to a place with a clear view of the sky; terrain, buildings and other obstructions can interfere.
- Before traveling, confirm your Medical ID and Emergency Contacts are current.
- To practice the interface without contacting responders, open Settings > Emergency SOS and try the satellite demo.

Crash Detection is documented for iPhone 14 or later. After detecting a severe car crash, the iPhone displays an alert and automatically starts an emergency call after 20 seconds unless you cancel it. Review the control at Settings > Emergency SOS > Call After Severe Crash.

If you are unresponsive and have no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, the phone may attempt Emergency SOS via satellite where that service is available. This is a conditional fallback, not a guarantee that a call will connect. Apple describes the feature in its Crash Detection guide.

6. Know when emergency texting or Siri may help
Texting emergency services is not available everywhere. Check local availability and know the emergency number used where you are; do not assume that texting 911 will work in every region. Apple also identifies Siri as a hands-free way to request emergency help, but a voice request can fail. Use the available local emergency method and follow the iPhone’s on-screen instructions.

Review public safety alerts
iPhone can notify you about emergency, government and public safety alerts. Review the alert controls available on your device and consult local guidance, since settings and alert systems can vary by region. Apple provides an overview on its Safety Features page.
