Apple’s potential advantage with iPhone Duo is not simply that it folds. It is that Apple controls the hardware, iOS behavior, developer tools, and app distribution—and says its software and several named third-party apps are designed to use the folding format. That could make moving between the outer and inner displays feel more coherent. It does not yet prove that Duo has more foldable-ready apps or a better experience than rival foldables.
What is the advantage in Apple’s closed system?
“Closed system” is a useful shorthand, not a formal technical label. The relevant point is that Apple can coordinate the phone’s hardware, iOS interface, developer APIs, and App Store distribution. For a foldable, that coordination may help apps respond when a person opens, closes, or reorients the device.
Apple announced iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone on September 9, 2026. The company says the device’s iOS 27 experience changes as the phone folds, turns, or flips over, and that its own apps are optimized for the design. Apple also named Netflix, Zoom, and Slack as apps using the folding format. These are launch-announcement claims, not an independent audit of app availability, quality, or day-to-day performance. What the two displays and iOS features add
Apple specifies a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. It says the outer screen has 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro, and the inner display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. These are Apple’s published comparisons, not independent measurements. Apple’s product announcement

Multitasking on the inner display
Apple says iOS 27 brings Split View to iPhone Duo, letting users place two apps side by side. It also describes app pairs and the ability to open two windows of the same app, such as Safari. These features could make the larger display useful for working across tasks rather than merely enlarging a single app; the cited announcement does not establish how well they work in everyday use.
Examples Apple has named
Apple says Zoom can show shared content and participants together, while Slack can display a whole workspace. It also names Netflix as an app using the folding design. Those examples show that Apple has identified specific apps at launch; they do not establish that every popular app is adapted, or how broad developer adoption is. Apple’s launch announcement

Will existing iPhone apps use the full inner screen?
Not necessarily. Apple says all apps run on iPhone Duo, but an app’s behavior depends in part on the SDK it was built with. Its developer documentation says apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier may appear centered on the inner display with unused space, rather than adapting fully to it. Apps built with the iOS 27 SDK resize to use more of the display. Apple describes apps built with iOS 27.1 SDK or later as optimized for both displays, including edge-to-edge layouts and vertically arranged controls. Apple’s iOS 27 developer notes
That distinction matters: compatibility is not the same as optimization. Apple’s documentation describes a path for developers to improve layouts, but it does not mean every app will immediately take advantage of the inner screen. A large display can still show an app with empty space until its developer adapts it.

What this does—and does not—show about competing foldables
The strongest case for an Apple advantage is the potential to coordinate interface behavior and developer support across a controlled platform. A September 19, 2026 post by an independent developer proposed that Apple’s iPad app ecosystem could help its foldable phone, while noting that not all apps run on both iPhone and iPad. That is an individual hypothesis, not evidence that iPad apps automatically work on Duo or that Apple outperforms Android foldables. The developer’s post
The available product and developer materials do not provide a systematic comparison with competing foldables. To judge the advantage after launch, look beyond the number of apps mentioned in an announcement and consider:
