If you can’t call from your iPhone, first identify what is failing: outgoing calls, incoming calls, or cellular connection altogether. Airplane Mode, a disabled SIM or eSIM line, weak coverage, software or carrier settings, and carrier account or network problems can all interrupt calling. Try the quick checks below in order and test again after each one.
Start with the symptom
Whether you can place calls, receive them, or neither helps narrow down the cause. Apple’s call-failure guidance covers settings, software, and network problems; its SOS, No Service, or Searching guidance addresses loss of cellular registration.
- Outgoing calls fail: Check Airplane Mode, the line selected for calls on a Dual SIM iPhone, and whether your carrier account and service are active.
- Incoming calls do not ring or go to voicemail: Check Focus, blocked numbers, call forwarding, unknown-caller filtering, and Silent mode.
- The status bar says SOS, No Service, or Searching: The issue is cellular connection, coverage, or the line or SIM—not simply a call-ringer setting.
- Only some callers cannot reach you: Check blocked contacts and unknown-caller filtering, then ask the affected caller to try again.
Apple states that “If you see ‘No Service’ or ‘Searching’ in the status bar on your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular), your device isn’t connected to a cellular network.” SOS or SOS only likewise indicates that the iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. Emergency-call behavior varies by region.
Try the quick, reversible checks
Refresh the cellular connection
- Open Control Centre or Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Wait five seconds, then turn Airplane Mode off.
- Try a call again where cellular service is available.
If that does not help, restart the iPhone and test again. Apple includes both steps in its guidance for SOS, No Service, or Searching.

Check Focus and call-related settings
If calls are not ringing, turn off Focus or Do Not Disturb temporarily and check Silent mode. Then review these settings; labels can vary by iOS version, so use the search box in Settings if a path differs:
- Blocked contacts: Settings > Apps > Phone > Blocked Contacts. Confirm the caller is not blocked.
- Call forwarding: Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Forwarding. Turn it off if calls are being sent elsewhere unexpectedly.
- Unknown callers: Settings > Apps > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. If enabled, calls from numbers not recognized by your iPhone may be silenced and sent to voicemail. Review any call-filtering settings as well.
On some iOS versions, Phone appears directly in Settings rather than under Apps. Apple’s guidance for calls that do not ring and go straight to voicemail covers these incoming-call checks.

Check coverage, SIM or eSIM, and the active line
If the iPhone shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, move to another location and check whether the status changes. Coverage can vary by place, and a local outage may also prevent connection. On a Dual SIM device, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service) and make sure the intended line is turned on and available for calls.
If your iPhone uses a physical SIM, removing and reinserting it can help rule out a seating issue. Do not force a SIM that does not fit, and contact your carrier if it is damaged or ill-fitting. eSIM-only iPhone models have no physical SIM tray.

Install carrier settings and iOS updates
- Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About. If a carrier settings update is offered, follow the prompt to install it.
- Check Settings > General > Software Update and install an available iOS update. Some updates require Wi-Fi.
- Test calling again after each update.
Carrier-settings and software menu labels can vary by iOS version. Apple’s failed-call article and SOS and No Service article provide related troubleshooting steps.
When to contact your carrier
Contact the carrier if calls still fail, the iPhone remains without service, or the problem may involve your account or the network. Ask the carrier to check:

- Whether the account is active and correctly set up for this iPhone.
- Whether billing, a device restriction, or another account block is preventing calls.
- Whether there is an outage or coverage problem where you are.
- Whether the line is enabled and calls are failing on the carrier’s network.
Only the carrier can verify account status, carrier-side restrictions, and current service availability; Apple cannot see your carrier account details.

Use Wi-Fi Calling when cellular signal is weak
Wi-Fi Calling can let you make and receive calls through Wi-Fi when cellular signal is low, but support depends on your carrier and country or region. To check availability and setup, open Settings and search for “Wi-Fi Calling,” then follow the carrier’s instructions. Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling guide explains the feature. Emergency calls have special routing and location handling; follow any address or setup prompts from your carrier and your local emergency guidance.

Reset network settings only after easier checks
A network settings reset may help after the simpler steps fail, but it removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, and previously used VPN and APN settings. Make sure you can reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore any network details you need before proceeding.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset, then Reset Network Settings.
- After the iPhone restarts, reconnect as needed and test calling again.
This reset does not replace carrier help for account blocks, outages, or coverage problems.
When Apple service may be appropriate
If the carrier confirms the account, line, and network are working but the iPhone still cannot connect or call, contact Apple Support about service options. A failed call alone does not establish that the iPhone has a hardware fault.
