When iPhone Bluetooth is not finding devices, the accessory is usually not in discovery mode, is connected to another nearby device, has too little power, or still has a stale pairing. Put the accessory in pairing mode, keep it nearby, use Settings > Bluetooth, and forget and re-pair it if necessary.
The correct fix depends on what you see. An accessory that never appears has a discovery, power, range, compatibility, or competing-connection problem. An accessory that appears but will not pair needs a different path, usually involving a passcode, old pairing record, app permission, or accessory reset.
Key takeaways
- An iPhone should be kept within about 10 meters (33 feet) of a Bluetooth accessory during pairing, although walls and interference can reduce real-world range.
- Turning Bluetooth off in Control Center usually disconnects accessories but does not fully disable Bluetooth; use Settings > Bluetooth for the complete on/off control.
- An accessory can be powered on without being discoverable, so headphones, controllers, cars, and other devices must usually be placed in pairing or discovery mode.
- For a previously paired accessory, Forget This Device followed by a fresh pairing is more targeted and less disruptive than immediately resetting all iPhone settings.
- Reset All Settings preserves personal content but removes Bluetooth pairings, Wi-Fi networks and passwords, Apple Pay cards, and many other preferences.
What should you do first when iPhone Bluetooth is not finding devices?
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Turn the accessory off and on, then place it into its specific discovery or pairing mode.
- Charge the accessory, its case, dock, or replaceable batteries.
- Move the iPhone and accessory within a few feet of each other.
- Disconnect the accessory from nearby phones, tablets, Macs, cars, TVs, and computers.
- Restart both the iPhone and the accessory.
- Try pairing again while remaining on the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings screen.
- If the accessory was paired before, forget it and pair it again.
Apple’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance recommends checking power, discovery mode, proximity, other connected devices, compatibility, and re-pairing before escalating the problem.

Why does the accessory not appear in the Bluetooth list?
If the accessory is completely absent from Settings > Bluetooth, start with the accessory rather than assuming the iPhone’s Bluetooth hardware has failed. The most common causes are that the accessory is merely powered on instead of discoverable, has insufficient charge, is connected to another device, is too far away, or is not compatible with the required iPhone feature.

Is Bluetooth enabled in Settings?
Use Settings > Bluetooth as the authoritative control. Confirm the switch is on and leave this screen open while putting the accessory into discovery mode. The accessory should appear under the device list when it is actively advertising itself.
The Bluetooth button in Control Center is not equivalent to the full Bluetooth switch. According to Apple’s Control Center Bluetooth guidance, tapping that button generally disconnects Bluetooth accessories while leaving some Bluetooth-related functions available. To fully turn Bluetooth off and back on, use Settings > Bluetooth.
Is the accessory in pairing or discovery mode?
Simply switching on earbuds, headphones, a keyboard, speaker, game controller, car system, or tracker does not necessarily make the product visible to the iPhone. Pairing mode and discovery mode are the terms manufacturers use for the state in which an accessory advertises itself for a new connection.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn the accessory off.
- Turn it on again.
- Use the manufacturer’s specified button or button combination to enter pairing or discovery mode.
- Keep the iPhone on Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the accessory name when it appears, and enter a PIN or passcode if requested.
The exact button sequence varies by product. The accessory manual or manufacturer’s support page is the authority, particularly for devices that enter pairing mode only during first setup or after a reset. Apple describes the standard pairing sequence in its current iPhone Bluetooth guide.
Is the accessory charged and close enough?
Apple’s current iPhone guide says the iPhone and Bluetooth accessory should be within approximately 10 meters (33 feet) for pairing. That is an approximate maximum, not a guarantee: walls, people, metal objects, radio interference, and the accessory’s antenna can reduce practical range. Place both devices within a few feet for the cleanest test.
Check the accessory’s battery indicator, charging case, charging dock, replaceable batteries, and low-power warnings. An accessory with enough power to illuminate a light may still lack enough charge to complete pairing.
Is another nearby device already using the accessory?
A Bluetooth accessory may not advertise itself for a new pairing while it is connected to another iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android phone, television, car, tablet, or computer. Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on nearby devices or disconnect the accessory from each device, then put the accessory back into discovery mode.

This check is especially important for headphones, keyboards, game controllers, and car systems that reconnect automatically. If the accessory pairs with another phone but not the iPhone, Apple specifically recommends unpairing or disconnecting it from the other device before trying again.
Is the accessory compatible with the iPhone?
Bluetooth branding or a Bluetooth version number does not guarantee that every feature works with every iPhone. Compatibility can depend on the required Bluetooth profile, codec, service, iOS version, manufacturer app, firmware, Apple-specific integration, and the product’s intended use.
Specialized products can have additional requirements. A tracker, health device, hearing aid, smart-home product, or automotive accessory may need a manufacturer app, an account, location permission, Local Network permission, or a product-specific reset procedure. Apple notes that not all iOS or iPadOS accessories are fully compatible with iPhone and directs users to the manufacturer for confirmation.
What if the accessory appears but will not pair?
An accessory that appears in the Bluetooth list has passed the basic discovery test, but pairing can still fail because of an old pairing record, a wrong PIN, a competing connection, an app requirement, incompatible firmware, or an accessory-side fault.
- Tap the accessory name and enter the correct PIN or passcode if prompted.
- Disconnect the accessory from all nearby devices.
- If the accessory was previously paired with this iPhone, tap the Info button beside it and choose Forget This Device.
- Confirm by tapping Forget Device.
- Power-cycle the accessory and put it back into discovery mode.
- Pair it again from Settings > Bluetooth.
Forgetting a device deletes the existing pairing record; it does not permanently block the accessory from being paired again. Apple documents this procedure in its Forget This Device instructions.
How do you fix an iPhone Bluetooth device that connects and then disconnects?
Repeated disconnections usually point to power, distance, interference, multipoint behavior, firmware, or a second device reclaiming the connection rather than a simple discovery failure.
- Charge the accessory and its case or dock.
- Move the accessory close to the iPhone and remove nearby obstacles.
- Disconnect competing phones, computers, cars, tablets, and TVs.
- Check whether the accessory’s multipoint feature is switching to another device.
- Forget the accessory and complete a fresh pairing.
- Install accessory firmware updates if the manufacturer provides them.
- Test the accessory with another compatible device.
If another compatible phone also loses the connection, the accessory, its battery, or its firmware becomes more likely to be at fault. If the accessory works reliably elsewhere but not with the iPhone, continue with the iPhone-specific steps below.

Could an app’s Bluetooth permission be blocking the connection?
An app’s Bluetooth permission can prevent an app-controlled accessory from working, but app permission is not automatically the cause when ordinary Bluetooth headphones fail to appear in the system list. Apple distinguishes app Bluetooth access from some Bluetooth audio playback functions.

For a tracker, fitness device, hearing product, smart-home accessory, or other app-controlled product, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth. Turn on access for the relevant app, reopen the app, and follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Apple explains Bluetooth permissions for iOS 13 and later in its Bluetooth privacy settings guidance.
Do not manually pair every specialized product from Settings > Bluetooth. Some products are designed to be added inside their companion app or through a dedicated iPhone settings area. The manufacturer’s instructions determine the correct route.
What should AirPods users try?
AirPods and AirPods Pro have Apple-specific setup behavior, so generic Bluetooth instructions are not always sufficient. Apple recommends updating the iPhone, confirming that both AirPods are charging, checking that Bluetooth is on, closing and reopening the charging-case lid, and resetting the AirPods if the standard steps fail.
- Update the iPhone if an iOS update is available.
- Place both AirPods in the charging case and confirm that they are charging.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in Settings > Bluetooth.
- Close and reopen the charging-case lid near the iPhone.
- Follow the on-screen connection prompt.
- If AirPods were previously paired, forget them and retry the setup.
- Reset the AirPods according to Apple’s model-specific instructions.
Use Apple’s official AirPods troubleshooting steps for the reset procedure because the steps differ by AirPods generation. Do not assume that an AirPods-specific fix applies to third-party headphones.
How do hearing aids and specialized accessories pair?
Made for iPhone hearing devices may use Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices instead of ordinary Bluetooth pairing alone. Apple’s current hearing-device guide says some pairing processes can take up to 60 seconds, so do not cancel the process immediately if the device appears to be waiting.
Follow the hearing-device manufacturer’s instructions and contact the audiologist or manufacturer when a hearing aid requires a device-specific pairing or reset procedure. Trackers, smart-home devices, health products, and some automotive accessories may similarly require a companion app, permissions, an account, or a dedicated setup screen.

What is the difference between “not found,” “will not pair,” and “no sound”?
| Symptom | Likely causes | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Accessory never appears | Not in discovery mode, low battery, connected elsewhere, out of range, incompatible, or defective | Charge it, re-enter pairing mode, move closer, and disconnect other nearby devices |
| Accessory appears but fails to pair | Stale pairing, wrong PIN, another active connection, app requirement, compatibility, or firmware problem | Forget the device, restart both products, re-enter discovery mode, and pair again |
| Accessory pairs but disconnects | Low battery, distance, interference, multipoint switching, or firmware trouble | Charge it, move closer, disable competing connections, and check firmware |
| Accessory says connected but audio or data does not work | Wrong audio output, app problem, unsupported profile, or incomplete accessory setup | Check the active audio output and the accessory’s app or setup instructions |
| Only one app fails | Bluetooth permission or an app-specific problem | Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth and reopen or update the app |
| No Bluetooth devices work | iOS settings, software, or iPhone hardware problem | Restart, update iOS, test a known-good accessory, and contact Apple if the problem persists |
Should you restart the iPhone?
Yes. Restarting the iPhone and power-cycling the accessory are low-risk refreshes, although neither is a guaranteed repair. Turn the accessory off and on, restart the iPhone, return to Settings > Bluetooth, place the accessory into discovery mode, and try again.
Install any available iOS update and update the accessory’s firmware when the manufacturer supports that process. An update may improve compatibility or reliability, but do not assume that an unspecified iOS update contains a Bluetooth fix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should you do if the Bluetooth switch is grayed out?
A grayed-out Bluetooth switch is more serious than one missing accessory. Restart the iPhone, install any available iOS update, and test Bluetooth again from Settings > Bluetooth. If Bluetooth remains unavailable, or if no known-good accessory can connect, contact Apple Support.
Apple identifies an inability to turn Bluetooth on, including a grayed-out control, as a reason to seek support. A single missing accessory does not prove that the iPhone’s Bluetooth hardware is broken, but a complete failure across known-good accessories makes an iPhone software or hardware problem more plausible.
When should you reset network settings?
Reset Network Settings is a later-stage option, not a first Bluetooth fix. Consider it when broader Wi-Fi, cellular, VPN, or network-configuration problems accompany the Bluetooth issue, and understand that Apple does not present the reset as a guaranteed Bluetooth repair.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose Reset Network Settings.
The reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN-related network settings. Record important network information before using it. Apple lists the path and consequences in its iPhone reset settings guide and its network-settings support page.
What does Reset All Settings remove?
Reset All Settings is more directly relevant when persistent system preferences or pairing configuration appear corrupted, but use it only after the accessory-side checks, restart, update, permission check, and forget-and-re-pair steps fail.

According to Apple’s Reset All Settings documentation, the process does not delete photos, messages, apps, documents, or other personal media. The process does remove Bluetooth pairings and Wi-Fi networks and passwords, and it resets Apple Pay cards, privacy settings, VPN configurations, accessibility settings, and other preferences. You will need to pair Bluetooth accessories and reconnect networks afterward.
When should you contact Apple or the accessory maker?
Contact the accessory manufacturer when you need the correct discovery-mode button sequence, firmware instructions, compatibility confirmation, or factory-reset procedure. The manufacturer is also the right contact when the accessory fails to connect to any compatible phone.
Contact Apple Support when Bluetooth is grayed out, the iPhone cannot connect to any known-good Bluetooth accessory, or the issue continues after restarting, updating, forgetting and re-pairing, and checking the accessory. Apple’s Bluetooth support guidance treats those circumstances as escalation points.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf testing indicates an iPhone hardware fault, Apple’s official repair page is the appropriate starting point. Repair eligibility and pricing depend on the iPhone model, damage, warranty status, AppleCare coverage, and region, so no universal repair price applies.
Compact troubleshooting decision tree
| Start with this symptom | Do this first | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| The accessory does not appear at all | Charge it, put it into discovery mode, move it close, and disconnect nearby devices | The accessory is confirmed compatible and still cannot be found after restart and re-pairing |
| The accessory appears but will not connect | Forget the old pairing, restart both devices, check the PIN, and pair again | The accessory fails with the iPhone but works elsewhere, or its maker reports a firmware or compatibility issue |
| The accessory connects and drops | Charge it, move closer, disable multipoint competitors, and check firmware | The accessory also drops from other compatible devices |
| No Bluetooth accessory works | Restart, update iOS, and test a known-good accessory | Bluetooth is grayed out or remains unusable after these steps |
Current iOS menu wording can vary slightly by iOS version, region, and accessory type. The reliable order is to verify the full Bluetooth switch, make the accessory discoverable, supply power, remove competing connections, forget and re-pair old records, and only then consider disruptive iPhone resets or support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Bluetooth device not showing up on my iPhone?
A Bluetooth device usually does not appear because it is not in discovery or pairing mode, has low power, is connected to another nearby device, is out of range, or is incompatible. Put the accessory into its manufacturer-specified pairing mode, keep it within a few feet of the iPhone, disconnect other devices, and try again from Settings > Bluetooth.
Does turning Bluetooth off in Control Center fully disable Bluetooth on iPhone?
No. The Control Center Bluetooth button generally disconnects accessories but does not fully disable Bluetooth. Use Settings > Bluetooth to turn Bluetooth completely off or on.

No. Reset All Settings preserves personal photos, messages, apps, documents, and other media, but it removes Bluetooth pairings, Wi-Fi networks and passwords, Apple Pay cards, privacy settings, VPN configurations, and other preferences. Erase All Content and Settings is the separate full-wipe option.
Why does my Bluetooth accessory work with another phone but not my iPhone?
The accessory may still be connected to the other phone, may have a stale pairing record on the iPhone, or may require a specific app, permission, firmware version, or compatibility setup. Disconnect it elsewhere, forget it on the iPhone, restart both devices, and pair it again.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: iPhone Bluetooth not finding devices is usually solved by making the accessory explicitly discoverable, charging it, moving it close to the iPhone, disconnecting nearby devices, and pairing again from Settings > Bluetooth. If the accessory was previously paired, use Forget This Device before considering network or all-settings resets. If Bluetooth is grayed out or no known-good accessory works, contact Apple; if only one product fails, contact that product’s manufacturer.
