If your iPhone battery is draining too quickly, open Settings > Battery before switching features off. Check Battery Suggestions and Insights, then compare which apps and system activity used power. The five settings below are a troubleshooting checklist—not an official Apple ranking or a guarantee that each one is costing you battery. Change only what your own usage points to.
1. Check what used battery before changing settings
In Settings > Battery, review Battery Suggestions and Insights, then look at Daily Usage and App and System Activity Usage. Battery use depends on how you use your device and which apps you use, so your own activity is more useful than a universal list of “drains.” On iOS 26 or later, Daily Usage compares the current day with the previous seven days. Apple’s battery-drain guide explains these views.
Tap or inspect an app’s activity details for clues such as on-screen use, background activity, location tracking, notifications waking the phone, or poor cellular coverage. Those labels help narrow the next step; they do not prove that every app with background activity is unnecessary.
If you recently set up your iPhone or installed an iOS update, background tasks can temporarily affect battery life and temperature. Battery Insights may identify setup or update activity. Give the phone a few days, then check usage again before treating a temporary change as a persistent settings problem. Apple recommends checking again after that period.

2. Reduce screen brightness and check Auto-Brightness
A bright display can use substantial power. Dim the screen in Control Center or let Auto-Brightness adjust it to the ambient light. Apple may suggest a brightness change when it detects that the display is set higher than recommended; it does not mean every iPhone needs a brightness adjustment.
To check the feature, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. Apple says Auto-Brightness is on by default and uses the ambient light sensor. You can also adjust brightness manually in Control Center. The trade-off is visibility: a dimmer display may be harder to read in bright surroundings. 3. Shorten Auto-Lock if the display stays on while idle
If you often set the phone down without locking it, a shorter Auto-Lock interval can prevent the display from remaining on unnecessarily. Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose a shorter interval that still suits how you read or use the phone. The available controls can vary with software version or device-management settings.

This is most relevant when your battery activity or habits point to long periods of screen-on time. A shorter interval may interrupt reading or other tasks when you pause, so there is no need to change it if the current setting fits your use. Apple notes that Low Power Mode sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds. Battery suggestions and settings provide further context.
4. Restrict Background App Refresh selectively
Background App Refresh lets suspended apps check for new content. If Battery usage identifies an app doing unnecessary background work—or you do not need an app’s content to update before you open it—review Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Depending on the app and your settings, you can turn refresh off, allow it on Wi-Fi, or allow it on Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.
Turning refresh off for an app can make its content less current until you open it. Keep it enabled where timely background updates matter to you; there is no reason to disable it across the board without evidence it is relevant. Apple describes the feature in its guide to switching apps.

Do not force-quit every app as a battery fix. Apple says closing all apps does not improve overall performance when battery life drains quickly; apps generally use resources while active or performing a specific background task or service. Apple’s app-switching guidance explains the distinction.
5. Review location access and notifications for the app involved
Battery details may identify location tracking as background activity or show that notifications woke the device. If a particular app stands out, decide whether it needs location access or frequent alerts to do its job. Adjust that app’s location permission or notification settings only if the activity is unnecessary for you.
Location access can be important for navigation, safety, or tracking, and notifications may deliver alerts you want promptly. Disabling Location Services or all notifications can remove useful functions, and Apple does not quantify a universal battery saving from changing a specific permission. Start with the app and activity shown in Settings > Battery, rather than turning off permissions globally. 6. Use Low Power Mode when you need a temporary bundle of changes
Low Power Mode is a system-wide way to reduce power use, not a single hidden switch. On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery and turn on Low Power Mode.
It reduces or pauses several activities and effects, including Background App Refresh, email fetch, automatic downloads, some visual effects, brightness, and iCloud Photos syncing. Some tasks may run more slowly, and background updates may be less timely. Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the charge rises above 80%. Weak cellular coverage
Battery details can identify low or no cellular coverage as a contributor. Using Wi-Fi or moving to a stronger signal can help when practical; if you will be without coverage for a while, Airplane Mode is an option if you do not need a connection. On iPhone 12 and later, iPhone SE (3rd generation), and compatible 5G iPads, Apple describes 5G Auto as a Smart Data option that switches to LTE when 5G does not noticeably improve the experience. Adaptive Power on supported models
Adaptive Power is available with iOS 26 or later on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple says it is on by default on iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, but off by default on iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 Pro models. It needs at least seven days to learn charging habits. When it detects higher-than-usual use, it can slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, make performance adjustments, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20%. Battery condition
Settings changes cannot restore a worn battery. If Battery Health displays Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple’s battery-drain guidance explains this service indicator.
