For music, start with the Music app’s EQ and Sound Check; for calls, try Voice Isolation when you want your voice prioritized over background noise. Other settings—such as headphone tuning, Mono Audio and stereo balance—are useful for particular listening needs, not universal sound upgrades. The right setup depends on your headphones, hearing preferences, iPhone model and the app you’re using.
1. Choose an EQ setting for Apple Music playback
On iOS 26, open Settings > Apps > Music > EQ, then select a preset or choose Off. EQ changes the tonal balance of music in Apple’s Music app; it is not a system-wide equalizer for every audio app. Apple describes the control but does not designate a best preset.
Compare a preset with Off using a familiar track at a comfortable volume. Keep the setting that suits your listening preference, and remember that it may not affect music played in other apps. Apple’s iOS 26 Music audio settings guide explains EQ.

2. Turn on Sound Check if playback volume varies
In Settings > Apps > Music, turn on Sound Check. It normalizes playback volume in Music, helping reduce level differences between tracks. It adjusts loudness consistency; it does not promise extra detail or higher fidelity.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Use it if switching songs brings noticeable volume changes. If you prefer each recording’s original level differences, leave it off. Sound Check is a Music setting, not a general iPhone volume control. Apple documents it alongside EQ in its Music audio settings guide.
3. Tune supported headphones with Headphone Accommodations
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations and turn on the feature when using supported Apple or Beats headphones. It can amplify soft sounds and adjust certain frequencies. Compatibility depends on the headphone model, so check support for your specific pair rather than assuming every Bluetooth headphone works.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with Lightning Connector also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a Lightning connector and support iOS 10 or later, including iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone. Also works with iPad models with iPadOS.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Choose whether the accommodations apply to Phone, Media, or both. Phone targets calls; Media targets music and other media. This lets you tune one listening context without necessarily applying the same treatment to the other.
Beats tuning options
For supported Beats headphones, Apple lists three tuning choices: Balanced Tone, Vocal Range, and Brightness. You can also select Slight, Moderate, or Strong amplification. These are personal adjustment controls, not a guaranteed improvement for every listener. See Apple’s Beats Headphone Accommodations guide for supported options.

Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
- MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
4. Enable Mono Audio only when you need combined channels
Find Mono Audio under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual. When enabled, the left and right speakers play the same content, combining the stereo channels. This can help when you need the channels together, but it removes left/right stereo separation and is not a general music-quality improvement.
5. Adjust Stereo Audio Balance for an uneven left-right experience
In Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual, use the Balance slider to shift audio left or right. It can help if sound seems louder on one side or you have an asymmetric listening need. The centered position is the neutral starting point; move it only if you have a reason to shift the stereo image.

Mono Audio and Balance address different needs: Mono combines the channels, while Balance shifts their relative position. Apple describes both in its iPhone audio settings guide.

Apple documents Phone Noise Cancellation as available and on by default on iPhone 12 and earlier. The setting uses air pressure to reduce ambient background noise when you hold the receiver to your ear. On an eligible model, find it under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual and toggle it if needed.

This setting concerns what you hear through the receiver. It is not the same as Voice Isolation, which changes microphone processing for a supported call or app. Apple’s audio settings guide documents the model limit.
7. Use Voice Isolation when you want your voice prioritized on a call
During a supported call, open Control Center, tap the controls for the app you are using, then choose Voice Isolation under Audio & Video or Mic Mode, depending on the interface. Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise. The available modes and labels depend on the iOS version and app.
Choose a microphone mode for the situation
- Voice Isolation: Use it when reducing surrounding noise matters more than retaining it in the call.
- Wide Spectrum: Leaves ambient sound unfiltered. Apple says it is not available for phone calls.
- Automatic: Selects a mode based on the call situation; this option requires iOS 18 or later.
Eligibility varies: Voice Isolation for phone calls requires iOS 16.4 or later. FaceTime and certain third-party apps support Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum on iOS 15 or later. Automatic Mic Mode requires iOS 18 or later. The selected mode applies to the app in use and persists for that app until you change it; it does not automatically set the mode for every calling app. Apple lists behavior and requirements in its microphone mode support guide.
Quick Recap
Which settings should you change first?
- For Apple Music, try EQ presets against Off and enable Sound Check if track-to-track volume differences bother you.
- For supported headphones, use Headphone Accommodations to tune Phone, Media or both to your needs.
- Use Mono Audio or Balance only when combining channels or shifting the stereo image addresses a real listening need.
- On iPhone 12 and earlier, Phone Noise Cancellation is a receiver-listening feature; for supported calls, Voice Isolation is the microphone option for suppressing background sound.
