To get alerts from an app on your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, and turn on Allow Notifications. Then choose where alerts appear and whether they make a sound. If alerts arrive late or seem silent, check Scheduled Summary, Focus, and the iPhone’s sound settings.
Turn on alerts for an iPhone app
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Under Notification Style, select the app you want to change.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose whether alerts appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or as banners. You can select more than one location when the options are available.
- Set any other options shown, such as sounds, badges, previews, or notification types. Some apps also provide a shortcut to their own notification settings.
Options vary by app and software version. Apple’s notification settings guide describes the available controls.

Choose when alerts arrive
Use Scheduled Summary for less urgent notifications
Scheduled Summary groups notifications from selected apps and presents them at times you choose, rather than delivering each notification as it arrives.
- Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.
- Turn on Scheduled Summary and set the times you want to receive summaries.
- Select the apps to include.
If an app does not appear in the list, first enable Allow Notifications for it. Apple explains Scheduled Summary in its guide to viewing and responding to notifications.

Check Focus when alerts are delayed or silenced
Focus can silence notifications or limit them to chosen apps while it is active. To review its rules, open Settings > Focus, choose the active Focus, and inspect which apps are allowed or silenced. Where supported, you can also allow time-sensitive notifications. Apple’s instructions are in Allow or silence notifications for a Focus.
Control alert appearance, previews, and privacy
In Settings > Notifications > [app], choose the alert locations and options that suit you. Depending on the app, you may be able to show a preview Always, When Unlocked, or Never. When the preview setting is available, showing it only when unlocked can keep message contents off the Lock Screen while still letting you see the alert.

iPhone also offers Lock Screen notification layouts called Count, Stack, and List. These control how notifications are arranged, not whether an app is allowed to send them. For details on layouts and previews, see Apple’s guide to changing notification settings.

- On the Lock Screen: Swipe up from the middle of the screen to open Notification Center.
- On another screen: Swipe down from the top center of the display.
- Open or act on an alert: Tap a notification to open its app, or touch and hold it to see any quick actions offered.

Fix alerts that are silent or not arriving as expected
- The app is not allowed to notify you: Open Settings > Notifications > [app] and check Allow Notifications, alert locations, and the app’s available alert options.
- Alerts appear in a batch: Check whether the app is included in Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and review the scheduled delivery times.
- Alerts stop during certain activities: Open Settings > Focus and review the active Focus’s allowed and silenced apps.
- Alerts appear but make no sound: Check the iPhone’s silent mode and volume, as well as the app’s sound setting. Apple Support states, “If your phone is silenced or the volume is turned down completely, notification sounds will not play.” See Use notifications on your iPhone or iPad.
Set special alerts for messages and important contacts
Messages can have their own sound and vibration controls. For a particular contact, open that person’s contact card, tap Edit, then review Ringtone or Text Tone. Apple’s message notification instructions explain how to change these settings.
If you want a contact’s sounds and vibrations to come through when the iPhone or notifications are silenced, Apple provides Emergency Bypass in that contact’s Ringtone or Text Tone settings. This is separate from Focus: Focus can also be configured to allow calls from emergency contacts while notifications are silenced. Review the person’s contact settings and the relevant Focus rules before relying on either option.

Check government alerts in your region
Open Settings > Notifications and scroll to Government Alerts, if that section is available. The controls and alert categories depend on your country or region, carrier, and iPhone model. Apple lists National Alerts and AMBER, Public Safety, and Emergency Alerts for the United States; those categories should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. In supported contexts, an Always Play Sound option may be available for Emergency Alerts. See Apple’s regional notification settings guidance. Do not rely on an iPhone as your only source of emergency information.
