Choose Apple if you value an unlocked phone and flexibility; choose a carrier only after checking whether its credits beat the plan and commitment costs you would actually take on. In the U.S., Apple lists iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199, while carrier promotions advertise up to $1,200 off for qualifying buyers. Those advertised maximums are conditional, and no single route is cheapest for everyone.

What Apple and carriers are offering

Apple’s U.S. store lists iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199 and a “Connect on your own later” purchase route. Apple says iPhones bought with Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) are unlocked, subject to approval and program terms; taxes and shipping are not included in the 0% ACMI balance. Verify that checkout is offering ACMI, rather than carrier device financing, if unlocked status is important to you. Apple Store · Apple Newsroom

Carrier advertisements can show larger discounts than Apple’s direct trade-in credit, but the maximums depend on the plan, trade-in, line status and financing terms. The figures below are published offer maxima, not guaranteed savings for every account. The offers were published in 2026 and can change; confirm the terms at checkout.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Deep Blue- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

How to compare the real cost

Compare the whole arrangement over the period you expect to keep service—not just the phone’s advertised price. A carrier credit may look generous but arrive monthly over an installment term; its value to you depends on whether you stay eligible long enough to receive it and whether the required plan is one you would choose anyway.

  1. Start with the plan you would actually keep. Compare its cost with the service you would otherwise use over the same period. Include any line or plan change required to qualify for the promotion.
  2. Subtract only credits you can qualify for. Check the exact trade-in model and condition rules, whether a new line or switch is required, and how credits are applied. Do not treat the advertised maximum as cash off at purchase.
  3. Account for the full device payment and credit schedule. Note the installment term and when credits arrive. If you leave, change plans or pay off the device early, check the offer’s complete terms rather than assuming the remaining credits continue.
  4. Add taxes and fees. Apple says taxes and shipping are excluded from the 0% ACMI balance; check what is due at checkout for each route, along with applicable service taxes and fees.
  5. Value flexibility and your trade-in separately. Compare Apple’s instant trade-in offer with the carrier’s promotion, but don’t treat them as interchangeable: eligibility and credit timing differ. Include the value of keeping an unlocked phone and avoiding a plan or line commitment if that matters to you.

There is no universal winner without your current plan, trade-in phone, line status and financing eligibility. A carrier promotion can be compelling if you already want its qualifying plan and expect to stay through the credit period. Apple’s direct route can make more sense when you prioritize an unlocked phone, want to choose service separately, or would have to spend more on a plan or line change to earn the carrier credits.

Which route fits your situation?

Buy from Apple if flexibility is the priority

  • You want to choose or change carriers independently of the phone purchase.
  • You qualify for ACMI and want Apple’s stated unlocked purchase route.
  • Your carrier’s plan, new-line requirement or credit period would not suit your expected use.
  • Apple’s quoted trade-in and the value of avoiding carrier-specific conditions compare favorably for your circumstances.

Consider a carrier offer if you meet its terms

  • You already use—or genuinely want—the qualifying plan and can meet the trade-in and line conditions.
  • You expect to keep the eligible service and installment arrangement through the period needed to receive the credits.
  • The monthly plan cost and any required account changes still make sense when compared with your alternative service cost.

Check eSIM and activation before checkout

Apple says U.S. iPhone 18 Pro models are eSIM-only. Apple reports eSIM support from more than 500 carriers worldwide, including the major U.S. carriers, but that does not establish that every plan or travel arrangement will work for you. Confirm activation with the specific carrier and check how you will connect while traveling before buying. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement

Verify the offer before committing

Carrier promotions and trade-in values are volatile. Before placing an order, review the current checkout summary and full offer terms for your account. Confirm the qualifying plan, trade-in, line requirements, installment length, credit schedule and what happens if you cancel, switch plans or pay off the device early. Published announcements establish headline conditions, but not every account-specific outcome.
