If your iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max restarts after Face ID fails to authenticate, update to iOS 27.0.1 or a later available iOS version. Apple’s release notes identify that specific restart behavior as fixed in iOS 27.0.1. The update is not a confirmed fix for every cause of an iPhone reboot.
What kind of iPhone 18 Pro restart does the update address?
Apple’s iOS 27.0.1 release notes list unexpected restarts on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max when Face ID fails to authenticate among the issues fixed by the update. The reported sequence was a failed Face ID challenge, a freeze or unresponsive phone, and then a restart; early reports also described it happening when Face ID was used in protected apps.
That connection matters: Apple documents a particular Face ID-related trigger, not a general remedy for any iPhone that reboots unexpectedly. The release notes do not state the underlying engineering cause or how many owners experienced the issue.

- Connect the iPhone to power and a Wi-Fi network, then check for an available iOS update using Apple’s current instructions for updating an iPhone.
- Install iOS 27.0.1 if it is offered, or install a later available iOS update. Follow the prompts on the phone and allow it to restart when installation is complete.
- After updating, use the phone normally and note whether an unexpected restart follows a failed Face ID attempt. Do not deliberately trigger repeated Face ID failures to test the problem.
Apple’s security releases listing records iOS 27.0.1 as released on September 28, 2026, for iPhone 11 and later. The consulted listing is Apple’s Saudi Arabia English page; availability of a newer update can vary by device and region. See Apple’s security releases.

What to do if your iPhone keeps restarting
| What you observe | Next step |
|---|---|
| The restart followed a failed Face ID attempt and the phone is still on an older iOS version. | Install iOS 27.0.1 or a later available update; Apple lists this specific behavior as fixed there. |
| The phone restarts after updating, or the restart happens during unrelated activity. | Use Apple’s unexpected restart troubleshooting guidance and contact Apple Support if the issue persists. |
| The phone repeatedly restarts, freezes, or shuts down and needs device-specific evaluation. | Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Repair Manual includes troubleshooting for unexpected freeze, restart, or shutdown issues. Follow Apple’s guidance or arrange support rather than assuming the software fix applies. |
A persistent boot loop or reboots unrelated to Face ID may have a different cause. Apple’s update notes do not establish that iOS 27.0.1 addresses those symptoms. A replacement phone is not the standard remedy for the documented Face ID-related bug; seek service or hardware evaluation if Apple’s troubleshooting indicates it or the restarts continue.
