If Face ID is not working on your iPhone 18 Pro, install the latest iOS update, check that Face ID is enabled for the feature you’re using, and make sure nothing blocks the TrueDepth camera. Then restart the phone and try again. If recognition still fails, reset Face ID and set it up again. Apple’s iOS 27.0.1 notes also document a fix for an issue that could make iPhone 18 Pro models unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate—but that fix does not establish that every Face ID problem is software-related.
1. Update iOS first, especially if the phone restarts
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest version offered for your iPhone. Apple’s iOS 27.0.1 release notes, dated September 29, 2026, say the update fixes an issue in which iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate.
This is a specific fix for the restart behavior. Apple does not say that iOS 27.0.1 resolves every recognition failure or a Face ID setup problem.
2. Confirm Face ID is set up and enabled for the feature
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode. Check that Face ID is configured and that the relevant option is enabled, such as iPhone Unlock, purchases, or app authentication. If only one app or action is affected, check its corresponding Face ID setting rather than assuming Face ID is unavailable everywhere.

3. Clear the TrueDepth camera area
Apple locates the iPhone 18 Pro’s TrueDepth camera at the top of the phone, toward the left corner. A smudge, case, or screen protector that covers the camera can interfere with recognition.
- Wipe away any visible smudge on the exposed camera area.
- Temporarily remove a case or screen protector if it could obstruct that area. Apple specifically recommends removing a privacy screen protector while troubleshooting the new camera.
- In landscape orientation, check that your finger or palm is not covering the camera.
If a smudge is visible, a microfiber lens-cleaning cloth is an optional way to clean the exposed surface. It will not fix a software fault, failed setup, or damaged camera.

4. Make your face visible to Face ID
For standard Face ID, Apple says your eyes, nose, and mouth should be fully visible. Test without sunglasses, particularly sunglasses designed to block certain types of light. If you are wearing a mask, adjust or remove it if it sits too high or too close to your eyes. Apple also suggests removing heavy makeup or a beauty mask and avoiding strong backlight, such as direct sunlight behind you.

Hold the iPhone at arm’s length or closer; Apple gives a typical Face ID range of 10–20 inches. Face ID works in portrait and landscape on iPhone 13 and later with iOS 16 or later. Face ID with a mask works only in portrait orientation.

5. Restart the iPhone, then reset Face ID if needed
- Restart your iPhone.
- Enter your passcode after it turns back on, then test Face ID.
- If it still fails, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID.
- Set up Face ID again and test the feature that was failing.
6. Know when to seek service
Contact Apple or a trained technician if Face ID setup repeatedly asks you to move your face into the frame but never advances, or if the camera is not working and you cannot set up Face ID. Apple says service may be needed in these cases and advises that only a trained technician service the device.
Do not attempt a TrueDepth camera repair yourself. Apple warns: “Improper repair, modification, or use of nongenuine Apple components in the laser systems might prevent the safety mechanisms from functioning properly, and could cause hazardous exposure and injury to eyes or skin.”

Which troubleshooting step fits your symptom?
