In the U.S., the iPhone 17 launched at $799 for 256GB, while the Galaxy S25 Edge launched at $1,099.99 for 256GB—a $300.99 difference at launch. The Edge offers a larger 6.7-inch display and a thinner, lighter body; the iPhone 17 is smaller and has two 48MP rear cameras. These are launch prices, not a statement of today’s price gap.

Apple lists the iPhone 17’s display and device specifications on its iPhone 17 technical specifications page. Samsung lists the S25 Edge’s price and hardware in its U.S. launch announcement.
Which is cheaper, and how large is the price difference?
At U.S. launch, the iPhone 17 cost $799 with 256GB of storage. Samsung listed the Galaxy S25 Edge at $1,099.99 for 256GB and $1,219.99 for 512GB. Comparing the two 256GB entry models, the Edge launched $300.99 higher. Apple announced its price on September 9, 2025; Samsung announced its prices on May 12, 2025. These figures are launch prices, not current retailer quotes, and prices in other countries differ.

For a purchase today, compare the same storage capacity and equivalent unlocked or carrier terms in your country. A discount can change the practical price gap; the launch-price difference alone cannot establish which is better value now.

How much bigger is the Galaxy S25 Edge?
The Edge’s display is 0.4 inches larger diagonally: 6.7 inches versus 6.3 inches on the iPhone 17. Samsung specifies a QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 1–120Hz refresh rate; Apple specifies an OLED Super Retina XDR display with adaptive ProMotion up to 120Hz. The listed refresh-rate ranges do not by themselves establish which screen looks better in everyday use.
The Edge is also wider and taller: 75.6 × 158.2mm compared with 71.5 × 149.6mm for the iPhone 17. But it is thinner and lighter on the listed figures—5.8mm and 163g versus 7.95mm and 177g. Samsung’s thickness measurement excludes the camera lenses. That makes the Edge slimmer and lighter, but not the smaller phone overall.

Does the iPhone 17 have a better camera?
The published rear-camera specifications differ, but they do not prove a photo-quality winner. The iPhone 17 has a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide. The S25 Edge has a 200MP main camera with optical image stabilization, a 12MP ultrawide, and 2x “optical quality” zoom from its main camera. Megapixel counts describe sensor resolution, not the complete image result. A reliable quality comparison would require comparable photos and testing conditions; the listed specifications alone do not provide that.
Battery, charging, and performance
Samsung specifies a typical battery capacity of 3,900mAh and says the S25 Edge can charge by wire to up to 55% in around 30 minutes using a 25W adapter, sold separately. Apple’s cited iPhone 17 specification page does not give a comparable mAh figure. Those disclosures cannot establish which phone lasts longer, and the stated charging figure is tied to Samsung’s specified adapter and conditions.

The iPhone 17 uses Apple’s A19 chip, while the S25 Edge uses Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy. Manufacturer launch materials do not provide a head-to-head benchmark or sustained-performance result, so these chip names are not enough to rank speed, gaming performance, or heat under load.

- Choose the iPhone 17 if you prefer a smaller display and body, want the iOS platform, or the lower U.S. launch price is relevant to your budget. Its two rear cameras are both listed at 48MP, but that does not guarantee better photos.
- Choose the Galaxy S25 Edge if you want a larger 6.7-inch screen, prioritize a thinner and lighter handset, prefer Android, or value its specified 2x “optical quality” zoom feature.
- Compare current offers before deciding if price is the deciding factor. Use equivalent storage and purchase terms; the launch prices do not reveal the phones’ current cost.
For either phone, choose based on the combination of screen size, physical dimensions, platform preference, camera features, and the price available to you. The published specs support those distinctions, but they do not settle screen quality, camera quality, battery life, or real-world performance without comparable tests.
