The refurbished iPhone 16 Pro is the better value if you can buy an Apple Certified Refurbished unit at a meaningful same-storage discount and do not need the iPhone 17 Pro’s newer cameras, battery rating, or connectivity. Choose the iPhone 17 Pro if those upgrades matter enough to justify its local price premium. There is no universal break-even price: compare the models’ checkout prices, storage, and warranty terms where you live.
Compare the price you will actually pay
Apple’s US refurbished store showed an unlocked 256GB iPhone 16 Pro for $849 when checked on October 9, 2026. That is a dated listing snapshot, not a guaranteed current price or a direct comparison with an unspecified iPhone 17 Pro price. Apple says refurbished supplies are limited. Check the live listing and terms before buying.
Compare the same storage capacity and the final checkout price in your market. Local retailer discounts, trade-ins, carrier plans, financing, and regional stock can all change the gap. Apple’s refurbished program advertises savings of up to 15% across the program; that is a maximum, not the established discount on the specific 16 Pro listing.

When the refurbished iPhone 16 Pro is the better value
Choose the 16 Pro when the saving is substantial at your actual checkout and the refurbisher’s condition and protections are clear. Apple says its certified refurbished iPhones are fully functional after testing; the specific 16 Pro listing states it includes a new battery and outer shell, the same one-year limited warranty as a new iPhone, and a 14-day return period.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The 16 Pro remains a Pro camera phone: Apple’s listing highlights a 48MP Ultra Wide camera and 4K 120 fps Dolby Vision recording. Its 6.3-inch OLED display also shares the 17 Pro’s listed resolution and ProMotion refresh-rate ceiling. If you do not need the 17 Pro’s specific camera, battery, or wireless upgrades, paying less for the older model can make better financial sense.
When it is worth paying more for the iPhone 17 Pro
The 17 Pro is easier to justify if you will use its newer features regularly or plan to keep the phone for years. Apple lists an A19 Pro chip, three 48MP rear cameras including telephoto, 4× telephoto and 8× optical-quality zoom, an 18MP Center Stage front camera, Wi-Fi 7, and higher maximum video playback ratings than the 16 Pro.

Apple also lists a higher outdoor peak brightness for the 17 Pro and a different construction: aluminum with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, rather than the 16 Pro’s titanium and textured matte glass. These are specification differences, not proof that every buyer will prefer the newer materials or notice each upgrade.
Check SIM and refurbishment terms before checkout
If you rely on a physical SIM
Apple’s 17 Pro specifications explicitly say the phone is not compatible with physical SIM cards. Verify that your carrier supports eSIM on the exact regional model before buying, particularly if you travel or routinely move a physical SIM between devices.

If you are buying refurbished
Apple’s stated battery, outer-shell, warranty, and return protections apply to Apple Certified Refurbished stock. For another seller, verify its own terms rather than assuming they match Apple’s. Check battery health or replacement policy, warranty length, return window, activation or carrier lock, and parts or repair history.
