The iPhone 17 Pro is a conventional 6.3-inch phone; Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is a foldable with a 6.5-inch cover screen and an 8-inch main display when opened. The choice is less about which spec sheet wins and more about whether that larger workspace is worth the higher price and bulk for you.

At a glance: iPhone 17 Pro vs Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra

Category Apple iPhone 17 Pro Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
Form factor and displays Conventional phone with a 6.3-inch display, according to PhoneArena’s comparison. Foldable with a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch main display, according to Samsung Australia.
Weight 206 g, per PhoneArena. 215 g, per Samsung.
Battery capacity 4,252 mAh, per PhoneArena. 5,000 mAh, per Samsung.
Rear cameras Triple-camera system listed by PhoneArena; the comparison does not establish a like-for-like camera result. 200 MP wide, 50 MP ultrawide and 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, per Samsung.
Software iOS. Android 17 and One UI 9, per Samsung Australia.
Stylus support Not assessed in the cited comparison. Samsung says the device does not support S Pen.

These figures describe different designs and platforms, not a controlled performance comparison. In particular, battery capacity does not tell you how long either phone lasts, and camera megapixels do not establish which takes better photos.

What is the actual price difference?

For the 256GB models, PhoneArena lists launch MSRPs of $1,099 for the iPhone 17 Pro and $2,099 for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. That is a $1,000 difference between those listed launch prices. It is not a guaranteed comparison of current checkout prices, and the cited figures are not a quote in every local currency.

Samsung’s US product page lists the Fold8 Ultra from $2,099.99 before trade-in. Samsung also advertises trade-in and carrier offers on that page, so an eligible buyer’s final price can vary with region, offer terms and timing. Check the price for the same storage tier in your market before deciding. Samsung Australia says the Fold8 Ultra was unveiled on July 22, 2026, and is available to buy in Australia; availability and offers are regional.

Which form factor makes more sense?

Choose the iPhone for a conventional handset

The iPhone 17 Pro keeps the familiar single-screen phone format. At 206 g, it is also 9 g lighter than Samsung’s listed Fold8 Ultra weight. That modest difference does not by itself determine comfort, but it matters if you prefer a conventional phone that you do not need to open to get its main display.

Choose the Fold for the expanded screen

The Fold8 Ultra’s main advantage is its 8-inch display when unfolded, alongside a 6.5-inch cover screen for use while closed. That gives you more screen area for tasks that benefit from a larger canvas. Display size alone cannot tell you how a particular app behaves or whether its interface suits your workflow, so consider the apps and tasks you actually use.

How should you compare battery and cameras?

Samsung lists a 5,000 mAh battery and claims up to 27 hours of video playback for the Fold8 Ultra under its stated test conditions. That is a manufacturer figure, not an independent head-to-head result. The iPhone’s listed capacity is 4,252 mAh, but comparing those capacities—or Samsung’s playback claim with an unrelated test—would not establish which phone lasts longer in your day.

Samsung specifies a 200 MP wide camera, 50 MP ultrawide camera and 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. PhoneArena lists a triple-camera setup for the iPhone 17 Pro. The available specifications do not establish comparative photo or video quality; sensor resolution alone is not a reliable way to choose between them.

Software, generation and compatibility details

The iPhone runs iOS, while Samsung lists Android 17 and One UI 9 for the Fold8 Ultra. Your existing devices, services and preferred operating system are practical decision factors; the specifications do not make one ecosystem objectively better for every buyer. The Fold8 Ultra is a 2026 release, while the iPhone 17 Pro is from an earlier generation, so compare current local availability and the software-support information published for each model if longevity is a priority.

Do not assume the Fold8 Ultra supports Samsung’s S Pen: Samsung’s US product FAQ states, “Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra does not support S Pen.” That statement does not establish support for third-party styluses.

How to decide between them

  • Pick the iPhone 17 Pro if you want the conventional phone format, prefer iOS, or do not expect to use a foldable’s larger internal screen enough to justify its listed launch-price premium.
  • Pick the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if the ability to open the phone to an 8-inch display is central to how you work or use apps, and you are comfortable with its greater weight and higher listed launch MSRP.
  • Before buying either, compare the same storage capacity and local currency, check the current price after only the offers you actually qualify for, and decide whether your camera, battery and app needs are answered by evidence beyond headline specifications.
