The iPhone 18 Pro Max is Apple’s newer flagship, with an A20 Pro chip, 256GB–2TB storage options and a US starting price of $1,299. The iPhone 16 Pro Max remains a capable large-screen model, but a fair price comparison depends on matching country, storage and current seller pricing: the available launch-price figures are from different markets and cannot be subtracted meaningfully.
iPhone 16 Pro Max vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: specifications at a glance

What’s different between the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Chip and performance
The 18 Pro Max uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip. The facts available here do not establish a measured speed difference between the two models, so a specific performance percentage or claim about real-world gains would be unsupported. If demanding apps, games or long-term software support matter most, compare independent tests for the exact tasks you use rather than treating the chip name alone as a benchmark.

Apple lists a 6.9-inch OLED screen and 249g weight for the 18 Pro Max. A directly comparable 16 Pro Max display resolution, dimensions or weight is not established in the cited facts, so these figures alone do not prove that the newer model is larger, sharper or lighter. Consider the 18 Pro Max’s size and weight in person if one-handed use or pocket comfort matters.

Battery and charging
For the 16 Pro Max, Apple’s published playback figures are ceilings under its stated test conditions, not a promise of the runtime every owner will see. Streaming, signal strength, display settings and app use affect actual battery life. The available figures do not provide an equivalent 18 Pro Max battery comparison, so they cannot show whether the newer phone lasts longer.
The 16 Pro Max supports USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gb/s, MagSafe charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W-or-higher adapter, and Qi2 charging up to 15W. The cited 18 Pro Max facts do not establish comparable charging or transfer rates. If you rely on fast wireless charging or regularly move large files by cable, verify those details against Apple’s full specifications before choosing.

Storage and water resistance
Apple lists the 18 Pro Max in four capacities, from 256GB to 2TB. Choose a capacity based on the photos, video, apps and offline files you expect to keep locally; cloud storage does not replace local space when you need files available without a connection. The evidence here does not list the 16 Pro Max capacity options, so compare the exact configurations offered where you plan to buy.
The 18 Pro Max’s IP68 rating describes controlled testing, not a guarantee against liquid damage in everyday use. Water resistance can diminish over time, and Apple does not describe it as permanent. Treat water exposure as a risk rather than a feature to rely on.

What is the price difference?
A valid numerical price difference is not established by these launch figures. Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro Max at a starting price of ¥189,800 in Japan in 2024, while Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max at US$1,299 in the United States in 2026. Different currencies and markets make a direct subtraction misleading; the figures also differ by announcement date and may not represent the same storage configuration.
For a useful comparison, check prices in your country on the same date and match storage capacity. Separate the manufacturer’s launch price from a retailer’s current sale price, a carrier installment total and a trade-in-adjusted offer. Apple’s 2026 announcement mentions selected carrier and trade-in offers, but eligibility and value depend on their terms; do not assume an advertised credit applies to every buyer.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max worth upgrading to?
The answer depends on what you need and the price you can actually get for each model. The 18 Pro Max is the clear choice if you want Apple’s newer A20 Pro chip, a 2TB storage option, or the listed 6.9-inch OLED display and its documented water-resistance rating. The supplied specifications do not establish a measured performance gain, longer battery life or a same-market price premium over the 16 Pro Max.
