The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the better fit if you want a large screen that opens into an 8-inch workspace; the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a conventional phone with a 6.9-inch display and a longer-zoom 5x telephoto camera. Both offer 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options. Samsung lists the Fold8 Ultra from $2,099.99 before trade-in in the US, but the available price evidence does not establish a current, like-for-like price difference against the iPhone.
What is the difference between iPhone 16 Pro Max and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra?
The biggest difference is the form factor. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is a standard smartphone; the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra opens from a 6.5-inch cover screen to an 8-inch inner screen. That trade-off affects how you read, multitask, watch video, and use the phone one-handed. The models also differ in camera hardware, processor, weight, and battery specifications.

Specifications are from Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro Max specifications, Samsung’s launch specifications, and Samsung’s US product page. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is a 2024 model; Samsung’s Fold8 Ultra product materials are from 2026, so these are not same-year launches.
Which has the bigger screen?
The Fold8 Ultra has the biggest screen when opened: its inner display measures 8.0 inches, compared with the iPhone’s 6.9-inch display. Folded, the Samsung offers a 6.5-inch cover display. The iPhone’s single display is larger than that cover screen, but it does not unfold into a tablet-like surface.
#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Choose based on how you use the screen, not diagonal measurements alone. The Fold8 Ultra’s inner display gives more room for reading, viewing media, and working across apps; its cover display supports use without unfolding. The iPhone keeps the same conventional phone format whether you are browsing or taking a call.
How do the cameras compare?
Apple lists a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide, and a 12MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. Samsung lists a 200MP wide camera, a 50MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP telephoto with 3x zoom. In practical terms, the listed telephoto specifications give the iPhone the longer optical zoom reach, while Samsung’s main camera has a higher stated megapixel count.

Those numbers do not establish which phone takes better photos. Megapixel counts and lens specifications alone cannot determine image quality across lighting, motion, processing, or video. The cited sources do not provide an independent head-to-head camera test.

How much more does the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra cost?
Samsung’s US product page lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra starting at $2,099.99 before trade-in. That is a US starting price, not a same-date, same-storage comparison with the iPhone. The Apple specifications page does not establish a current iPhone 16 Pro Max transaction price, so an exact price gap cannot be stated from these figures.

What do the battery figures mean?
Apple states up to 33 hours of video playback for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Samsung lists a 5,000mAh typical battery capacity and up to 27 hours of video playback for the Fold8 Ultra. These are manufacturer figures, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. Different testing methods and usage conditions mean the playback estimates should not be treated as a direct battery-life verdict.
Best Value
- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
Which phone should you choose?
- Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if opening the phone to an 8-inch display is more valuable to you than keeping a conventional phone shape, or if you want its stated 200MP main camera and foldable form.
- Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max if you prefer a traditional smartphone display, want the listed 5x telephoto rather than 3x, or are already invested in Apple’s ecosystem.
- Compare carefully before buying if price is decisive: verify the same storage tier, region, seller, and purchase date rather than subtracting the Samsung US starting price from an unrelated iPhone listing.
