The iPhone 16 Pro Max is Apple’s 2024 large-screen Pro smartphone. It pairs a 6.9-inch OLED display with an A18 Pro chip, a titanium design, Camera Control, and a rear camera system with 48MP Fusion, 48MP Ultra Wide, and 12MP 5x Telephoto cameras. Apple announced the model on September 9, 2024; preorders opened September 13, and availability began September 20, 2024. Apple’s launch announcement and technical specifications identify its features and configuration.
What the name means
“iPhone 16 Pro Max” identifies the largest model in Apple’s 2024 iPhone 16 Pro line. “Pro” denotes its higher-end chip and camera hardware within that lineup; “Max” distinguishes its larger display and body. Apple’s launch announcement lists a 6.3-inch display for iPhone 16 Pro and a 6.9-inch display for iPhone 16 Pro Max. That size distinction does not, on its own, describe every difference between the two models.
What defines the iPhone 16 Pro Max
Large OLED display
Apple specifies a 6.9-inch diagonal Super Retina XDR OLED display, with a resolution of 2868 by 1320 pixels at 460 ppi and ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. The 6.9-inch measurement is diagonal; Apple says the display measures 6.86 inches when treated as a standard rectangle, and the actual viewable area is smaller because of rounded corners. Apple’s specifications provide those measurement qualifications.
A18 Pro processor
The phone uses Apple’s A18 Pro chip, specified with a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. Apple’s launch announcement also promoted the model as built for Apple Intelligence. Which Apple Intelligence features a person can use depends on supported language, device language settings, software, and region, so check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence availability information for the applicable conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Three rear cameras and Camera Control
The rear camera system comprises a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, and a 12MP 5x Telephoto camera. Apple lists up to 25x digital zoom and a 10x optical zoom range. Camera Control is another named feature of the model. Apple’s 2024 announcement highlighted 4K video recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision; that is a specific capture capability, not a claim about every recording mode.
Titanium body and physical size
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a titanium design. Apple lists its dimensions as 163 mm high, 77.6 mm wide, and 8.25 mm deep, with a weight of 227 g. Those figures help explain why the larger screen also means a relatively large, substantial handset; they are manufacturer specifications, not a handling assessment.

Water and dust resistance: what IP68 does and does not mean
Apple rates the phone IP68 under IEC 60529. The rating refers to controlled laboratory testing at a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. It is not a guarantee for every exposure: Apple says water resistance is not permanent and may diminish with wear. Apple’s specifications state the test conditions and limitation.

How to identify the model you have
Look for the exact model name in the phone’s settings and match it to the identifying specifications, rather than relying on appearance alone. Capacity, finish, and regional stock can differ, while the 6.9-inch display, A18 Pro chip, and three-camera combination are key specifications Apple associates with iPhone 16 Pro Max. For a purchase or accessory check, confirm that the listing or compatibility information names “iPhone 16 Pro Max” exactly.
