Best low-price signal: around $589
The approximately $589 Amazon figure is the lowest headline price found, but it is not enough to identify a winner. Comparison pages can show a different seller or condition than the product page you reach at checkout. Confirm that the phone is an iPhone 16 Plus 128GB, check whether it is new, used or refurbished, and read the seller’s return and warranty terms.

Best balance of price and flexibility: restored or resale unlocked
The $629.90 Walmart restored unlocked listing and Swappa listings around $638 are close in price while preserving the ability to choose a compatible carrier. Walmart also showed other restored sellers from $548, but the lowest seller is not automatically the safest: compare the seller rating, battery-health disclosure, return window and warranty before paying.

When the $729 prepaid model makes sense
The $729 Walmart phone includes Straight Talk prepaid service but is locked to Straight Talk and requires a Straight Talk plan for activation. It can fit a shopper who intends to stay with that carrier, yet its plan obligation makes the apparent purchase price less comparable with an unlocked phone. Calculate the handset, activation and required service together.
Why the $829.99 unlocked listing may still appeal
Best Buy’s listed $829.99 unlocked price is substantially above restored and resale offers. Its advantage is the possibility of a new or retailer-backed purchase, but the page said new availability may be unavailable and displayed open-box or refurbished alternatives. Verify the condition shown for the exact unit, not merely the product title.

How Apple Trade In changes the effective price
Apple says Trade In is available online and in Apple Stores, and an estimated credit can be applied directly to a new iPhone purchase when you use monthly payments. A September 9, 2026 report put the maximum iPhone 16 Plus trade-in value at $430, down from $485. That $430 is a dated ceiling, not a guaranteed offer: Apple’s estimate depends on the model and condition and can change.
To calculate your real cost, subtract the current confirmed trade-in credit from the handset price, then add sales tax and any financing cost. Do not subtract the maximum figure until Apple has evaluated your specific phone.
