The iPhone 17 launched in the U.S. at $799 with 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 15 Plus launched at $899 with 128GB. That makes the newer model $100 cheaper at launch and gives it twice the base storage—but these are prices from different release years, not current checkout prices. The 15 Plus remains the larger phone, with a 6.7-inch display compared with the iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch screen.

Apple lists the 15 Plus display, chip, camera setup, playback estimate, and connector on its iPhone comparison page. The iPhone 17’s published specifications are on Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications page. Apple’s playback figures are maximum manufacturer estimates, not guarantees of everyday battery life. The camera entries describe published configurations and capabilities; they do not establish which phone takes better-looking photos in a direct test.
How the display and size differ
The iPhone 15 Plus is the choice for a larger screen: its display measures 6.7 inches, 0.4 inches more diagonally than the iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch display. That makes the older Plus model the more relevant option if screen area is the priority. The iPhone 17’s listed ProMotion refresh rate of up to 120Hz and Always-On display are the more notable display features on the newer phone.
The cited Apple comparison excerpt does not list refresh-rate or Always-On details for the 15 Plus, so this comparison does not treat those features as a verified absence on that model.

Chip and camera differences
Apple specifies an A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 15 Plus and an A19 in the iPhone 17. The generation names establish that the iPhone 17 uses a newer chip, but they do not by themselves quantify real-world speed or establish a particular performance gain.
Apple describes the 15 Plus as having a 48MP Main camera and an Ultra Wide camera. The iPhone 17’s published camera details include a 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide, 2x optical-quality telephoto framing, and 48MP macro photography. Those are capability differences on paper, not an independent comparison of image quality.

Battery playback and USB-C
Apple rates the iPhone 17 for up to 30 hours of video playback and the iPhone 15 Plus for up to 26 hours. These are manufacturer-stated maximums; actual battery life depends on how a phone is used and other conditions.
Both models use USB-C, but neither specification implies high-speed data transfer just because the connector is USB-C. Apple lists USB 2 for the 15 Plus and USB 2 up to 480 Mb/s for the iPhone 17.

Launch price difference and what it means now
Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $899 for the iPhone 15 Plus in 2023, with 128GB as its base capacity. Its 2023 launch announcement also lists 256GB and 512GB configurations. Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $799 for the iPhone 17 in 2025, with 256GB as its base capacity; the 2025 launch announcement lists 512GB as the other capacity.
Subtracting those launch starting prices, the iPhone 17 began $100 lower while including twice the entry-level storage. This is not a storage-matched comparison: the two prices apply to different base capacities and release years. Neither figure establishes what either model costs today. A current comparison should use the same country and date and account for storage, condition, seller, and whether the phone is carrier-locked or unlocked; the current unlocked checkout price and present used, refurbished, or remaining-new-stock value of the 15 Plus are not established here.

Which one should you choose?
Choose the iPhone 15 Plus if screen size comes first
Its clear advantage in the listed specifications is the 6.7-inch display. If you prefer a larger screen, compare the actual price and condition of any available 15 Plus against the iPhone 17 before buying, especially because the older model may be offered as used, refurbished, or remaining new stock.

The iPhone 17 has the newer listed chip generation, ProMotion up to 120Hz and Always-On display, more detailed camera capabilities, a higher Apple-rated maximum video playback time, and 256GB of base storage at launch. Its lower launch starting price is meaningful as a launch-history comparison, but does not tell you the current amount you will pay.

Make the price comparison on equal terms
- Compare the same storage capacity where possible; the launch base models differ, 128GB versus 256GB.
- Match condition and seller type, such as new against new or refurbished against refurbished.
- Check carrier status and country, and use prices available on the same date.
