The iPhone 14 Plus has the larger screen; the iPhone 17 is more compact and has newer listed camera, chip, storage, and connector specifications. If you already own a working 14 Plus and value its screen size, keeping it may make sense. If you are buying a phone now, the iPhone 17 is the newer option, but the price gap cannot be calculated reliably from the available listings because no like-for-like current 14 Plus price is established.

Specifications are drawn from Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus technical specifications, AT&T’s model comparison, and Apple’s iPhone comparison page. AT&T’s figures and offers describe that carrier’s listing, not every market or retailer.
Which phone has the bigger screen?
The iPhone 14 Plus has the larger display: Apple specifies a 6.7-inch OLED screen, compared with the iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch OLED screen. The standard-rectangle measurements are 6.68 inches and 6.27 inches respectively. The 14 Plus also lists a 2778 × 1284 resolution and 458 pixels per inch.
Choose the 14 Plus if maximizing screen area is your priority. The smaller iPhone 17 is the more compact choice if you would rather have a phone that takes up less space. Screen diagonal alone does not describe the full handling experience, but it establishes the size trade-off between these models.

How do the chips and cameras differ?
Chip specifications
The 14 Plus uses Apple’s A15 Bionic, listed with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU. AT&T lists the iPhone 17 with an A19, a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. These are specifications from different generations; the figures here do not establish a particular real-world speed advantage or benchmark result.
Rear cameras
The 14 Plus has a 12MP main camera with sensor-shift OIS and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. AT&T lists a 48MP Fusion main camera and 48MP Fusion ultra-wide on the iPhone 17, with 2x optical-quality telephoto framing from the main camera.

On paper, the iPhone 17 offers higher-resolution listed rear cameras and an additional framing option. Megapixel counts and feature descriptions alone do not prove which phone takes better-looking photos in every scene; no hands-on image-quality testing is established here.

The 14 Plus was offered in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations. AT&T’s iPhone 17 comparison lists 256GB and 512GB, making 256GB the smallest capacity in that listing—twice the 14 Plus’s base capacity.

If you are comparing specific phones, match storage as well as condition and seller terms. The entry configurations are not equivalent: a 128GB 14 Plus should not be treated as a like-for-like storage match for a 256GB iPhone 17.
What changes when you move from Lightning to USB-C?
The 14 Plus has a Lightning connector; the iPhone 17 uses USB-C. Before switching, check which cables, adapters, and other wired accessories you already use and whether they will connect to the new phone. The connector difference does not, by itself, establish charging time or data-transfer performance.

AT&T lists MagSafe charging of up to 15W for the 14 Plus and up to 25W for the iPhone 17. These are maximum figures on its comparison page, not a promise of a particular charging time. Actual results depend on the charger and conditions.

AT&T’s comparison page, accessed October 7, 2026, says the iPhone 14 Plus is no longer available from that carrier and lists the iPhone 17 at a starting retail price of $929.99. It also shows a monthly offer for eligible trade-ins, which is conditional and is not the same as an outright cash price. This is one US carrier’s listing, not a universal Apple price or a market-wide price.

A numerical price difference cannot be stated fairly without a current 14 Plus price on a comparable basis. Used and refurbished prices depend on factors such as storage, condition, seller, and carrier-lock status; a new iPhone 17 price should not be compared directly with an unspecified used 14 Plus offer. Check the seller’s current price and terms for the exact models you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you upgrade from iPhone 14 Plus to iPhone 17?
Keeping the 14 Plus may suit you if
- You are satisfied with its larger 6.7-inch-class screen.
- Your phone is working well and its storage, camera features, and connector still meet your needs.
- You would rather avoid changing Lightning cables and accessories without a compelling reason.
Consider the iPhone 17 if
- You want the smaller 6.3-inch-class display size.
- You value its newer A19 platform and the listed dual 48MP rear-camera system.
- You want a 256GB starting configuration in AT&T’s comparison, rather than the 14 Plus’s 128GB base option.
- You are ready to move from Lightning to USB-C.
Those are specification-based reasons to choose one model over the other, not a guarantee that an upgrade will feel worthwhile. The decision also depends on your current phone’s condition, the price you can actually get, your storage use, and the accessories you need.
Water-resistance ratings are not a guarantee against damage
The 14 Plus has an IP68 rating with a stated maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529; Apple’s comparison lists IP68 for the iPhone 17. These are laboratory ratings, not promises that either phone is waterproof or protected from damage in every exposure. Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus specifications include the 14 Plus rating and its conditions.
