You can use Wi-Fi while Airplane Mode is on: enable Airplane Mode, then turn Wi-Fi back on. If your iPad joins an airplane, airport, hotel, or other public network but still cannot get online, it may need a separate sign-in through the network’s welcome page. Follow the airline’s rules; Apple says Wi-Fi use in Airplane Mode depends on airline permission. Apple’s iPad travel guidance explains the wireless settings involved.

First, tell whether the problem is joining Wi-Fi or getting online

These are different stages. If the network name is missing or the iPad refuses to join, troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connection. If the iPad shows a blue checkmark beside the network and a Wi-Fi icon, it has joined that network; a public network may still require portal authorization before internet access is granted. Apple describes these indicators in its Wi-Fi connection guide and explains portal sign-in in its captive Wi-Fi guide.

  • Network absent: check that Wi-Fi is on and confirm the network name with the airline or venue.
  • Join fails: try the basic device checks below, then ask the network provider whether access or settings have changed.
  • Joined but no internet: look for a welcome or login page and complete any requested sign-in or terms acceptance.
  • Portal appeared and was dismissed: reopen the network details and look for an option to return to the welcome page.

Turn Wi-Fi back on without turning off Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode initially disables Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connections. You can enable Wi-Fi again while leaving Airplane Mode on, subject to the airline’s rules. Apple puts it plainly in Choose iPad settings for travel: “When you turn on Airplane Mode initially, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, and cellular networks turn off.”

  1. Open Control Center and turn on Airplane Mode.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi control to turn Wi-Fi on again. Alternatively, open Settings > Wi-Fi and enable Wi-Fi there.
  3. Keep Airplane Mode enabled if required by the airline; do not treat turning it off as the only fix.

Join the network and complete its sign-in

Select the exact network

Open Settings > Wi-Fi, make sure Wi-Fi is enabled, and tap the network name provided by the airline or venue. A blue checkmark beside the name indicates the iPad has joined it. If the network is hidden, Apple’s iPad internet guide says to choose Other and enter the network name, security type, and password.

Wait for the captive-portal page

Airplanes and public venues may use a captive network that requires a welcome page before internet access. After choosing the network, wait for the page and follow its prompts: enter the requested username, password, or email address, or accept the terms. Fees and access conditions are controlled by the network provider.

If the welcome page does not appear, tap the More Info button beside the network name and choose Join Network if that option is available. If the page was dismissed, Apple says the user may be able to return to it, use the network without internet, or choose another network.

Check Auto-Join and Auto-Login separately

Auto-Join determines whether the iPad connects to a known network automatically. Auto-Login affects whether the network sign-in process is handled automatically. In the network’s More Info settings, check Auto-Join if you want automatic connection. If you need the welcome page to appear again on a previously used captive network, turn off Auto-Login. The two controls serve different purposes, as Apple notes in its captive-network instructions.

Isolate the iPad from the network

Test another device on the same Wi-Fi, and if practical, test the iPad on a different Wi-Fi network. This simple comparison helps locate the failure:

Try basic iPad and network checks

Check Wi-Fi and restart if its control is unavailable

Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled in Settings > Wi-Fi. For this airplane use case, Airplane Mode may remain on as long as you re-enable Wi-Fi and the airline permits its use. If the Wi-Fi control is greyed out, Apple recommends restarting the iPad.

Check the access point or router when you control it

If this is your own or an administered network rather than an airline-managed one, check that the router is powered on and in range, and that the network is operating. Apple also recommends updating router firmware, trying another supported frequency band if available, and restarting the router and modem. On a school or business network, consult IT before changing managed settings.

Test VPN or security software as a possible cause

Apple recommends temporarily uninstalling VPN or security software as a diagnostic step, then restarting and testing the connection. Do this only if appropriate for your device and organization’s rules. If the connection works afterward, contact the software provider or VPN administrator for a supported configuration rather than leaving required protection removed.

Reset network settings only after other steps fail

Resetting network settings is a later step, not a first attempt. It removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords as well as mobile, VPN, and APN settings. On a managed school or business iPad, consult IT before proceeding.

If other solutions have failed, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide describes this reset and its effects.

When venue Wi-Fi still is not available

A Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad with an active compatible service may be able to use cellular data instead, depending on its model, settings, service, and location. Apple also describes Connectivity Assist, which can use cellular data when Wi-Fi is weak, busy, or has no internet access, under supported conditions. Cellular data is an alternative connection path; it does not fix the venue’s Wi-Fi or complete its captive-portal login. See Apple’s guide to connecting iPad to the internet.
